Backstory

Clan

There was a brief time, back when the Golden Age of Sorcery was but beginning, that saw the Tachibana clan among the rulers of the country. In that era of violent upheavals, their splendour did not last long, and in a few generations, they were scattered, their glory never to return.

Or at least that’s how much was known by the non-sorcerers. In reality, the main branch of the Tachibana clan retreated from mundane politics to focus on the growing power of Sorcery. The world in which for over a millennium they thrived as one of the Major Clans.

Compared to some of their fellows, they aren’t an especially combat-focused clan, instead gaining a reputation as scholars and administrators. It’s unusual for the Jujutsu Headquarters to not have a member of the Tachibana among them.

Personal

From the latest generation of Tachibana, the one to inherit the clan technique was a boy named Daishi. He’s currently in his last year of study at Jujutsu Technical College, but has already been deemed worthy of the title of the First Grade Sorcerer. It’d be extremely impressive, were it not a time filled with monsters whose power goes even beyond that, and one more issue…

Daishi is a cripple. Paraplegic to be exact, and not in a simple way that could be healed by any method available to him, even with the backing of his clan. In fact, his clansmen would not wish for him to be cured, for they are the ones that crippled him.

A ritual performed on him as a yet unborn child etched in him a Binding Vow between him and Tokoyo no Kuni, greatly increasing his connection to it and enhancing his reserves of cursed energy, but also resulting in not enough spirit left to animate his whole body.

Daishi resents his uncle, the current head of the clan, for what has been done to him, but doesn’t view his decision as entirely unreasonable. As such, he’s dutiful in fulfilling his responsibilities, while trying to live his best life.

On missions, he mostly plays support, rarely going on the frontlines due to his condition. While in combat he’s not useless, thanks to his technique, if an enemy gets past his summons and into a melee range, he’s extremely vulnerable. He’d lose in a brawl to a vast majority of normal humans.

As a clansman, he tries to work towards strengthening their position and lends his support when he can. As the wielder of the inherited technique, there are functions he must attend, and expectations for him to meet. He set his eyes on one day becoming one of the “higher-ups” and does all he can to prepare for it.

At school, he tries to keep up high grades, while being a reliable friend and a supportive senpai. His doors are always open to anyone who needs him, whether it’s for advice, tutoring, or anything else. He’ll always welcome anyone who needs help with open hands and a treat, usually oranges from his hometown of Aridagawa.

All of that can leave him quite exhausted. The strain is building up with not many ways to release it. He picked up archery as a hobby to help deal with it, but how effective it will be remains to be seen.

Technique

Inherited Technique: Ferryman of Tokoyo

The Inherited Technique of the Tachibana clan is one that required careful cultivation over centuries. The focus on developing it, and the costs it took to initiate it, were one of the major reasons that they stepped out of politics so long ago.

It’s disputed whether the creator of the technique managed to reach the actual Tokoyo no Kuni, or just created an imitation of it, but it’s undeniable that the wielders of this technique do have access to a realm of spirits, one where people never grow old.

Through that connection, the wielder of the technique can summon spirits from there and place them in suitable vessels. Channelling a spirit is no easy feat. It requires both a suitable catalyst, cursed energy and knowledge about the one being summoned. The more suitable for the task the spirit and the vessel are, the more powerful and efficient the summon will be, partially because the vessel will be temporarily transformed to better serve its function and better match the spirit that inhabits it.

The base technique isn’t very useful, being more of a foundation for extension techniques than a stand-alone power. It allows the wielder of the technique to summon spirits of his ancestors who wielded this technique before him. Suitable vessels for such spirits are objects that are used to transfer knowledge, such as books and in modern times computers. The summoned spirits can then advise the summoner, in particular about what other spirits from Tokoyo can serve him in the chosen task, and help teach him about this technique.

The spirits, that the Tachibana use, did not come from nowhere. The wielder of this technique has access only to those, who in their lives took a vow that bound them to eternal servitude to the clan. All clan members are expected to take a Binding Vow, which redirects their souls after death from the normal afterlife and towards this realm. In the past, so did those that lived under the clan’s rule, but with the clan’s much smaller scale, those are not as common, so most of those are back from Heian period.

The Vow can only be taken by a willing, conscious participant, but coercive methods can be used. The resentment will, however, cause a spirit to be weaker afterwards.

