Serene Republic of Syrenia during the times of Pomerlane

The Serene Republic of Syrenia is one of the oldest states in Ninisani, but only became a republic after the overthrow of its monarchy in 754. It's politics are dominated by the patricians from its capital of Atalanta. Families like the Aquilii, Flaminii, Tarquinii, and the Volumnii dominate the politics of the Republic through their vast wealth acquired from trade. Each "Doge" is elected as the head of the Republic for life and is elected by the Tribunal of 100. Legend has it that the Goddess Finana Ryuguard herself founded the city of Atalanta, which has become known as the Pearl of the Vesta. Atalanta is a city at the mouth of the Vesta River and is built on an island.

The Republic has a powerful navy, the most powerful in all of Ninisani and a large merchant fleet it uses to bring in vast amounts of wealth, that have truly made Atalanta live up to her reputation. It's army is made of male citizens from across the republic, and is organized based on age, with the youngest forming the front line in their triplex battleline and the oldest the rear.

It has always maintained great relations with it's neighbors and especially with it's traditional allies in LazuLight and hasn't fought in a war in around 100 years to this date. Because of this, complacency and corruption have plagued its administration and the rich grow richer while the poor grow poorer in the realm. Attempts to reform the system have routinely fell on deaf ears and collective rot has beset the state.

Still, Syrenia, as of 1102, remains in a good position within the Empire and its current Doge, Florus Aquilius Corvus, hopes to maintain the status quo for the future to come. He has been in power for 20 years now and at 62, has plenty of experience under his belt.
