This is a rentry page to organize and keep track of the translation related posts (mostly I've made) for Blue Archive in one place.
The entries on this page were primarily made to check and compare the official (English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese and Thai) translations with the original Korean text, for people who are interested in BA's translations for any reason.

These are mostly comparisons between the official translations and what the translations are translating from. Some entries may contain more commentary from me through the "/bag/ post(s)" links but I'll try quote to as much relevant information as I can from my original posts. (I might edit the quotes to include more information or trim text for the sake of conciseness).

Special Summer Mission! RABBIT SQUAD and the Mystery of the Missing Shrimp

All of the translations (I didn't check Thai because it hurts to look at) are similar to the English translation (including the Japanese translation).
The original title "사라진 새우를 향한 토끼의 추적" is ... supposed to be [a] reference to The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (미지의 카다스를 향한 몽환의 추적) so a more faithful translation in general would be something like "A Rabbit's Quest of the Missing Shrimp".

Guppa

The original script used "데덴찌" or "dedenchi". It is believed to be a loanword of "手天地" or "tetenchi" and originated from the Japanese colonial period.
It's a game where children divide people into teams based on whoever has their palms or the back of their hands facing up (or down) by the end of a song or chant that is varied from region to region.
The Taiwan chinks used "黑白黑白我勝利" or "Black and white, black and white, I win", which is a similar enough to dedenchi that I'll say that they are actually about the same. (There are different variations of the song depending on the region and "black" refers to the back of the hand and "white" refers to the palm).
The Thai used "โอน้อยออก". Same deal with the hands but their version can single a person out by eliminating the group with the fewer members and choosing to repeat until I think(?) the two remaining people play rock paper scissors.
What they have in common is that they're old children games with hand flipping to decide groups and I don't think there's a close Western equivalent of the games.

Thundergun

Tyrant Emperor

["뇌제"] is the same title ... used for Ivan IV Vasilyevich or "Ivan the Terrible" (Ивáн Гpóзный)

A common explanation I see people repeat is that it was a chink mistranslation that everyone just ended up liking and continuing to use.
Some other people say that it is partially derived from a literal translation of Гpoзный as "thunderous", since the word itself was most likely based off of гpoзá ("thunder"), гpoзить ("threaten") and a Proto-Slavic word for "terrible".

Remedial Knights

I'm going to only include some comments about how each language usually refers to the "Knights Hospitaller" because a direct translation of each name would just be Relief / Remedial Knights (with the Thai explicitly including "Club" as part of the name) and there isn't too much to say on this topic.

구호기사단 ... [is the e]xact same name they use for "Knights Hospitaller".
... Thai - คณะอัศวินบริบาล (or just อัศวินบริบาล) would be what they call the Knights Hospitaller.
... [Chinese] - "救護騎士團" (and "救护骑士团" for the mainland Chinese) are actually uncommon (yet valid) names for "Knights Hospitaller" but [the mainland Chinese commonly use "医院骑士团" for "Knights Hospitaller" while the Taiwanese usually go with "醫院騎士團"]
... Japanese - ホスピタル騎士団 (or 聖ヨハネ騎士団) would be what they call the Knights Hospitaller.

Monkey of Senses

The "Monkey" part of her title specifically alludes to either 獼猴王 ("Macaque King", one of the Seven Great Sages) or 美猴王 ("Monkey King", one of Sun Wukong's titles) from Journey to the West. (Korean doesn't really make a distinction between those two titles even though the language does have a word specifically for "macaque", so it's a bit ambiguous what is her motif exactly besides ... being a "Monkey's Paw" . People including myself believe that she's based off of Wukong.
Meanwhile, the "Five Desires" from the title refers to the 5 main desires of humans according to Buddhism: money, fame, food, sleep, lust.
The five desires stem from the 5 (or 6 depending on who you ask) senses or "dusts" of sight, sound, smell, taste, touch (and thought as the optional sixth "dust") "polluting" or "staining" a person's body and mind

Thanks to the usual fuckery of chink wordplay, the "Sun" part of "Sun Wukong" (孫悟空) is based off of the chink word for "monkey" (猢猻) and "猢猻" can also mean "macaque".
So, even if the original Korean text didn't specifically mention "macaque" the two characters that Kai is likely derived from are still either directly or indirectly related to "macaques" by technicality and "五塵の獼猴" is an okay translation.

