Origin: The Charged-Up Hero, Miracle
The Katsuryoku Household, 5 Years Ago
The Katsuryoku family is a relatively well off middle-class family, having reliable work as electricians across Kyoto and wider Japan due to them having several generations of electricity related Quirks. They were lucky that they had their Quirks be a particularly dominant genetic factor, so unlike some others they were nowhere near desperate enough as to commit the sin of Quirk Marriage in order to keep up their business.
Though unfortunately while their Quirk Factor was indeed potent enough to be more than reliably passed down the generations, the men within the family also had a far higher than normal amount of infertility. It was to the point where every child born from a male Katsuryoku member was considered a Miracle, and were spoiled and loved to the highest degree they possibly could be. Thus, that is where our story begins with one Shinohara Katsuryoku, son of Senzai and Teki Katsuryoku, being the father and mother respectively.
Senzai is a tall and strong man that has black hair with blue streaks across the sides who is, predictably, an electrician by trade. His Quirk is Charge Grab, allowing him to produce white electrical constructs shaped around his arms to handle whatever electrical equipment he needs to without getting harmed. He's generally humble, taking whatever problems come his way in stride and is known to be a very resourceful individual, able to pull through problems via sheer gumption. Though when it comes to his son, he does have a fair bit of pride about his little Miracle, being one of the few men in the family to be able to participate in the joys of fatherhood.
Speaking of his wife, Teki is a quite short and petite woman with long black hair. Her career is that of a physicist, which uses her quirk Ionic Battery to study the properties of energy via producing it herself and undergoing extensive testing with it with along with her colleagues. She's by far the more book smart of the two, able to do complex equations in her head that would send her husband reeling even with a calculator. She fell in love with thin college, as they were both studying Electrical Engineering, though for her it was her minor while Senzai mostly did it out of tradition while doing trades on the side. She was the only reason he passed the course.
Teki's job as a physicist made much more income than the Katsuryoku family was used to. In fact, Senzai retired early in order to spend as much time as he can with his son, knowing that seeing his lovely wife and son every day will make it all worth it. And though Teki had plans to move to more online work to be able to be there when she had a child, she was taken way off guard when they actually managed to conceive, having her well-laid plans immediately crumble by the might of the villain known as Morning Sickness.
Eventually they managed to settle down after the introduction of Shinohara into their lives, and were all the better for it. The little scamp was a prodigy, inheriting both his mother's brains and his father's improvisational prowess and will, possibly even better versions of the both of them. His quirk was powerful to boot too, Overcharge. His body produced a nigh-endless amount of red-white plasmic energy, and his personality reflected that with him being an even more tightly wrapped bundle of joy than usual for his doting parents.
Like any over-eager child with a powerful quirk, Shinohara wanted to be a Hero, a paragon of society, someone any and all would look up to. He was homeschooled, and loved training and experimenting with his Quirk whenever he got the chance with his parents endorsing every step of the way, knowing their precious Miracle could do whatever he set his mind too.
Though capable Quirk and Mind weren't enough to become a Hero, even if some would say otherwise. Luckily even with budding cases of Quirk-Addiction, Megalomania, and Narcissism, Senzai and Teki were more than able to establish the first and most important foundation of a truly great Hero. A Good Heart, and a desire to help those around themselves. Even though Shinohara would often get a big head about his accomplishments, his parents made sure to somewhat humble the boy in order to keep him centered on using his great gifts to help others.
And that brings us to the story.
Senzai was making some grilled salmon for breakfast, wearing a loose cargo shirt and pants along with his work boots. Something about his grandfather telling him " a Katsuryuko is always most comfortable in an electricians uniform" unconsciously rang through his head, with him wearing and maintaining the thing even though he had been technically retired and was soley a househusband for a bit under a decade at this point.
Teki was lazing about on a couch in the living room after having a long night yesterday in pajamas and fluffy blue slippers. There was also a labcoat, goggles, gloves, and other such PPE (Personal Protectice Equipment) strewn about on the couch. All because she worked from home doesn't mean she didn't need it.
A 10-year old Shinohara had just made a crucial decision for his heroic career. He bowled down the stairs to exclaim his decision to his parents in the kitchen once he got up.
"I've got it! When I'm old enough I'm gonna go to Shiketsu High to become a Hero! I've even got the Hero name down and everything!"
His parents smiled. They had already saved up to get a tuition to either U.A. or Shiketsu in their piggy bank, knowing that their son wouldn't settle for anything but the best. Though they were silently thankful they didn't have to move to Mustafu for their son's education, even if they would've done it without hesitation. Though there was something that they didn't currently know that Teki asked.
