Xarnithis

The Xarnithis is a perpetually curious species found in the outer areas of charted space. Their organic structure consists of semi-transparent purple flesh bordering on black, and slightly visible organs that have vividly purple hues. Within the flesh, their organs float in a gelatinous-like material. When this internal material is exposed to oxygen, it becomes watery before solidifying into the very flesh material the creatures have on the exterior. The skeletal structure is made up of a dark purple crystalline material that forms multi-jointed limbs around a vertically positioned torso giving them a spider-like appearance minus the thorax, while their arms feature hands with elongated fingers that are needle-like appendages. Their eyes are a set of three faceted ocular organs capable of perceiving multiple spectrums of light and electromagnetic waves. What we might refer to as their "mouths", is actually an orifice that is designed for emitting a complex range of sound frequencies, and not for consuming matter. On the exterior, they have a thin exoskeleton around the torso area made up of the same crystalline material their skeleton is made up of and can sustain many types of prolonged physical damage before shattering. It is also seemingly immune to acid and fire, and is liquid proof where all liquid simply rolls off. The exoskeleton currently has no known melting point.

Upon gazing at a Xarnithis for the first time, they might seem like they would be formidable warriors, but are actually quite delicate and easily intimidated. Their exterior flesh can be easily pinched off or pulled apart in chunks with absolutely no effort. They are almost air-like in this sense. Their crystalline skeleton is another story on the other hand. It is highly durable, and is able to repair itself at the cost of using its own skeletal material to "cauterize" the damage. Like all organic life forms, the brain is the quickest method of killing a Xarnithis, when chipping away at it's exoskeleton gets too cumbersome.

What makes them dangerous though?

Their finger tips are capable of releasing a chemical that is injected through the skin and begins a process in an organic being known as Signal Severance which isolates the victim's motor cortex while preserving sensory and cognitive functions. Once the victim is completely immobilized, they remain fully aware of their surroundings and sensations. While it can be considered a defense mechanism, it's purpose is more sophisticated than that. A Xarnithis will then begin to "unpack" the victim in physical sections, organ by organ, down to the bone. All the while, the victim is powerless and can do nothing but hope it all ends soon.

Xarnithis' are scientist by definition, studying all living beings using this method. Sometimes they keep captives and perform long term experiments on them before beginning the Signal Severance "ritual." At this point, the victim become a test subject. The subject is immobile allowing a Xarnithis to observe real-time biological responses without the interference of physical movement. Once the process is completed, they will usually absorb any new biochemical data, otherwise they will simply discard the remains. It's not unusual that the victim or subject is somehow still alive.