The exact term used in the spoiler in my full post is 원숭이 손 .
GrimGreen more or less explained the "5 desires" part of Kai's title along with her "Monkey's Paw" motif similarly on the 3.5 anniversary livestream dev talk.

Shunling

"小" can be used as a Chinese prefix that people can attach before names to indicate closeness with the owner of the name and form sort of a nickname. It's generally used by older people towards younger people.
You can see this also being used as part of a nickname Utaha calls the Thundergun by in (one of) the Chinese translations.

Bun Bun

깡총이 is based off of the mimetic (or onomatopoeic) "깡총깡총". (Though, I think "깡충깡충" is more commonly used now?)

Seia

Using this as an opportunity to elaborate on my post now that I have time. Seia's new JP dialogue are more or less closer to the Korean text than her dialogue on the JP server and translating the Korean text when someone else has already went through the new JP dialogue would feel redundant.

From time to time, anons might ask the general if the English translation is accurate or what was the exact wording used in Korean. Sometimes, I might just butt in without any prompt or invitation. Quotes are included for context and my replies will be in bold. Input or replies that I haven't made in the general will be below the quotes in regular text.

"It's mid."

That's not even a decent translation for the line.
"It's mid" can actually work since "별로" is used informally in this case. If you're autistically deadset on not having Hare say "mid" at all then the line can also be translated as "It sucks" instead.

Very late grammar correction for myself here: the line can be translated as "It sucked" (with a past tense and not present tense). Very dumb mistake from past me.

Rowdy and Cheery

The translations of the names in the other languages are fine because of how straightforward they are spelled and pronounced in Korean.
From what I can remember, only Arisu, Pina, Junko and arguably Eimi are iffy because of the nature of translations.

Mari is close enough to Marie so both could work.
"Mary" is usually spelt like 메리 or 매리.

At the time, I forgot to also mention "Kei" (formerly "Kay") or "케이".

Basic and Enhanced Skills

Yes, "basic" and "enhanced" are accurate before you ask.

"enhanced" just seems wrong. It's a skill that enhances you, but that's not the same as an enhanced skill.

I mean yeah "Enhancement" or "Strengthening" would be the most accurate but they are already pushing it in the icon real estate with "Enhanced" and "Enhanced+".
Gook doesn't have this spacing problem.

After the posts were made, I remembered that Maplestory officially translated "Enhancement Core" (강화 스킬) as "Boost Node" for its V Matrix system. So, you can argue that "Enhanced Skill" should be translated as "Boost Skill" instead if you don't mind slightly sacrificing accuracy for an arguably less awkward translation that can still fit reasonably well in skill icons as a compromise.

"Cybernetic Rapid Ordnance Carrier" and "Leisure Mechagator"

In Japanese, this was a blatant Metal Gear reference (again)

"메탈 웨폰 스피드 크로커다일" or "Metal Weapon Speed Crocodile".

What was its KR/JP name? AFAIK alligators can't tolerate saltwater, unlike crocodiles which can tolerate a little bit.

"레저용 메카 악어" or "Leisure Mecha Crocodilian". "악어" is used to refer to animals of the "Crocodilia" order (which contains crocodiles and alligators) but I'd argue that "Crocodile" would be a less awkward translation even if it was slightly "inaccurate".

Sublime

i'm going to assume it's an attempt at "translation" of 崇高, taken in literally without putting in thought of its context. it might be better for you zoomers to understand it as "kino" or "peak"

Maestro literally says "sublime" in korean and english (korean).

I think I should clarify that the in-game screenshot I've posted wasn't edited. The writer explicitly included "the sublime" to indicate how "숭고" should be read.

"The director's human, though."

I feel like the translator fucked up, but it's a mistake they'll consider too small to bother fixing. I feel like it was meant to be a more neutral term rather than human.

