What is DID / OSDD / UDD?

DID (dissociative identity disorder)

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is the disorder that was previously recognized as multiple personality disorder. It’s characterized by the presence of two or more dissociated self states, known as alters, that have the ability to take executive control and are associated with some degree of inter-identity amnesia. DID is caused by chronic childhood trauma and is highly associated with posttraumatic stress disorder.

DID is the result of repeated/long-term childhood trauma, that is often combined with disorganized attachment or other attachment disturbances. DID cannot form after ages 6-9 because individuals older than these ages have an integrated self identity and history. Trauma later in life can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder or complex posttraumatic stress disorder, other dissociative disorders including other specified dissociative disorder, somatic symptom disorders, or possibly borderline personality disorder, but DID requires an unintegrated mind to form.

OSDD

Other specified dissociative disorder is a category used for those that are clearly dissociative in nature but that don't meet the diagnostic criteria for another dissociative disorder. This category is used when it is known that another dissociative disorder is not present and what the symptoms are. OSDD is not developed in the same way DID is, many people who are traumatised later in life can develop OSDD

UDD

UDD is a diagnosis usually made when there is no time or opportunity for a more specific diagnosis to be made. This can be if someone shows disassociative symptoms but cannot be diagnosed for any specific reason.
