hi this is a (wip) rentry about maciej aleksy dawidowski that includes basically everything, some stuff is from my own interpretation (after i read every interview i could find with people who knew him personally aswell as many books) have fun reading

13/09/26 i visited warsaw again :) cleaned up mama in laws grave and left her and my sister in law grave candles! nobody leaves them anything anymore sadly (but they have me, of course)

history

maciej aleksy "alek" dawidowski was a polish resistance fighter during world war 2, a second lieutenant in the home army, a scoutmaster in the grey ranks, and a commander of the sabotage and diversion platoon! he had been a boy scout since his teenage years.

he was born on the third of november, 1920 in drohobych. even though drohobych is ukrainian now, he is 100% polish as the borders have changed.. and it used to be poland back then.. his mothers name was janina dawidowska, his fathers name was aleksy dawidowski (who he got his second name from) and his sisters name was maryla (maria) strzembosz-dawidowska.

janina was arrested in 1942 and sent to the ravensbruck concentration camp, she survived the war and died on the 1st of september 1970. his father was shot to death in 1939, and his sister survived the war and lived till 2007! alek went to the gimnazjum named after stefan batory in warsaw along with his best friends, jan "rudy" bytnar and tadeusz "zoska" zawadzki.

on the 26th of march, 1943, during the rescue mission to save rudy aka "operation arsenal" alek commanded the "grenades" section in the "attack" group. unfortunately, after the rebound of the prisoners, alek got gravely injured during a gun fight.

he was transported by a stopped german car, where he threw his last grenade through the ajar door in the direction of the germans, which made it possible for everyone to return safely. sadly, alek passed away 4 days later, on the 30th of march, due to the gun shot wound.

he was posthumously awarded with the cross of the order of virtuti militari 5th class, and the commanders cross with the star of the order of polonia restituta. he was the first scout of the grey ranks to be given the highest polish military decoration

alek had blond hair and bright blue eyes, he was described as exceptionally tall* for his time, athletic and lean. he did sports such as skiing (which was his favorite) basketball track and swimming. he never put much effort into his appearance, very effortessly handsome if you ask me..

he was said to be very charming, cheerful and optimistic about everything, even in hard times. my teacher called him childish once but i think his personality was very endearing.. alek's demeanor was characterized by a constant smile, rapid and enthusiastic speech, and expressive gestures, reflecting his energetic personality.

alek was multilingual, theres not much information about how he did in school, but we do know he could speak polish, german, and french. he was on the math-physics profile in highschool.

even though his name was maciej, everyone, including himself, referred to him as "aleksy" or most commonly, "alek", which was also his codename.

he had many nicknames, such as alek, axy, aluś, kopernicki, glizda, koziorożec and dryblas.

he never smoked, drank, nor even cursed.

historians and his friends often highlighted alek's deep moral reflections. he frequently wrote about the "conscience" and the ethics of violence, even against enemies.

^ additionally, i will add that he was very self aware of his "arrogance" and his "insensitivity to the war". he wrote about how disgusting he is and about the "many negative aspects" of him. how mature and intelligent!

• he also said he is way too lazy and i still don't know what he was talking about

he was very much a "mama's boy". he always helped his mother as much as he could, and when she was arrested he blamed himself for it and considered turning himself in to the gestapo just so they would set her free.

alek had a collection of hats. his favorites were cowboy hats, while there are no photos of him wearing one, it is said in "rudy, alek, zoska" that when barbara first saw him, he was wearing a white cowboy hat!

personal opinions

if anyone wants to watch films about alek and his friends, please watch akcja pod arsenalem and not kamienie na szaniec. do not waste your time guys! i hate it, and i think its very inaccurate. first of all, it focuses solely on zoska and rudy, and theres barely anything about alek. it also focuses way too much on rudys and his girlfriends relationship for some ungodly reason, and the actors look nothing like the real zoska, rudy and alek.

about the akcja pod arsenalem 1978 film, i think its amazing, and its definitely one of my favorites of all time. but again, the actors are.. something. except for zoskas actor, because he looks really similar to him! but even someone that knew alek personally said the actor looks really off (rozlazły i bez ikry lol)

i recommend reading the books not just watching films cause you wont understand shit icl
