The Nations of Warung Kopi

Image description
100 years ago, the lands of Warung Kopi were inhabited by one people, the Nijinesi. The old Kingdom of Dilupakan used to be relatively powerful but experience a decline that lasted 500 years and ended with the Kingdom's collapse alongside that of the Kingdom of Mujigae in 1045 VTE due to SEA peoples from Indeia and Aliviria. As with Mujigae, the Empire of Nijisanji intervened and saved the Kingdom.

Even though they lost much land, ten years after the invasion, the three states united into a confederation known as the Confederation of Warung Kopi in 1056 VTE. This union was peaceful and a good one, as the new populace found much in common with each other and in the years just prior to the Kobonigger Invasion, it appeared as if Dilupakan could declare itself independent of the far away Empire that neglected it. Unfortunately, the Koboniggers ruined this with their invasion and the union was no more. Warung Kopi ceased to exist as a union 2years after the invasion in 1124.

(Former) Kingdom of Dilupakan

Status

The Kingdom, the oldest of in the lands, nearly was annihilated after the Kobonigger invasion and only saved by their hated masters. Without stable leadership, the Kingdom has been reestablished under direct Shogunate rule as a "Military Protectorate" for now since all of the Royal Family was killed.

With many of its old cities in ruins, the realm has had to found new cities in the region, with all of its cities besides that of Alstroemeria being little more than enclosed palisades with buildings popping up in them. The Shogunate has started to invest money into improving this shattered and barren realm, with the stated aim of reconstituting the domain as a self-governing entity within 15 years being made by the current Viceroy.

The new capital of Macchia, named after the destroyed old capital is the center of the Protectorate and from which the Viceroy, Adelbert van Zevenbergen, conducts business. As with most of the new cities, it is little more than a Military encampment that is being developed slowly into a city over time.

Economy

The realm's economy is in total shit and requires massive amounts of investment to get it up and ready to be used. The problem that the realm experienced in the aftermath of the invasion, beyond what has already been mentioned, is that the region that they are currently in has been mostly wild wilderness and inhabited for centuries. Aside from Dragoons building castles in the north of the realm a century before that is now abandoned and attempting some logging operations in the same region, most of the region has been untouched. It is one of the ulterior motives as to why the Empire of Nijisanji is willing to invest so much in the realm, as the untapped riches of the region could bring vast wealth in the future.

Primary

Food production has always been a problem in Warung Kopi, and it has taken the use of chuubanite in the past to get a stable agricultural economy for the relatively small population of the realm. Now with reduced land, the emphasis on concentrating chuubanite into "improving the land and the crops" is essential. Special forms of Wheat and Potatoes are grown along the Amicia River, from which the sleepy Penguin loving goddess' magic plays a crucial role in their growth. Penguins themselves are sacred animals as they are seen as the reason why the crops and other goods can even be exploited. Fishing, however, is the heart of the Economy thanks to the worshippers of Bonnivier Pranaja. Bobon's reputation as a fisherman God has translated into massive hauls of fish for the realm, both now and in the presence. Fish sustain the Kingdom more than any other crops and the wide variety of Fish is legendary, a special trait of the realm. The blessed Mitaka Solutions Meat company also is a major part of feeding the Kingdom, as Taka Radjiman himself blesses the company and its products. Hunting is also part of the food industry but is not considered to be a sustainable means long term.

Logging is an important part of the economy and one of the parts that Nijisanji is the most interested in. Van Zevenbergen himself believes that the future of the realm is based on mining ventures and logging operations and the latter is where he is the most focused now. The Boreal forests that dominate the land contain White and Black Spruces, Balsam Firs, Larches, pines, aspens, birches, Conifers and popular trees. Many of these trees are valuable for the Imperial navy but also for the settlements that are popping up in this desolate wasteland. The Lumber Industry is seeing massive growth and will have a long future within the Realm.

Mining is a part of the economy with growing significance. Warung Kopi as a whole is mineral rich and has seen a gold rush in the past in parts of it. It was part of the reason why Selenium during the reign of Magnus VII conquered the northern parts of the region. While Magnus's control ended up being temporary with the fall of his Kingdom to Pomerlane resulting much of the land being returned, the land to this day is still relatively untouched in terms of its minerals as a whole. When it comes to the current rump state, prospecting has resulted in the finding of extensive deposits Iron, Anthracite and Bituminous Coal, Copper, Nickel, Platinum and Tungsten, with minor deposits of Cobalt, Lead, Zinc, Gold, Silver, Titanium, Mercury and Manganese. There is a great amount of danger in mining, with most of these minerals having to be extracted with deep shaft mines. These mines are extremely dangerous, and the Empire has had to bring in steam engines to make the best use of these mines. Wagonways are extremely important and child labor is crucial to some of the narrower shafts.

