There haven’t been any attempts to make a proper solo RPG system tailor-made for AI, so here’s my shot at it. Just as a warning ahead of time I have severe ADHD so I struggle with maintaining focus on large scale projects, so don’t be surprised if I abandon this a few times throughout its life cycle. I don’t wanna have to write a 10k manual for the RPG before Anons can use it; I’d rather roll out the system in bite-sized portions and experiment with mechanics from various angles before finalizing anything. That being said, here’s the extremely barebones framework of a solo RPG for NAI, which I’ll be dubbing NAICE (NAI with dice) for now.

Basic Concept

The foundational idea behind this solo RPG system is having rolls influence how you word your TA actions. Later on, this might not be all there is to the system, but for now that’s the basic concept behind it.

Whenever you are to take an action in the narrative that has some non-trivial chance of failure, scope out the difficulty of the challenge based on your system’s guidelines, and roll for the skill associated with that action and then word your TA action based on the roll outcome.

The difficulty of the roll is entirely up to you but try to be fair so you can actually have fun with it.

Rolling System

For now you can use whatever TTRPG system you want that’s skill-based (like FATE). Ideally I’d like to develop one to use 2d6 as that’s the most accessible yet robust combination of dice I can think of. If you don’t have a TTRPG system decided, I’ll be using the FATE skills system for the demos so you might want to use that as well .If you’re using FATE, don’t bother with aspects or any of that extra stuff; just the skills.

Examples

We’ll be using the FATE system for these examples. You can read about it here.

E.g. Let’s say in your adventure you’re trying to rob a well-guarded mansion and the AI describes the mansion as being packed with guards. In that case, it should be a fairly difficult roll. Determine the difficulty of sneaking past the guards to the front entrance based on your system first. For fate, this might be a +3 difficulty challenge. Then, roll against that difficulty using your dice.

Example 1:

Difficulty: +3
Relevant skill: +2
Fate roll: +2
Outcome: +4

Since this is a success, you’d want to word your TA action something along the lines of this.

You silently manage to sneak past the guards to the front door of the mansion.

Example 2:

Example 1:

Difficulty: +3
Relevant skill: +2
Fate roll: -1
Outcome: +1

Since this is a failure, you’d want to word your TA action something along the lines of this.

You try to sneak past the guards, but one of them spots you from a distance.

For failures, you do not need outcomes that are so extreme that they lead you to completely failing what you’re trying to do. You can have a gap in between completely failing the task, like this.

You try to sneak past the guards, but one of them almost notices you, forcing you to hide in a bush.
