Y99 Tourney Streaming Guide

For hosts and players who are required to stream their POV when the game lacks a spectate feature.

Requirements

  • A decent PC or laptop with decent RAM (at least 8GB).
  • A decent Internet connection (at least 5Mbps for downstream and upstream).
  • A streaming software.
  • An adblocker such as uBlock Origin

Join the Video Call

  • Click JOIN CALL from the moderator's message in the chat screen, or click on the invite link.
  • Click Ask to Join and wait for them to approve your request (if possible). ✱
  • Enter the password (if possible).
  • Click Allow.

✱ If you see that button then the call's in lockdown. Knock the moderator's door before joining.

You should now be able to stream your POV. If you're new to video calls, you should learn some stuffs below:
I don't have time for this.

Video Call Interface

Control Bar
Your control bar is at the bottom of the screen.

  • Mute / Unmute / Start / Stop Camera : Self-explanatory. Careful not to dox yourself.
    • : Opens the Audio and Video Settings; lets you quickly change your video, microphone, and speaker.
  • Start / Stop Sharing your Screen : Self-explanatory. Careful not to show you're /here/.
  • Open / Close Chat : Opens the chat sidebar.
  • Raise / Lower your Hand : Raises your virtual hand.
    • : Opens the Reaction Menu; lets you react audibly.
  • Participants : Opens Participant List.
  • Toggle Tile View : Arranges and swaps between video thumbnails.
  • More Actions : Opens a menu containing more relevant options:
    • Your Name: Lets you change your name.
    • Manage Video Quality: Self-explanatory.
    • Start Live Streaming: Uses your YouTube stream key to stream for you (untested; likely a security and privacy risk).
    • Share Video: Lets you share a video or live stream with a direct URL.

User Thumbnails
They reside in an invisible pane on the right side of the screen. You can hide the thumbnails by clicking on the small arrow button.

There are two types of user thumbnails:

  • (You): Your video thumbnail is always at the upper corner of the pane.
  • Other: Their video thumbnails are always at the lower corner of the pane.

You can swap focus by clicking on the video thumbnail (including yours).

Minimize Call

  • To minimize the call: Click the button in the right corner of the title bar. ✱
  • To restore the call: Click the button in the upper right corner of the screen. ✱

✱ You must be in a chat room to see the title bar. It's pointless if you join the call from somewhere other than this site.

Close Call
There are two ways to close the call:

  • Click the button in the right corner of the title bar. ✱
  • Click the button in your control bar. ✱²

✱ Need to be in a chat room to see the button.
✱² This will take you to the Y99 Meet homepage ( APPS > Y99 Meet).

Video Call Chatting

Chat Sidebar
You can open the chat sidebar by clicking the button in your control bar

Polling
You can also make polls by clicking the Poll tab in the chat sidebar.

Private Messaging
You can PM anyone in a video call by doing one of the following:

  • Hover over beside the user thumbnail and click Send Private Message.
  • Click while hovering over the user in the participant list and click Send Private Message.

It's also a great way to avoid getting the wrong players in your lobby. Useful for the games with a simple lobby invite or code system.

Set Up Your Stream

Choose your streaming setup:

I'd rather not stream.

Direct Streaming

In order to go live, you'll need a YouTube account.

  • Create your burner Google account and YouTube account if you haven't already.
  • Click the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen and click Go live.
  • Click REQUEST.
  • Complete the verification process Google is throwing at you and wait for their approval.
    No way fag.

When you're allowed to go live, you might want to edit some settings first.

  • Go to your YouTube Studio Live Control Room by clicking the Go live again.
  • Click START in the Right Now panel.
  • Click GO in the Streaming Software panel.
  • Click EDIT in the right corner of the title panel.

Under the Details section, change some of these settings:

  • Visibility: Change it to Unlisted.
  • Playlists: Create a playlist for each game for the sake of organization, retrospection, and documentation (optional but recommended).
  • Audience: Select No, it's not made for kids.
  • Age restriction (advanced): Select No, don't restrict my video to viewers over 18 only.
  • License: Select the Allow embedding checkbox.

Return to your YouTube Studio Live Control Room live screen to change a few things:

  • Under Stream Settings, copy your stream key by clicking the COPY button (optional for alternative methods).
  • You may select Unlist live replay once stream ends checkbox (optional).
  • Under Stream Latency, choose your option below:
Stream Latency Normal Low ✱ Ultra-low

Viewer Buffering Least Moderate Most
Stream Delay (seconds) High (30s max) Moderate (≈10s) Low (≈2s)
Supported Resolutions 4K 1440p 1080p

✱ Recommended: provides decent quality and playback while keeping the commentators and viewers up-to-date.

After changing your YouTube streaming settings, you'll need to set up your OBS Studio as well.

