"She's here, Mom. Don't get up. I'll lock the door."
"I'll come say hi."
"No. No, no. We're already late, remember? Don't get up."
"Okay, honey. Love you. Be safe out there."
"I'll call before we leave to come back. Bye!"
You fling open the door, shut and lock it behind you, and run to the car. As you close in, you see his face. It's Jay.
You open the car door, jump inside, and hold your breath until he turns onto another street.
"We made it," he says.
You smile. Then you frown.
"I didn't know if you were really coming. "
Jay looks shocked. "What? Why? I know I was late but–get this– I had to work to earn actual cash. I just left 15 minutes ago. Some people warned me that they only take cash."
You blush. "You went through all of that for me?"
Jay shrugged. "Of course. I'm not really an escape room kind of guy. I'm more of a–"