"Alright then lil' Miracle, what's your hero name gonna be? What are the people gonna exclaim when they see you saving the day?"
Shinohara blushed a little, but after a couple seconds puffed out his little chest and declared it forth.
"Well since you guys are always calling me Miracle, I'm gonna be the Laser Hero: Miracle!"
While neither Teki nor Senzai ever wanted to disappoint their son, Senzai unfortunately had to in this instance.
"Son, I'm afraid the Laser Hero title has already been taken. In fact, it's held by one of the Top Ten, The Laser Hero: Majestic."
This was an outrage! And Shinohara pouted and stomped his foot to indicate such, which looked quite adorable to his parents.
"No fair! I wanted that name! I spent all night thinking of it Thats it! Whoever that guy is, I'll surpass him! I'll become a much better hero than he ever was!"
With a glimmer of plasma coming from his eyes he meant it. From his mother on the couch was even a muttered,
"That'll be easier than you think."
Though while they were certainly happy for their child's dreams and ambitions, they were a bit concerned about what they came about from. Afterall, they would rather not have their Miracle be on the same wavelength as the Majestic that they now began to unconsciously dislike just a little bit more due to the entirely petty reason of unintentionally making Shinohara sad. Senzai finished the salmon, and went over to ruffle the pure black hair on his son's head began speaking again.
"Just remember lil' Miracle, what makes a Hero is that they use everything they've got to fight and protect people from harm and fear. No amount of money can ever replace the hope that people give you. That whether it's an evil villain or an earthquake, someone will be there to save them. Perhaps it will be a certain Miracle that saves them one of these days."
Senzai was quite lucky that his son was as intelligent as he is, and that he could immediately absorb the lesson into his head and heart almost instantly.
Shinohara nodded his head as his father ruffled his hair once more and went to go get breakfast for them. Teki got up form the couch to sit at the dining room table.
During breakfast, Shinohara had another new development to share with his parents, this one even more important in his immediate mind than the last, to the point where he had to share it at breakfast with a gleam in his eyes.
"I discovered lest night that there this really cool thing I can do with my quirk. I can shoot lasers!"
The two parents looked to each other, it seems the origins for his Hero Name were no longer shrouded in mystery. Though Shinohara was excited, he knew better than to use his quirk at the food table unless he absolutely had too. His parents, especially Teki, were more than curious on how he figued that out whether it bee out of pride, curiosity, or of course the predominant and immediate concern over their child's safety. So she spoke.
"Well how did you figure that out sweetie?"
"Well, If I channel a buncha' energy from my core into my arms and out my hands really fast, it'll shoot out a laser! If I continue the process, then I can coninually shoot out a beam of energy instead of discharging it as random arcs of energy!"
They both were quite impressed. While he acted like a normal kid would most of the time, the Katsuryoku parents would often get random reminders of just how gifted he really was. Of how much of a Miracle he truly was. Though they were concerned parents first and foremost. Teki spoke once more.
"Does it hurt any when you do that? Does it feel unusual in any way, like your trying to force it?"
"Nope! In fact it feels really good and easy, perhaps its because I'm presenting an easier way for the energy to escape, or maybe-"
While Shinohara would continue theorizing out loud his parents shared a simultaneous sigh of relief, at least he wasn't using the freedom they gave him to hurt himself. Shinohara then concluded with a resounding proclamation.
"How about We go up to my room and I can show you guys what I can do!"
He rushed upstairs whence he came just a few minutes ago. He was about to show them the coolest thing ever! He had preform and do his very best. No, he had to better! Even though he wasn't going to U.A. and set up a childish rivalry with them in his head, he had to go Plus Ultra! Dad and Mom deserved their Miracle to do the best that he could, to become the best Hero he could be!
And so, even before his parent got to the room, he began charging up his epic laser beam.
He had a little mantra going in his head as well. Out the core, In the Arms, Out the hands. Wait a minute, he couldn't do that last part before Dad and Mom even showed up! So he temporarily revised it, Out the Core, In The Arms.
Out the Core, In The Arms.
Out the Core, In The Arms.
Shinohara closed his his eyes to concentrate on the building energy now stored within arms. His parents were walking up the stairs, in far less of a rush than he was.
Out the Core, In The Arms.
Out the Core, In The Arms.
Out the Core, In the Arms
"So what's that lazer you wanted to show us sweety"
Out the Core, In The Arms.
