Your mother calls out to you, "What's the hold-up? Is everything okay?"
You reply, "It's great, Mom," although that remains to be seen.
"If Sara doesn't get here soon, I'm giving her mom a call."
Panic mode.
Immediately, you started pulling explanations out of every side of your brain. If your mom calls Sara's mom, the whole game is up.
Abort. Abort, you think, and you open your mouth to deliver the best of your bad excuses (Oh, Mom, it looks like she suddenly came down with horrendous food poisoning and she can no longer go! Oh well.), when a car creeps up to the curb outside your house.