Fubuki specifically said 사람 which can mean "person" or "human" depending on the context. In this case, I also think it should be "person".

After looking back at the text, it needs to be mentioned that Fubuki's line should also be reworded a bit more to avoid the awkwardness in dialogue when later replacing "human" with "person". For context, the dialogue leading up to that point was

Chihiro: Simply put...
Chihiro: ...the alligator recognized its opponent as a superior predator.
Chihiro: That's why it switched behaviors.
Chihiro: ...You're sure it got scared of a person?
Sensei: "..."
Kirino: I-Is that even possible?!
Utaha: Demolition protocols aside, the Mechagator was meant to act like a real alligator.
Utaha: If a real alligator spotted a superior, it would run.

Who the fuck types out "milliliters"? These translators never cease to amaze me with their retardation. I even checked the Japanese text, and it just says "milk."

Also as a followup, here's this image to confuse things even more. From the Chesed intro.
Outside of this text, Decagrammaton making contact with Divi:Sion specifically (NOT Division) is never brought up ever again as far as I'm aware.

This statement from Black Suit is weird as fuck when you consider that he seems to be talking about "Division" in that dialogue.
Which is expanded upon later in the Deca side stories as being related to Chesed and the munitions / robo factory, NOT Divi:Sion which gets covered >in Volume 2 and Volume F and isn't shown having any relationship to Chesed at all.

Few possibilities:

1. the writers goofed / just forgot about it / accidentally retconned it, this chesed intro was written before the game even came out in 2021
2. the EN localizers goofed (although I think the same mistake shows up in JP as well)
3. Black Suit is actually telling the truth somehow

Black Suit says "디비전" or "Division" in the Chesed intro. "Divi:Sion" is mentioned multiple times in Volume 2 and twice(?) in Volume F.

Underground Dweller's Laugh

Is this a mistranslation? What does this line say in Korean/Japanese?

The translation is correct.

가령 다이어트부의 경우는, 식이나 운동 없이, 과학적 방법론으로 체형을 만들자는 건전한 동아리이고.

The line makes more sense if you take the previous lines and next lines in consideration.

Momoi: Are those names making you nervous? Relax. Not everybody's out to get you.
Momoi: I mean, you are already...familiar with the Athletics Training Club and the Engineering Department. But what are you expecting from the other clubs?
Momoi: Let me tell you, the Diet Club is reputable. They promote body shaping through scientific methods, without depending on diet or exercise.

"Please take care of my students."

Phrenapates' last words were "Please take care of my students", but based on Shiroko*Terror's first momotalk, she doesn't need caring at all. And don't even get started on Plana, who's basically taking care of me instead of the other way around.

Bad translation. He just said "生徒たち." "The students" would be more accurate.

What does the gook script say? JP isn't the source script used for EN.

"제 학생들을 부탁합니다" or "Please take care of my students."

"Any money amounts written in official documents must be written in Chinese to prevent forgery or other mishaps."

"갖은자" specifically refers to "大字" (daiji).

Shiroko Noises

• In-game citation(s): V1C2, EP5 "Everyone Has a Story Part 2", V1C3, EP34 "Apology"

Shiroko has a habit of using both "음" and "응".
"음" is an onomatopoeic interjection that can be translated as "hmmm" and is used to auditorily express or indicate thinking.
"응" is an affirmative interjection (that's probably also onomatopoeic) in the same vein as "yeah", "mhmm", "うん", etc.

(Note: Mint mania.)

"성애자" can be translated into "-phile" or "lover" (as in a person who likes something e.g. food lover, audiophile, book lover, etc).
So, "민트성애자" can be translated into "mint lover" or "mintphile". "Mint maniac" is more dependent on your interpretation on how strong of a word "maniac" is, so I would opt to go with "mint lover" or "mintphile" as safer translations.
"민트 조증" would be more like "mint mania".

Cherino's List of Titles in "Radiant Moon, Raucous Dream"

Is this a translation error or done for comedic effect?

