Type: Catalog Highway Nexus
# of sub-structures: 5120

The heart of the Nenera system and the main reason behind it's success as an economic nexus lies in the array of structures built around the Kideph Ral black hole. This array consists of a number of automated and semi-automated control & communications stations (CC Stations) as well as a few thousand Gate-Dredge stations (G-D Stations).

Operation

The Kideph Highway Junction at its core works by taking advantage of the orbital mechanics of the Kideph Ral black hole. As a spinning singularity, Kideph Ral has an ergosphere, a section of space where the gravity of the black hole drags spacetime around itself faster than the speed of light (from the point of reference of an observer far away from the ergosphere). In this area of space for an object to stay still it would have to move faster than the speed of light, making it effectively impossible.
A ship can utilize this nature by accelerating into and with the ergosphere, causing the rotational energy of the black hole to accelerate the ship. If the ship then shoots an object backwards (in its own reference frame), it gains a massive boost in energy, proportional to that of the sacrificial mass. This is called the Vernos Process by the Neneran Vitubians.
The energy gain is a reasonable 8% to 20% of the mass energy of the sacrificed mass, making acceleration this way at least 12 times more energy-efficient than optimal fusion reactors, and up to 28 times as energy efficient than optimal fusion reactors, without having to deal with the potential dangers as well as technical issues of antimatter.

It is normal for ships to use the Kideph Highway Junction without ever planning on stopping in the Nenera System.

Lanes and Channels

# of instances: 256 (Lanes)

A lane is a designated orbital around the Kideph Ral.
The Kideph Highway Junction consists of 256 lanes, with each lane having 16 G-D Stations and 2 CC Stations.

A channel is a name for the shortest route between two paired G-D Stations following the spin direction of Kideph Ral's ergosphere.
Since each lane consists of 16 G-D Stations, the maximum number of channels a lane can hold is also 16, in the case where the G-D stations of one lane are paired with the G-D Stations of another.

Each channel has enough physical space to fit two medium sized vessels side by side with enough wiggle room to travel through a Catalog Gate without collisions. A single larger ship like a battleship or a carrier usually requires four channels, or about half a lane for itself.
A single lane is not large enough to fit megastructures or truly massive ships like that of the library ships of the Hhul. Whenever objects of this size travel through the Kideph Highway Junction, they are reserved at least four entire lanes per vessel, two for the vessel to use for travel, with two extra for additional physical space for added safety as well as for any separate sub-structures vital for the object. Furthermore, objects of this size are forbidden from using the Inner Gates altogether due to the dangers associated with them.

Gate-Dredge Stations

# of instances: 4096

Unmanned structures that are capable of both opening realspace tears ("Gates") into a specified depth or the Catalog, as well as pulling an area of space ("Dredging") within a specified depth of the Catalog into realspace.

G-D Stations are always paired, with one station being a designated exit point and another being an entry point for a channel. A ship seeking to accelerate by utilizing the Kideph Highway Junction without plans to stop in the Nenera System is dredged by the exit station, and then directed to the channel leading to their designated entry station. A ship undergoing a maneuver like this effectively jumps out of the catalog for only a few seconds before being sent right back in, but with much higher velocity. This makes taking a detour through the Nenera system the fastest form of travel for some Catalog routes, even if doing so would make the trip longer.
A single G-D Station can function as the exit point for a multiple entry points, and vice versa.

It takes about ten seconds for a G-D Station to open or close a gate, and twice as long to dredge an object from the Catalog. G-D Stations of Nenera Architecture are not able to both open gates and dredge at the same time.

The G-D Stations are positioned in 3 layers around the Kideph Ral event horizon.

Inner Gates

Positioned within the ergosphere of Kideph Ral. Consists of 512 G-D Stations. These G-D Stations share the innermost 32 lanes of the Kideph Highway, and they are directed by 64 CC Stations.
The Inner Gates offer the highest acceleration but at the cost of being the most dangerous lanes to use. Thus, they are most often reserved for cargo slugs and other unmanned vessels.
Inner Gates paired with other Inner Gates can be used to repeatedly accelerate an object by having it travel through the ergosphere multiple times. In theory, this method can be used to accelerate an object close to the speed of light in realspace, although doing so is generally inefficient.