  • Download the OBS Studio Installer or Portable Version.
  • Run the installer or extract the files.
  • Open OBS Studio.
  • Select Optimize for streaming, recording is secondary and click Next. ✱
  • Choose the native resolution from the Based (Canvas) Resolution drop-down list.
  • Select the Either 60 or 30, but prefer 60 when possible option from the FPS drop-down list and then click Next.
  • Select the YouTube - RTMPS option from the Service drop-down list.
  • Click Connect Account and complete your authentication; or click Use Stream Key (advanced) and paste it in the text box.
  • Choose the following option for the Prefer hardware encoding checkbox:
    • Select if you have a decent GPU. It improves quality while using less CPU power and affecting little to no performance.
    • Clear if you have a powerful CPU (at least an i5 or Ryzen 5). Depending on your CPU and the resolution of the stream and the game, it will have an impact on your performance. ✱²
  • Click Next and wait for the streaming test to complete.
  • When done, review the result and then click Apply Settings.
  • Go to Settings > Audio > Global Audio Devices and select the Default option from the Desktop Audio drop-down list.

✱ If this isn't your first time, make a new profile or run the Auto-Configuration Wizard from the Tools drop-down menu.
✱² You can try reducing the impact by downscaling your stream and resolution.

Now you just have to make some basic layout.

  • Click the button under the Sources panel and select Game Capture or Window Capture.
  • Select Create new, name your capture source and click OK.
  • Open the Mode drop-down list and select Capture specific window (Game Capture).
  • Open the Window drop-down list and target the appropriate game.

You're good to go. Also, you might have to adjust your layout.
I don't have time for this.

Virtual Camera

If you're using the Portable Version, you'll need to install the virtual camera plugin first.

  • Go to obs-studio\data\obs-plugins\win-dshow\
  • Run virtualcam-install.bat

Then follow these steps:

  • Open OBS Studio.
  • Select I will only be using the virtual camera and then click Next and Apply Settings. ✱
  • Click the button under the Sources panel and select Game Capture or Window Capture.
  • Select Create new option, name your capture source and click OK.
  • Open the Mode drop-down list and select Capture specific window (Game Capture).

✱ If this isn't your first time, make a new profile or use the Auto-Configuration Wizard from the Tools drop-down menu.

You're good to go. Also, you might have to adjust your layout.
I don't have time for this.

Screen Sharing

Warning! It can be laggy and it caps at 30fps.

  • In the video call, click the button in your control bar and click Settings.
  • Switch to the More tab, and open the Desktop Sharing Frame Rate drop-down list.
  • Select 30 Frames-Per-Second and click OK.

You're good to go.

Some Adjustments

You might need to adjust some things before moving to the next step.
I don’t have time for this.

Windowed Mode

Unless you have a second monitor, it's better to play in Windowed Mode, as alt-tabbing, accidental or not, could glitch out and render unplayable. Alternatively, you may play in Borderless Fullscreen.

In some cases, games that require precision to perform well like FPS and rhythm games, then Fullscreen is the way to go.

Capture Layout

Adjust the Game Capture or Window Capture in the preview if it's too small or big.

  • Reposition the source in the preview by dragging its inner bounding box to the desired location.
  • Resize the source in the preview by dragging the corner or the edge of its bounding box.
    • Hold Shift while dragging to keep its aspect ratio.
    • Hold Alt while dragging to crop its image.
  • Go to the the Transform menu by right-clicking the source in the preview or Sources panel.
    • Select Center to Screen if it's small; or Fit to Screen if it's big.
    • Select Edit Transform for more precision.
  • Click Reset Transform if something goes wrong.

Performance Impact

Click Here to Read OBS Project General Performance And Encoding Issues.

Downscaling the Output Resolution

  • Go to Settings > Video in your OBS Studio.
  • Change it to anything lower than your native or preferred resolution from the Output (Scaled) Resolution drop-down list.
  • For Downscale Filter, you can test each option to see which one works best for you.

Reducing the Framerate

  • In Settings > Video.
  • Change the framerate values to 48, 30 or 24 from the drop-down list.
  • Experiment each framerate to find the sweet spot.

Lowering Your Graphic Settings
You can try lowering graphic settings to reduce the performance impact. Though, even if you have a decent GPU, any game that's CPU-heavy may still negatively impact both your streaming and gaming experience.

Dual-PC Streaming
It's an expensive improvement but it's the only way to stream and game with little to no impact on the performance. It's definitely not recommended but if you're a richfag and you want to have the best streaming experience for everybody, then maybe this is for you.

Click here to Read an In-depth Guide About Setting Up Your Dual PC (Probably reliable, or just search it up yourself).

Enable Your Stereo Mix

Warning! This is based on Windows. Mac and Linux users may have different results.

Only follow these instruction if you're planning to use Virtual Camera or Screen Sharing methods.
Everything's fine.

  • Click Sounds to bring up the Sound window, and switch to the Recording tab.
  • Right-click anywhere in the white area and click Show Disabled Devices.

  • Right-click the button in the left corner of your taskbar.
  • Click Device Manager and expand Sounds, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click Realtek High Definition Audio and click Update driver.

    • For 64bits, download 64bits Vista, Windows7, Windows8, Windows8.1, Windows10 Driver only (Executable file).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can't I just compete without streaming?

You could try asking your opponent to stream their POV instead. If they refuse, you either stream or watch.