Cherino was referred to as "Chief of Sanitation" (청소부장) twice (four times).
However, "Great Leader" (서기장) was translated as "Main Secretary" in those lines and is inconsistent with how they usually translate that word.
Also, they would need to reword the line where Marina lists Cherino's titles since the translation had her referring to Cherino as "Great Leader" at the beginning of the sentence and then start listing Cherino's titles after saying "also".

"Ugh... All the soldiers are scattering... He's all alone..."

Did the Korean text use male indications when they were doing the play? English text assumes kaguya was playing a guy?

I tunnel visioned too hard and I forgot that they did technically use male indications in the play.
Peking Opera Club Member B referred to Kaguya with a term that's commonly translated as "King" (as in a king of a country) (군왕) and Peking Opera Club Member C referred to Kaguya with a title that can be translated to "Great King" (대왕).
That's completely my bad.

Cookies / "You don't honestly think taiyaki and plum blossom mooncakes are the same thing..."

So, are they translated as "cookies" in the event, or is it just for the pyro giveaway?

I ask because I was doing Ichika's momotalks of all things, and mooncake was brought up. I haven't read the event on global yet (already read it on JP)

They used "과자" which can be translated as "cookie" but it can also be translated as "pastry" or "confection".

It used "붕어 까만코" and "매화빵".
"붕어 까만코" is a parody of Carp Samanco while the first thing that comes to mind for "매화빵" is Gwangyang Plum Blossom Bread which is picrel.
"Mooncake" is usually "문케이크" or "월병".

Reijo mentioned "인절미 과자" (translated as "injeolmi crackers" in this case) in her relationship story. 인절미 과자 are also known and translated as "injeolmi snacks".
In hindsight, I should've also mentioned that "과자" is a Sino-Korean word based off of "菓子" (and is usually used to refer to food that are "sweets" or "snacks" in general while more specific translations of the word depend on the context) in my initial explanation.

(On a slightly related note, the "Sweets" in the "After-School Sweets Club" (방과후 디저트부) club name was translated from "디저트", which can be directly translated as "dessert".)

Juri (Part-time Job)

"아르바이트" is a loanword of the German word "arbeit" and is believed to have been introduced into Korea by the Japanese during the Japanese colonial period (through the Japanese loanword for "arbeit" (アルバイト)).
It shares the same meaning and connotation with アルバイト where they are commonly used to refer to "part-time job" or "part-time work" (if "파트타임 일자리" isn't used).
It is usually shortened to "알바" and "알바생" can be translated as "part-timer".

Hiniature

On a side note, this is a good example of why people are dissuaded from applying romanization to Korean (past learning how to pronounce "자모 (jamo)" as a questionable exception), as Korean pronunciation and transliteration from Korean tend to be both "ambiguous" and "flexible". How some student names are translated in English (and other languages), "Abi-Eshuh" and "Perez Uzza" are other good examples.

I don't know if this needs to clarified or not but "Noah" is technically a valid translation and "Yuka" is arguably also a valid translation too (even though the lack of a diacritic is questionable), but they are "incorrect" translations in this instance even if they are "technically' correct because how they are spelt isn't consistent with the previous official translations for their names.

No not always. For example, the sometimes pointed to "Sensei has muscles" observation from Meru in the Red Winter Hot Springs event is JP-only (and the "muscles" line isn't "muscular" so much as "supple musculature"). The English for the line is from the Korean original. It's a case in fact where the Japanese localization completely made something up, as a matter of fact.

That's rare, but regardless it's good to check the source obviously.

I want clarify something since there were some misconceptions about where "San" came from and I don't think I saw anyone properly address it.
"씨" is a Korean honorific that can also be translated as the "-san" honorific and vice versa, depending on the context and people (read: the relationship between the speaker and the receiver of the honorific) involved.

Yes. This is one of the many cases where different "preferences" in translations can occur in general, especially when people have to consider translations to, from and between context-sensitive languages with different cultures. I can also see how and why the translators and localizers can get confused from time to time because the original Korean script uses both Korean and Japanese honorifics.

The translators made a "Dude Weed" joke intentionally. No where in the official version do they even mention "smoking"

Sensei's reply to her implies that it's meant to be more subtle. That's the only mistake I can see from them.