Middle Gates

Positioned around the outer edge of Kideph Ral's ergosphere. Consists of 2048 G-D Stations and 256 CC Stations, making up a total of 128 lanes.
The Middle Gates are used for high priority traffic, as they offer a good balance of acceleration and comfort.
The Middle Gates are the usual designated exit and entry points for ships that are merely passing through the Nenera System.

Outer Gates

Positioned well outside the ergosphere. Consists of 1536 G-D Stations and 192 CC Stations, making up a total of 96 lanes.
The Outer Gates are used for low-priority traffic, since the lanes utilizing only the outer gates do not utilize the Vernos process, instead relying on more conventional orbital mechanics for acceleration.
The Outer Gates are the designated exit points for ships that want to arrive into the Nenera System. They are also the gates most used for internal travel within the Nenera System.
Some of the Outer Gates have static destinations, meaning that they are always functioning as open Gates to a certain destination.

CC Stations

# of instances: 512

Manned structures that are tasked with directing the movement of ships and G-D Gates around Kideph Ral. Each CC Station is responsible for operating eight G-D Stations.
All CC Stations are located well outside the ergosphere of Kideph Ral.
Each CC Station is manned by approximately 72 000 sentient actors, both organic and GAI, as well as a few hundred thousand simpler machine intelligences. These beings work 4 month shifts, followed by a 4 month long break. The GAI of the stations do not get breaks except when necessitated.

The usual operation of a channel goes as follows:
Universal

  1. A ship is approaching Nenera System in Catalog. Gravitic and Vitubic sensors located shallow in the Catalog detect the approaching ship.
  2. The Master CC Station pings the ship, requesting open communications and asking for the ship's Register Number (if applicable).

Case 1. Unresponsive ship

  1. If the ship at step 2 does not respond, it is assumed suspicious or in distress and forcibly dredged by one of the Outer Gates for inspection and rescue.

Case 2. Passing Through

  1. If the ship is merely passing through the area in Catalog without plans of entering realspace, the communications cease and the depth of the Catalog the ship is occupying is marked reserved until the ship passes through the area.

Case 3. Destination Nenera

  1. If the ship plans on entering Nenera System, the communications are redirected to an Outer Gate CC Station.
  2. The designated CC Station acquires the Catalog depth of the ship, and reserves a channel for the ship to enter.
  3. The CC Station sends the ship the navigational data needed to follow the designated channel.
  4. The CC Station asks whether the ship can exit the Catalog on its own.
7.a. If the ship can, the CC Station asks for remote control of the ship's Catalog Drives in order to control the exit.
7.b. If the ship cannot, the CC Station reserves a G-D Station for the ship, and informs the ship that they will begin the Dredge.
  5. The CC Station will either use the ship's drives to exit Catalog, or it will use the designated G-D Station to Dredge the ship.
9.a. If the ship is stopping at Kideph Ral, the ship is directed on an exit vector from the designated channel. The communications cease.
9.b. If the destination of the ship is somewhere else in the Nenera System, the CC Station pings the designated entry G-D Station..
  6. If necessary, communications are redirected to another CC Station responsible for the entry point G-D Station.
  7. The CC Station either uses the ship's Catalog Drives to enter the Catalog at the designated point, or directs the ship through an open G-D Station. Communications with the Kideph Highway Junction cease.

Case 4. Re-Direction or Acceleration

  1. If the ship plans on using the Kideph Highway Junction Array for acceleration or re-direction, the Master CC Station requests data necessary for determining the priority of the ship.
  2. The Master CC Station redirects the communications to a Middle Gate CC Station (For high priority) or Outer Gate CC Station (for low priority).
  3. The designated CC Station acquires the Catalog depth of the ship, and reserves a channel for the ship to enter.
  4. The CC Station sends the ship the navigational data needed to follow the designated channel.
  5. The CC Station asks whether the ship can exit the Catalog on its own.
8.a. If the ship can, the CC Station asks for remote control of the ship's Catalog Drives in order to control the exit.
8.b. If the ship cannot, the CC Station reserves a G-D Station for the ship, and informs the ship that they will begin the Dredge.
  6. The CC Station will either use the ship's drives to exit Catalog, or it will use the designated G-D Station to Dredge the ship.
  7. The CC Station pings the designated entry G-D Station.
  8. The CC Station either uses the ship's Catalog Drives to enter the Catalog at the designated point, or directs the ship through an open G-D Station. Communications with the Kideph Highway Junction cease

Note: In the case of ships that are able to exit and enter the Catalog on their own that are also for one reason or another considered to be high-privacy-priority, the CC Stations will not request remote access to the ship's Catalog Drives, instead sending them the navigational data for accurate exit/entry at the designated points.