After summoning, the process of calling off the spirit includes reaffirming the Vow. Failure to do so, usually because of the spirit being forcibly exorcised before the user could do so, will result in the spirit not being able to return to Tokoyo, its soul dispersed and doomed to oblivion. To avoid that risk, the Vow can also be reaffirmed as a part of the summoning process, but that variant takes a significantly lengthens the process, so it might not always be an option.

Extension Technique #1: Palace Guardians

//summon a spirit of a clan protector; suitable vessels are armours, walls, gates and other fortifications or in a pinch any sort of cover will do but the result will be diminished; the spirits will try to protect the user and his allies, if the vessel was immobile, so will be the spirit after, acting more as a barrier, in more mobile vessels the spirit can move and follow the target it should protect more actively

Extension Technique #2: Archers

//summon a spirit of an archer or soldier specialising in ranged combat; suitable vessels are bows, guns, and other projectile weapons, in a pinch even a stone one can throw will do but the result will be diminished; offensive ranged option, rather straightforward, causes the spirit to operate that weapon, its blows enhanced with cursed energy for power and range

Extension Technique #3: Procession

//Summon a spirit of a palanquin carrier, driver or similar; suitable vessels are cars, bikes, wheelchairs, and other transportation devices; allows the spirit to operate the vessel modified to the need, granting it some autonomy, speed and manoeuvrability, with a suitable enough of a vessel and sufficient cursed energy even allows for traversal on walls and flight

Extension Technique #4: Cavalry

//summon a spirit of a cavalryman or other soldier specialised in a fast-paced melee combat; suitable vessels are melee weapons; allows the spirit to control the object in a sort of telekinetic way, letting it move and strike with significant speed and power, as opposed to the archer option, the attacks aren’t in a relatively straight line/slight arc, but can move rather freely to continue their onslaught.

Extension Technique #5: Scouts

//summon a spirit of a scout; most suitable vessels are objects used to record information, brushes, pens, cameras etc; the spirit can move rather freely, is hard to notice and information on its surroundings transferred to the user

Extension Technique #6: Messengers

//summon a spirit of a messenger; vessels are objects that are used for messaging, most notably letters, but it can also be used to encode extra information on emails if a more modern spirit is used; the spirit can be used to deliver the message to a target recipient (if their location is known, it will be near instant, otherwise it will try to look for them), expand how much information can be transferred, and secure the message (non-sorcerers don’t have the means to detect them, and even for sorcerers breaking the seals will require effort), it allows for the target to send a response through the messenger if required, summoning multiple messengers allows to create something akin to a telepathic network.

Stack Technique #1: Palace Guardians - Maximum Output

//Summons multiple guardians at the same time, it’s faster than summoning them one by one, but less energy efficient, they synergise raising stronger defences

Stack Technique #2: Archers - Maximum Output

//summons multiple archers at the same time, that drown out the targets in a rain of fire, similar situation to above

Stack Technique #3: Procession - Maximum Output

//summons multiple transportation spirits, allowing for transporting large groups of people at the same time, cargo, or even structures as it can be used on bigger objects (imagine using it on a house and it gets turned into one huge palanquin with tens or hundreds of spirits carrying it)

Reversal Technique: Tsukumogami awakening

//instead of putting a spirit in an object, it draws a spirt out of one; causes an object to rapidly age (if it’s new) and fill with cursed energy required to awaken its tsukumogami; can be used as a bootleg shikigami, but usually not very efficient at it, mostly can be used to learn from it about the memory of the place or forcibly destroying an object by causing it to age unduly; energy and time required varies wildly depending on the object; tsukumogami is not bound to servitude, so it must be forced somehow to obey after, but for most objects, tsukumogami awakened in this manner are usually rather weak and dull; use on cursed tools strongly discouraged

Maximum Technique: Sorcerers

//this is summoning of the sorcerers bound to Tokoyo, other than the wielders of this technique, they can emulate any technique they could have used in life, but usually in a weakened form, and unlike Rika, Daishi doesn’t have near infinite cursed energy and he pays the price of it; very energy draining, and unlike for other summons the Vow cannot be reaffirmed, means that each sorcerer bound to Tachibana can only be used this way only once, considering most of them are clan members, and there generally aren’t that many of them available, this is used only as a last resort; this is a highly guarded secret, part of inheriting the technique/learning the maximum (can be taught by spirits summoned with the base Ferryman of Tokoyo) is taking another Binding Vow to never reveal it to anyone other than the future inheritor, even other clansmen.
