What is psychosis?

Psychosis is defined as "a severe mental condition in which thought and emotions are so affected that contact is lost with external reality." Psychosis is characterized by hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not real), delusions (thinking or believing things that are not real), and disorganized thinking.

What is the difference between psychosis and schizophrenia?

The difference between psychosis and schizophrenia is that psychosis is a symptom. Schizophrenia is one of the disorders that psychosis is a symptom of. Other disorders that can have psychosis as a symptom include bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and in some cases, severe depression. But psychosis is not a diagnosis on its own, you will instead be diagnosed with one of the other things and simply have psychosis as a symptom.

What is are the different types of delusion?

Types of delusions include persecutory (beliving someone or something is out to get you), erotomanic (believing someone is in love with you when they are not), grandiose (believing you are extremely wealthy or powerful), jealous (believing a partner is cheating on you), somatic (believing you are ill when you are not), mixed (a mixture of these), and unspecified (none of these). Delusions can also have themes. For a specific person, they can revolve around love, religion, guilt, or nihilism. You can read more about delusions here.

Are "DAs/IRLs" real?

No. These delusions would fall under delusions of grandeur, and do not need a seperate term. In addition, they are not nearly as common as the online community makes them out to be. If a "DA" is your only delusion, you do not have psychosis. You can read more about "DAs" here.

Is reality checking bad?

No. Reality checking is not bad. In fact, the opposite is true. Reality checking is a healthy and necessary part of recovery, and encouraging delusions is harmful and can be detrimental to your mental health. However, you should still ask before reality checking someone.
