A BA Translation Rentry - Part 2

What Is This?

This is a rentry page to organize and keep track of the translation related posts (mostly I've made) for Blue Archive in one place.
The entries on this page were primarily made to check and compare the official (English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese and Thai) translations with the original Korean text, for people who are interested in BA's translations for any reason.

A continuation of A BA Translation Rentry.

  • The official Simplified Chinese translation is less accessible compared to the other translations, so it will be excluded most of the time.
  • Not all of the entries (or their content) are done with my own effort. I will include posts made from other people if they are relevant for this rentry despite the initial intent of the rentry being to host my posts.
  • The official translations may have changed for relevant entries since the last time they have been updated, which will render those entries out of date.
  • b4k really does not like it when rentry preloads multiple full size images from it at once. So, a lot of images that help provide context for the quoted posts are not included and you'll have to navigate to the archive yourself to see the images. (The relevant posts are usually linked near the top of each entry for convenience).
  • My unofficial (traditional-)Chinese-to-English transliterations will be partially based off of Pinyin.
  • My unofficial Thai-to-English transliterations will be based off of the Royal Thai General System of Transcription.

These are mostly comparisons between the official translations and what the translations are translating from. Some entries may contain more commentary from me through the "/bag/ post(s)" links but I'll try quote to as much relevant information as I can from my original posts. (I might edit the quotes to include more information or trim text for the sake of conciseness).

English Translation Checks

From time to time, anons might ask the general if the English translation is accurate or what was the exact wording used in Korean. Sometimes, I might just butt in without any prompt or invitation. Quotes are included for context and my replies will be in bold. Input or replies that I haven't made in the general will be below the quotes in regular text.

inb4 the fish analogy gets translated as something different

the JP version is a fanfic-tier localization so it wouldn't surprise me if the original text was completely different

I'll also include the lines before and after the line in question to make it easier for people to check for themselves later. (V6C2 episode 2 "Trumpet Call")

I forgot to clarify this in my actual post in the thread but the fish analogy does not exist in the original Korean script.

The current English translation of the cited volume 6 episode (Trumpet Call) (나팔 소리) is unofficial and tentative. It is subject to change when the official English translation for it is released.
After the February 24th maintenance: updated from V6XC2, EP2 "Trumpet Call" to V6XC2, EP2 "The Trumpet's Blow"

Localizers really do try to make things uglier

"Auuauhauuuuuuuuaaauuuh" would be closer to "아으어아으으으으어어어" but I suppose that "Auuauhguhaughhh" is easier to read?

Yeah, but they also keep changing the translations/wording.

There's no English "bye" in the Korean script but I'll take this opportunity to point out "Thiefster" is actually and consistently "괴도 쨩" or "Kaito-chan" or "Phantom Thief-chan", while Ritsu calls Akira "怪盗さん" (Kaito-san / Phantom Thief-san) in Episode 10 and "ドロボーさん" (Dorobou-san / Thief-san) in Episode 9 "I Don't Like this Ending".

You can also see that Akira calls Ritsu "Ritsu-chan" (리츠 쨩) when she says "Miss Ritsu" in the English translation while Akira calls her "お嬢さん" (Ojou-san / young lady) in the Japanese translation.

Yes, "house" is incorrect and is supposed to be "host" (호스트).

I've always wondered about this. In Japanese I didn't get this impression but it does seem blunt in English.
I wonder what the Korean is like, what with JP having precedence for adding things that weren't there before to soften things

There's a lot of text in this entry even after cherry picking 5 sections at most, so let's focus on the first and last selections since I believe they have the more "controversial" dialogue options.

"Looking forward to working with you." is a valid translation for "(모쪼록) 잘 부탁드립니다." in this context. Most people I see equate "잘 부탁드립니다" to "よろしくおねがいします" and vice versa.

"뭐야" is an interjection that people can use as a filler word. In this case, it can be translated as "what (is it)?".
Note that Mika does (jokingly) suggest the possibility of Sensei having an annoyed (귀찮(은)) reaction (반응) and Sensei acting annoyed (성가신) based on the "Mika. What." response before brushing it off.

"Timber"

I remember the line being something like "Ritsu, give me that tree" in the original script
But they changed it to "timber"
Which comes off slightly more jokey but kinda misses the mark.

Miyo just said "tree" (나무).

Sensei wouldn't call any student typical, this is a trannylation

It's fine in this context (of her momotalk and L2D), but adding in a "like" as in

"You're not like a typical student, Rabu."

might be a bit better.