Other Structures

# of instances: 512

The remaining sub-structures of the array are a variety of communications amplifiers, security stations, Electromagnetic, Gravitic, and Vitubic sensor arrays, energy storage units, as well as Master CC Stations that are responsible for directing the CC Stations themselves.

Safety

Since Kideph Ral is a stellar mass black hole, any object coming close to it is subject to intense tidal forces of up to 800 standard G's for a 1.8m tall person at the event horizon. This means that in effect, anything less tough than steel is unlikely to withstand the gravitational stresses of using the Inner Gates without Vitubic protection.

"Kideph Ral" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "Nightcrown (star)". A spinning black hole of slightly over 32 solar masses. The age and origins of Kideph Ral are unknown, but it is theorized that the object is older than the Vitubian Nebula itself.

Lakot Ral

ID Proposal: nenera_2
Parent: Kideph Ral
Type: Star (K-type Main Sequence)
# of Satellites: 2 Major

"Lakot Ral" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "Little Flame (star)" or "Little Light (star)". A K-type main sequence star of roughly 0.8 solar masses. Lakot Ral's exact age is unknown, but it is highly likely to be much younger than Kideph Ral, implying that the two objects do not share a common origin. Instead, it is theorized that Lakot Ral wandered close to the black hole at some point during the tumultuous formation of the Core Cluster, and was captured into it's orbit, losing most of her own satellites in the process.

Planets

Shanlur Viti

ID Proposal: nenera_3
Parent: Lakot Ral
Type: Planet
Temperature: Hot
Volatile: Airless
Composition: Terra
# of Satellites: None

"Shanlur Viti" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "(Name1)". Shanlur Viti is the innermost planet of the Nenera system and one of the few major objects that orbit Lakot Ral instead of Kideph Ral or the Nenera System barycenter. Shanlur Viti is a tidally locked scorching hot world completely unsuitable for life. As the planet orbits around Lakot Ral, it spends time in between the star and Kideph Ral, which subjects the planet to massive tidal forces. This causes Shanlur Viti's crust to periodically stretch and compress, which in turn gives rise to high amount of volcanism; At any given time, large swathes of the planet's surface are covered in lava squeezed out of its mantle by the aforementioned gravitational stress.

Valrakis Viti

ID Proposal: nenera_5
Parent: Kideph Ral
Type: Planet
Temperature: Temperate
Volatile: Marine (Aquastrine)
Composition: Terra
# of Satellites: 2

"Valrakis Viti" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "(Name2)". Valrakis Viti is the only Vitubia-like planet in the Nenera system, although to any layman the planet would seem to be very far from Vitubia. Valrakis Viti is an arid world with a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere tolerable (but un-optimal) to most Vitubian lifeforms. Most of the planet's surface is covered in dust, rocky canyons, and mesas, with liquid water present in the form of underground lakes and rivers, as well as in the more temperate sub-polar regions of the planet in the form of shallow and scattered salty lakes. Large populations of photosynthesizing algae dye the waters and the coasts of these lakes with a pale green hue, and form the basis of the foodweb for the planet's biosphere, which comprises mostly of Vitubian lifeforms brought over during the early expansion period of Vitubian stellar civilization. Xenoarchaeological findings on the planet suggest that it once hosted a rich and diverse biosphere, which was then completely wiped out by an event that left most of the planet's surface molten for thousands of years. The currently accepted theory is that this event was Lakot Ral's arrival into the Nenera System.