"Yeah, but make sure to be safe lil' Miracle."
Out the Cor-
WHEEERRREEEEooo
One always expects a giant laser to sound like a beat drop at a rave., A big satisfying bwoooom. But its far more terrifying than that.
Plasma doesn't doesnt make any sounds its just superheated energy and a lotta light, it doesn't really have the mass to create significant vibrations in the air. Well, that's not exactly true, but the activity it produces once a significant amount of plasma is introduced into an environment, such as in plasma waves in deep space, or a poor poor bastard who just incinerated his loving parents, is that of howling, nay screaming winds.
Its why when the initial shockwave of a nuclear bomb goes out, anyone that isn't deaf from it will just see a roiling mass of pure energy coming their way and sealing their deaths. Take away the boom from atomic fission, and all you get is just some really fucking hot air in terms of sounds.
Just a loud gust of wind. And all your hopes and dreams are gone. A lesson painfully learnt by one Shinohara Katsuryoku.
Shinohara was somewhat used to the flashes of light produced by his Quirk, though this much bigger instance combined with the sheer euphoria ironically going through his body at the moment, he was left disoriented and even a bit blind for a while.
Though he could definitely remember the last thing he heard. His parent's voices. His favorite and most beloved people in the whole wide world.
They've gotta be really proud of him after that one right? Afterall that was the biggest laser blast he'd ever seen! Let alone made.
His eyes started working a bit again.
Uh oh.
There was a big smoking hole where the rest of his and his parent's rooms used to be! Though Shinohara wasn't worried, they'd still be really proud of him. Though he squeaked a bit at the potential consequences for his actions. Little did he know. Oh so little he knew.
Huh.
Where were they?
"Dad?"
"Mom?"
Shinohara smelt an odd smell, it was that of cooked pork.
Though it smelt really weird and really burnt.
Dad must've burnt the Katsudon he was making for lunch, that's too bad. Though, last time he checked, there wasn't any pork in the fridge.
And so, he walked towards the door to go to the kitchen. He walking very slowly while looking down at the floor to make sure that he didn't trip on anything while his eyes were clearing up.
Clear up they did. And what those once gleaming eyes of innocence would see, would never be unseen. To this day, Shinohara debates with himself whether he would happier if he was permanently blind after that fateful event, if only as a small comfort.
Shinohara found his parents, what was left of them.
Smoldering before him were naught but the shins and ankles of whom he held dear.
Senzai was in his work boots, and Teki was in her fluffy blue slippers.
"DAD?!"
"MOM?!"
Any amount of Quirk-induced euphoria that was left was gone in an instant. Instead replaced by an overwhelming amount of fear, sadness, and grief.
Shinohara wasn't stupid. He was quite the opposite in fact, he a genius. He knew knew deep down what had just happened. What he had just done.
Though however much of a prodigy he was, Shinohara was still a child. He wasn't ready for this. For Loss. For despair. For Death. Nor was he supposed to be. Nor should anybody his age be. Yet while Death's cold hand is impartial, Life is the cruelest mistress everyone will ever have.
"DADA, MAMA PWEAS choke PWEASE COME BA-chokeAACK!"
Shinohara's rational mind knew it would never happen. That those feet that lay before him were all that were left. Though that part was currently a very tiny minority in an ocean of chaotic emotion.
"I'll NEVER choke USE MY QUIRK AGAIN PWEA-chokeSE COME BACK!"
What good would that do? The damage has been done. They're gone. Forever.
Shinohara's emotional side was so intense that it temporarily merged with his rational mind to desperately come up with a solution, an answer any answer for what had just happened asides from what could be deemed obvious.
He had it.
This was clearly a nightmare! All he had to do was pinch himself to wake up!
szzs
He blinked. He wasn't feeling any pain in his arm he was right! It WAS a nightmare! He could see Mom and Dad again!
So he looked towards his arms just to make sure he was pinching them as hard as he could, it was his ticket out of here after all!
"Where."
"Are"
"My."
"Arms."
He began hyperventilating, his heartrate skyrocketing as he could hear and feel it pounding through his body. Though not his arms.
conk
In the end, it was too much for Shinohara to handle. The death of his parents at his own hands. The loss of his arms. The knowledge that neither are ever coming back. It was too much.
Whether it was his brain preventing a potentially lethal panic attack or whether the mental burden overloaded his now permanently scarred mind was simply too great, Shinohara lay unconscious and passed out on the floor.
Shinohara awoke to the sound of police sirens and someone walking up the stairs with heavy footsteps.
