charles is like a very complex character by himself, in heavens gate where it focus on him and vincent (also on anri but she doesnt get enough focus) it shows his progress with opening himself to people first with anri and then with vincent who he swears he hates through the almost whole game but i dont think charles ever hated vincent in reality like at the start he thinks vincent is so perfect, a guy that gets along with everyone and gets good grades and he says he hates vincent because of that but its obvious that hes only jealous because these things are things he struggle with like hes not great at talking with people and also not the greatest with school this also plays a important role into their relationship since charles always sees vincent as someone so perfect hes almost like a god to him but obviously vincent is just another normal human being just like charles but that isnt something charles thinks its true so it affects their relationship as friends, charles always tried to avoid vincent or express hatred towards him until he actually got the courage to talk to him, usually they just try to talk about some topic like writing and politics (mostly because these are things vincent is interested in) but its not anything that makes their friendship an actual close friendship because charles actually knowns nothing about vincent but something he knows is that vincent is fake, like he holds a fake persona to everyone and charles noticed that :3 also vincent helped create a online cult which charles learned about cuz it was making people kts and when he discovered vincent created it he was like "well so what if hes a cult leader who cares" because after all vincent was like a god already. like the whole game it shows charles having this god view upon vincent that the game shows you its fake and charles thinks hes helping vincent but hes just creating a different fake view on vincent just like everyone else does, he keeps doing this until the end of hg
and like at the end of heavens gate vincent reveals he has tried to kill himself but it didnt work and when charles tells vincent about how he hates that vincent is always smiling and being like the fake view he thinks vincent is like, vincent gives charles a reality check and tells him to stop forcing a fake view onto him and says he will never be like that and never was and basically he disagrees with charles as a whole because obviously thats not how vincent is and charles knows nothing about him also this all causes charles to breakdown and vincent is just like, telling him to give up on this view now that they're graduating and charles is like not disappointed but you know hes like. going craycray
