The clock ticked from the corner
The fridge hummed
Letting an arm hang down from where he was sitting, a silver-furred fox idly scratched at the neck of his pet
Unconsciously he let his digits slip through his human's white hair
It had thinned over the years, but the fox had taken great care to make sure his pet kept as much as he could of his once-golden brown hair
He didn't know if his human cared as much as he did about it, but the fox had always enjoyed combing through it with his paws
Looking over to the clock, he noticed that it was around midday
He ruffled his human's hair, stirring him from a peaceful sleep
He'd always wonder what his pet dreamt about.
Hey Chief, you ready for our walk?
Slowly his human raised his head up, tired eyes finding the fox's
His human started to move, joints creaking from age and from rest
he watched his human try to stand, before his legs wobbled and gave out, dropping him back down onto his rear
Luckily it had only been about a foot in the air above his fluffy bed
Seeing his human having trouble standing up, he thought back to their earlier years together
The fox had been so young when his parents got him his human cub
They'd been inseparable from that first day, going on adventures together, finding new things and seeing new sights
he remembered how much fun they had just running together, chasing each other around, wrestling and laughing and fighting
He'd been like the brother he'd never had
Coming back to the present, his human had tried to get up, and had fallen back again, letting out a sad whine
As his own joints creaked, the fox wondered if his human dreamed the same things he did, ran over past memories in his head of when they were younger
he hoped it didn't make him sad
While they might not be able to do all the things they used to any longer, they still had each other
His human tried to get up a third time, but this time the fox reached out, placing his paw on his human's head calming him and settling him down
His eyes met his pet's, his brother's, and he smiled, running his digits through his human's hair, gently stroking his head
It's alright, Chief, we'll go for a walk tomorrow, okay~?
He doubted his human could really understand him
But when he smiled up at him, and faintly nodded
The fox wondered, and smiled back, petting his human more
They'd go for a walk tomorrow
