Y99 Tourney Host Advanced

For hosts who want to make fancy tourney broadcast like the ones on eSports and EVO.

Requirements

  • A fast internet connection.
  • Any creative skills.
  • Multitasking skills.
  • Decent commentary skills.

Create Your Overlays

You'll need a lot of resources if you want to spice up your tourneys with scoreboards and transitions. You can probably easily design something simple or cool, depending on your creativity. You don't have to go all out with your designs or spend a lot of money on commissions just for the overlays. Start small first.
I don’t need overlays.

Recommended free paint tools:

  • MSPaint: Best tool to start simple. Basic tools such as Brush, Pen and Lines you can use for your symmetrical overlays.
  • Paint.NET: A more advanced alternative of MS Paint. Includes layering, transforming, filters and pressure sensitivity.
  • FireAlpaca: The best painting tool for beginners. It has everything mentioned above, plus the ability to customize your brushes, and a Brush Store that lets you to instantly download and install most brushes and tools for free.

Expand your ideas and creativity by cruising the internet for sources of inspiration, or seek advice from the threads and tourney experts. After that, search up the overlay plugins like scoreboard plugin to learn how to use them for your OBS Studio effectively and efficiently.

Check if the Game has Spectate

It Does

Then you can ignore this guide. Simply launch the game and watch their current match, then begin streaming the showdown and share it with your tourney, complete with cool scoreboard overlays and transitions. No additional setup required.

It Doesn't

Then you've come to the right place. It's mandatory for the players to stream their POVs and have their POVs forwarded to your video call for everyone to see. Though, it's not an easy setup, so you'll need a lot of patience and stamina to deal with this limitation.

Start Another Video Call

Since the game doesn't have a spectate feature, you need a way to see their games. For now, the goal is to make dual video calls.

  • Before starting another call, be sure that the chat room is empty so nobody can enter the new one.
    • Otherwise, reasonably announce that they'll all be kicked out and then go to Room Settings > MEMBERS and click KICK for all non-moderators.
  • Start a new video call.
  • Join the new call and copy the invite link from the More Actions menu in the control bar.
  • Delete the message that contains the new call in the chat room. ✱
  • Keep the invite link you just copied for future reference. ✱²
  • Invite the users back to your chat room again.

✱ It's to avoid confusion and chaos caused by users accidentally joining the new calls intended for players willing to stream their POVs.
✱² If that video call is already in use by someone else for any reason, just start a new one and follow the steps above. It's also a good idea to save your old invite links in case they become available to take control later.

Your main call will be used for communication and spectating by everyone, and the new call will be mainly used for streaming the players' POVs. To make this guide less confusing later on, let's call the former "Tourney Call" and the latter "POV Call."

PM the Players

It's best to PM the players before sharing their POV streams during the tournament. Each player will most likely use a different method of streaming for each round, so if you're not prepared, you'll end up wasting everyone's time.

Inquire with the player about their streaming methods for each round beforehand. Once you have the answer, tweak your OBS Studio and video calls a bit to match their streaming methods. Switching between Scenes in OBS Studio can make your life as a host a little easier, so when you have time, learn to use the Scenes effectively and efficiently.

There are a few things to keep in mind:

  • If the player's planning to use Direct Streaming, there's no need for the player to enter the POV Call and use the Share Video feature. Their direct stream URL should be enough.
  • If the player wishes to use the video call for their POVs, then they have to enter the POV Call.

You should also encourage players to use the PM to share their lobby invites and codes rather than chat rooms, where any unwanted opponent could see their invitations and join their lobbies accidentally or maliciously.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not invite them to my streaming site instead?

This goal of this guide is to keep every anon as anonymous and as far away from D*sc*rd as possible, but whether or not they care about their anonymity is entirely up to you and them. So, go ahead and do it if you believe and are confident that they will come directly to your stream without doxing you and themselves. Just don't let it devolve into another D*sc*rd or Twitter circlejerk.
