INITIAL FLUFF
Dusty is a hardworking Pokémon if there ever was one, a being of single-minded determination and no shortage of energetic activity. Born and raised in this unusual world, Dusty is a native of the Bottomless Lake, growing up being chased around by the predators therein. Dusty watched as its relatives were picked off one by one, their natural psychic and aquatic gifts insufficient against the Lake's more toxic denizens.
Dusty itself only survived by learning to do something anathema to those of its breed... dousing its inner fire. With an inert crystal core, Dusty learned to hide, to run dark and disappear into the lake's gloom. And there the young Staryu thought it would remain, unnoticed and unbothered, feeding off drifting nutrients until its gemstone core joined the unknown numbers of its fallen predecessors, drifting down into the Lake's endless depths, never to be seen again.
But nothing is eternal.
Explorers came, plunging into the Lake in search of its treasures. And the wild Pokémon came, swarming them just as they'd swarmed Dusty's clan years ago. And Dusty watched, still and silent. More explorers ventured down, seeking things Dusty couldn't even imagine. The young Pokémon grew curious. These new beings felt so energetic, so unafraid, so... free. They represented a world beyond the darkened Lake. A world Dusty found itself longing to join. And so, when the third group of explorers again descended into his realm, armed to the teeth yet still no match for the lurking hordes below, Dusty made its move. The young Staryu couldn't fend off the predators, couldn't rally the troops with some grand speech, but... few in the lake knew the nooks and crannies within the muddy, rocky walls as Dusty did, perfect hiding places to disappear from predators. Fewer still knew the secret passages cracked into the stone by vaster waters, drained away countless years ago as the ocean dwindled into the Lake. And most importantly of all, Dusty knew which of those ancient voids led back to the surface, unseen and unheard by the feral masses.
Six Pokémon Dusty saved that day, and six Pokémon welcomed the youngster into their world. A world of sunlight, adventure, and action. The sun blistered Dusty's skin, yet the Staryu embraced it. It felt like seeing it's parents once more, feeling the warmth as if it were their glowing gemstone cores. Unusually for a water type, Dusty embraced the land, symbolically rejecting the Lake and its waters. The Staryu floated back and forth, gathering Berries, softening the soil with blasts of water, and using its sharp, pointed arms to rip and till the damp earth.
It was here that Dusty got its new name, for no one could really pronounce the Staryu's mother tongue. Dusty was perpetually covered in dried soil and earth leftover from digging, forever watering its growing crops of Berries and other food. A half remembered thought from its parents, or perhaps some ancestral genetic memory of regeneration, led Dusty to a supreme breakthrough. The healing power of Lum Berries, melded with the restorative powers of Leppas, fermented properly in pure water would summon the concoction known as Elixir.
In this way, Dusty paid for its place in the village. It seemed to care little for financial restitution or compensation, freely giving away whatever excess the Staryu didn't personally need. The villagers did notice that Dusty was an absolute fiend for shiny things, particularly gemstones of any type. These they brought to the young Pokémon, and were amply compensated for their troubles.
No one knew exactly why Dusty slept surrounded by these random rocks, piled high on the floor around its bed, dangling from threads to sparkle in the sunlight, or even embedded in the clay walls of Dusty's hand-built house. But at the right time of day, at the right angle, they almost seemed to glow in sync with Dusty's still-dimmed crystal core, surrounding the lonely Staryu in soft, warm rays of color.
As Dusty's gotten older, it finds itself lingering more and more at the Lake's shore, staring into the deadly waters. Dusty knows it is weak, despite having trained its hardest, despite having swapped valuable Elixirs for useful memory chips, despite being provisioned exceptionally well. Dusty needs more. Its ancestors call to the Staryu, singing from the inky blackness of both space and sea alike. Dusty knows what is needed, but not what to do.
A stone unlike any other is down there, somewhere in the Lake. A stone of perfect azure hue and phenomenal evolutionary power, hidden in the muck and mire. A ritual to pass, to become something more. To achieve power undreamt of by the little yellow star.
And lately Dusty has heard drifting echoes along the Lake's edge, emanating from far, far deeper than Dusty ever dared go. Not every song was snuffed in childhood. Not every core went dark. The most valuable gemstones of all. There ARE others.
Dusty has never truly embraced teamwork, or joined expeditions personally. All that the Staryu has, it has labored to earn by itself. But this challenge is beyond any one Pokémon, and for the first time, Dusty needs...
Friends.
