Time until appointed class time: 00:02 - barely on time. Nana wasn't sure what to expect from what her classmates would be like. What real shinobi aspirants are like, compared to the few things she knew about real ones. These were people comparable to her sensei, so they had to be on another level compared to normal people. Whatever vague impression she may have had was shattered as soon as Momika opened the door to the classroom.
The mood was a mix, with varied personalities spread across the room like an emotional battlefield. Colorful strange clothes, people with unique hair and skin and physiologies and wooden limbs. There was a girl outside sitting in a tree, and even a big metal cocoon being prodded by other students, only to end up with more chains being added to it. It would make Nana's head spin if she tried to comprehend it all at once.
A girl with prosthetic arms approached the two of them first, introducing herself cheerfully. Nana attempted to keep her chin up and look her in the eye, but let her sensei handle the talking and the introductions.
She felt a slight push on her back, and she knew it was from her sensei. A silent signal, so Nana looked up at Momika to try to intuit what she was being told to do. Even while she was in conversation with someone, Momika's eyes flickered subtly but intentionally towards a quieter section of the classroom, where only some of the seated students that weren't in conversation with anyone else were at.
Did she want Nana to reserve their seats? She could do that, but probably not just that. She would just ask if that was it. It was likely to do with the other students.
Ah, social practice. She remembers her lessons, first impressions are very important. Those other students weren't talking to anyone else, so it'd be a good time to try to get a solo introduction done without risk of being overwhelmed. Momika-sensei is so smart.
"Sensei, I'm going ahead."
A few people were in good positions to try to engage in introductions with. Nana chose to start with the girl in the corner, because she was interesting. Skin and hair like snow, and even pale eyes that matched. She was like the yuki-onna from the scary stories she was told when she was younger. Such a curious sight naturally drew Nana in. Unfortunately, this wasn't as simple of a target as she'd hoped.
"She's looking at me suspiciously. I'm not trying to steal anything this time, though. Okay... sensei would... give one of our prepared gifts to smooth things over."
After standing in front of Kosshi's desk and forgetting to actually say anything first, Nana produces a small wooden doll from her sleeve, placing it on the desk. She had carved it herself, so it was free! Sensei told her that gifts like that are a good way to get people to warm up to you.
"What do you want?"
For some reason, the gift only made the other girl even more suspicious, her voice cold. She had made things worse!
"It didn't work? Did I give it wrong? Or does she hate dolls? Okay, sensei would... would... flatter her to catch her off guard? She must put a lot of work to make her skin and hair look like that. Go!"
After continuing to stand there silently staring at Kosshi while lost in thought, the pale girl was about to say something that was probably bitingly venomous, Nana cut her off with her own exclamation.
"You're really white!"
It in a way produced the outcome she was looking for, it certainly caught Kosshi off guard. The words died in the other girl's throat as she seemed to just be trying to figure out what Nana is even trying to get at. At this point, so is Nana.
"Why isn't she happy? She is really white, just like she wanted! No, I forgot to smile! Is it too late to smile?"
Not knowing what else to do, Nana forces an awkward smile. In real time, it was preceded and proceeded by two beats of awkward silence between the two of them.
"...This isn't working! I need to ask sensei what I did wrong, because I think she hates me now!"
Nana takes a step backwards, bumping into the desk behind her and making it loudly skid on the floor.
"Wait, no, I didn't even actually introduce myself! I- I don't-"
"I'm Nana!"
After declaring her name a lot louder than she intended, Nana abandons any more attempts at talking to people and swiftly turns around to half run back towards the front of the class. Halfway down, she bumps her knee into another desk and almost stumbles before resuming her escape, now with her black scarf pulled up to cover her embarrassed face. When she reaches the bottom, she attaches herself to Momika's side, grasping onto her sensei's sash with one hand and keeping her scarf raised up with the other.