There was a hope in the boys body for about half a second that it was his father, that the nightmare had indeed ended.
That was until he turned his head around, looking straight at his father's precious work boots.
He was about to start crying again when he saw an officer come into the room, assuming a dour expression at what he saw. The officer muttered to himself,
"What kinda fuckin' monster kills a a kid's parents and tears his fuckin' arms off?"
The fact that the officer immediately thought of at least 5 off the top of his head would make for an insightful commentary about Hero Society, but that's neither here nor there. Right now the officer had to talk to what he presumed to be only living witness of a villain attack. A little kid with no arms, and red streaks going down each side of his hair, one on each side.
"Hey there lil' man, could ya' tell me who you saw did this? You don't need to speak, but anything helps."
It really sucked that he had to be so manipulative to a clearly grieving kid, but if he could get a step closer to getting what he presumed the monster who did this off the streets. Though the child who's eyes now were a bright red in the cornea and stained with tears would prove that notion wrong.
"i-I-i-I di-di-did th-the-thi sis this."
Oh. It was one of those cases. Fuck. He wasn't good at handling kids anyways, let alone those who had just committed patricide.
"Ok. Can I get your name? I'm gonna try to get a hold of any of your other family ok?"
Now that he was fully awake, Shinohara had some vague teaching about never being rude to officers rumbling about in what was left of his mind, so he just answered as best he could.
"Shinohara Katsuryoku"
Luckily, that specific family happened to work with practically everyone in the area, including the officer. As much as it was a social faux pas to use a work number for reasons other than work, he somehow had a thought that it didn't really matter at the moment.
"Hello this is Kokan Katsuryoku of Katsuryuko Electrical, how can I help you today?"
"I'm sorry to use this number to contact you, but I'm officer--"
The officer then told the man through the phone what had happened. He was Shinohara's uncle, older brother to Senzai. One of the unlucky Katsuryoku men who couldn't have any Miracles.
He let out many sighs and deep breaths to concentrate through the phone, though the older man was handling it quite well all things considered. At least for now. Though with the information he just received his first and immediate priority was to drive over to Senzai's house and help out poor Shinohara.
Kokan picked up the now very light kid, taking deep breaths to concentrate solely on helping the now armless and traumatized former beacon of joy that now laid practically limp in his hands.
With hindsight and experience, this would serve as a valuable lesson to Shinohara on how to behave during high-stress heroics and rescues.
Kokan, however unprepared he was, took it upon himself to at least try to rehabilitate and raise Shinohara in his late brother's stead.
Though Kokan would never admit it to anyone, not even himself his entire life, but there was a deep, dark part of him that was grateful that he could now finally have an opportunity to have Miracle of his own. Though this was again relegated purely to the realm of thoughts that would keep him up at night.
Kokan would be much more restrictive on Quirk usage and experimentation ruling than Senzai and Teki, though Shinohara could thankfully recognize that it was out of concern for his safety rather than any sort of abuse and that he had to be more careful to say the very least.
This was ultimately somewhat fruitless, as Shinohara had both a physiological need to expel the energy he generated, along with a now very unfortunately ingrained psychological dependency on the euphoria generated by his Quirk as a stopgap to not further spiral into a deep depression he would never come out of.
Shinohara eventually figured out how to make energy construct-like limbs where his arms should be and how to shape them, though that was practically useless at the moment asides for having a convenient and constant way to get rid of at least some of his energy.
Obviously at some point Kokan bought his nephew prosthetic limbs, once he was deemed mentally stable enough to actually make use of it. Using his construct he could somewhat generate a tactile feeling through it, though this was incredibly basic and only limited to basic touch without roughness, softness, or temperature. It was something though.
One day, Shinohara had an idea. If he was gonna have to use his quirk, and didn't wanna waste his mind, what if he spent his time learning all about the things that his quirk could do and what it could be used for like Mom used to do. And so, he began his endless studies into the physics of Plasma, Lasers, Laser Engineering, Laser Chemistry, and pretty much everything he could about lasers.
A combination of operant conditioning via dopamine release, a re-ignition of childhood wonder, and a determination to genuinely better himself all made him obsessed with the very thing that had ruined his life forever.
That obsession carried him all the way to the gates of Shiketsu.
Quite frankly, Shinohara Katsuryoku was a complete and utter mental clusterfuck of insecurity, horrific trauma, a whole host of undiagnosed mental illnesses, and of a course heaping helping of heroic spirit barely scotch taping it all together.
The Charged-Up Hero, Miracle. He'll fit in just fine.