Kirpher Viti

ID Proposal: nenera_7
Parent: Kideph Ral
Type: Planet
Temperature: Cool
Volatile: Gas Giant
Composition: n/a
# of Satellites: 64

"Kirpher Viti" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "(Name3)". Kirpher Viti is a massive pale blue gas giant with a thin planetary ring and a 64 moons. The gravitational influence of Kirpher Viti keeps most of the SSBs found in the 1st Nenera asteroid belts from bombarding the inner planets of the system. Kirpher Viti alone comprises roughly 88% of the Nenera system's mass, not accounting for Lakot Ral and Kideph Ral, and as such its influence dominates the outer regions of the Nenera system. As the gas giant orbits around the barycenter of the system, it pulls behind and ahead of itself "waves" of asteroids trapped in its lagrange points. These asteroid waves are known as "Inner Kirpher Deadbeats", and they originate from both the 1st and 2nd Nenera asteroid belts. There also exists a less defined waves of asteroids known as "Outer Kirpher Deadbeats", which follow the gas giant's orbit in the Nenera outer asteroid belt. Sometimes SSBs of the Outer Kirpher Deadbeats transition through the orbits of Wurud and Valmir into the 2nd Nenera asteroid belt.

Dwarf Planets

Kasher

ID Proposal: nenera_4
Parent: Lakot Ral
Type: Planet
Temperature: Hot
Volatile: Airless
Composition: Terra
# of Satellites: None

"Kasher" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "(Name4)". Kasher is the other major object orbiting Lakot Ral, and like Shanlur Viti, Kasher is also a scorching hot tidally locked volcanic world. Kasher is comprised mostly of rock and metals.

Ilmasht

ID Proposal: nenera_6
Parent: Kideph Ral
Type: Planet
Temperature: Cool
Volatile: Airless
Composition: Terra
# of Satellites: None

"Ilmasht" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "(Name5)". Ilmasht is a rocky dwarf planet located in the 1st Nenera asteroid belt, between Valrakis Viti and Kirpher Viti. Ilmasht is a "mud world", with about 16% of the crust comprising of water ice, 82% being rock, and the remaining 2% being a mixture of metals and elements. Ilmasht has no significant tectonic activity.

Irilar

ID Proposal: nenera_8
Parent: Kideph Ral
Type: Planet
Temperature: Cool
Volatile: Marine
Composition: Aquaria
# of Satellites: 1

"Irilar" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "(Name6)". Irilar is an icy dwarf planet located between Kirpher Viti and the 2nd Nenera asteroid belt. Irilar probably formed inside the asteroid belt, but was at some point pulled away from it by Kirpher Viti's gravitational influence. If not for Kirpher Viti, Irilar may have had formed into a full fledged planet, most likely a frozen "water world". Irilar is comprised 32% of water ice and liquid water, and 68% of rock and metals. Irilar has some tectonic activity. It is known that beneath the thick layer of ice that covers Irilar exists vast oceans kept liquid by the warmth of the dwarf planet's core. Irilar is subject to frequent and periodic bombardment by Inner Kirpher Deadbeat asteroids shortly before and after Kirpher Viti passes by the dwarf planet.

Wurud

ID Proposal: nenera_9
Parent: Kideph Ral
Type: Planet
Temperature: Cold
Volatile: Airless
Composition: Aquaria
# of Satellites: 2

"Wurud" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "(Name7)". Wurud is an icy dwarf planet located in the outer regions of the 2nd Nenera asteroid belt. Wurud is comprised 48% of water ice and 52% of rock and metals. Unlike Irilar, Wurud has no liquid oceans beneath its ice sheets. Wurud has no significant tectonic activity.

Valmir

ID Proposal: nenera_10
Parent: Kideph Ral
Type: Planet
Temperature: Cold
Volatile: Airless
Composition: Ferria
# of Satellites: 3

"Valmir" from one of the ancient proto-vitubian languages, translating to "(Name8)". Valmir is a freezing cold dwarf planet located in between the 2nd Nenera asteroid belt and the Nenera outer asteroid belt, in an area with little to no SSBs. Valmir's size suggests that these "missing" SSBs were not absorbed into the dwarf planet during it's formation, instead the most likely theory is that Kirpher Viti's influence has pulled most of the SSBs in this region into the 2nd Nenera asteroid belt, leaving Valmir alone in a relatively empty "band" of space between the 2nd Nenera asteroid belt and the Nenera outer asteroid belt. While small by radius, Valmir is surprisingly massive, owing to large portion of the dwarf planet comprising of iron and other metals. Valmir is subject to occasional bombardment by the Outer Kirpher Deadbeat asteroids as they transit from the Nenera outer asteroid belt into the 2nd Nenera asteroid belt.