Whaling is also an extremely important part of the economy, being on the most already established already. Whale oil, Blubber, and other whale products bring one of the more stable and developed forms of wealth into the realm.

Secondary

The Manufacturing sector is rather undeveloped but the plans to develop it greatly is part of the 5-year plan of Nijisanji. Some local steel mills have been set up already but most of the secondary sector is concentrated in the artisans and skilled laborers, both local and imported. They serve as the main local producer of manufactured goods and are crucial for the success of the 5-year plan; even if the end result may be their own disenfranchisement as they provide what they can for the locals so that imports can be reduced as much as possible.

Tertiary

A rather nonexistent part of the economy, the only Bankers that exist are those from the K.A.G. given that any local banks were destroyed by Koboniggers or driven out of business by the predators in the K.A.G. in the aftermath. Merchants are rather scarce and most of the merchants are foreigners in some form.

Military

Aside from local militias and paramilitary forces that are raised to protect localities, the realm has no standing army anymore. All military operations, fortifications, standing army forces, etc. are from the Empire. To this end, the Empire has done a marvelous job in saving the state by not only stopping the Koboniggers but pushing them back somewhat and fortifying the border rather well. The Empire has committed 40,000 mercenaries from Pomerania, Selenium, Lucania and Eliria for its purposes; knowing that the warlike people of Ninisani are better suited for the fight than the men from the Empire itself. Indeed, it comes as no surprise that the Viceroy himself is a Pomeranian, who are known for their brutal efficiency as leaders.

The navy, like the army, is nonexistent and naval traffic is usually confined locally because of the pirate havens nearby and the Imperial Navy only allocating a moderate squadron to protect local trade. Most trade comes by land or by seas from Mujigae, with minor trade agreements with Selenium and the Pertunjukanesi being established.

Culture

Nijinesi culture and its people are known for their hardiness, resilience and ability to adapt to the changing times. It has allowed them on numerous times recover after seemingly being pushed into destruction, and the mere fact that Dilupakan has survived two separate invasions and mass displacement is a testament to their spirit. Nijinesi are not warlike people by nature, but out of the situation they have been put in. Indeed, one of the reasons that Warung Kopi was a success was the willingness and openness of the Nijinesi to cooperate with the invaders and form agreements with them when it became apparent that these people were not savages and shared much in common with them. In a land as cold, desolate, and dangerous as Warung Kopi; it is no surprise that its most native population are like this.

The worship of the Nijinesi Pantheon is an important aspect of society, as the superstitious Nijinesi believe that their times of troubles have come from the wrath of their gods. In this respect, the Nijinesi do not have factionalism in their religion but rather that each of the Divines is equal and serve their own purposes; thus, all being worshipped. Their recovery has been attributed to the Divines moreso than their masters in fact. But like many in the Greater Anykarian Pantheon, the Divines from Anykaria, Mujigae and Ninisani are also tolerate and many of them are also worshipped. The Chaotic Neko, Tamaki Fumino, is particularly loved for the tales of her and Taka Radjiman in the mythos.

The Four Kingdoms of Pertunjukan

Background

The Pertunjukanesi were the most powerful group of the SEA peoples that arrived in Warung Kopi in 1045. Coming from the Alivirian Continent, due to overcrowding at home and persecution, the sheer number of them overwhelmed the Kingdom of Dilupakan in the desolate central part of the old Kingdom and effectively forced them to give up their claims on the east and center alone. While Nijisanji saved the Kingdom, the reality was that once the Pertunjukanesi were settled in, they turned out to be quite friendly to the Nijiinesi people.

Before the Kobo invasion, Pertunjukan Empire was the most powerful state in the confederation but the invasion itself would fracture the state as a whole into 4 separate Kingdoms, based largely on their affinity with their Goddesses. The Kingdom of Ayunda benefit the most from this, as the Warsunesi did not lose much land at all. The former Kingdoms of Tungku and Menempa were forced to unify into one state, the Kingdom of Tungkumenempa,in the Northwest, largely on the old lands of the Tungku Kingdom. Likewise, the Kingdoms of Belati and Zombi were forced to merge into the Kingdom of Belatiapi in the Northeast. The former Emperors of the Bulan Dynasty be reduced to the capital region and the Princedom of Airani stayed loyal to the old Emperor. The current Emperor, Anusapati, still maintains that he rules over all of his former Empire, but his claims of grandeur are useless, as the Tungkumenempa and Belatiapi Kingdoms pay lip service to him while the Warsunesi refuse outright.

The chaos of trying to resettle large groups of people and landgrabs by the Warsunesi have the former Empire in disarray, and they can count their lucky stars that the Kobonesi have run out of steam in their conquest.

Bulan Empire

Status

The Bulani Empire was the hardest hit of the four states, losing most of its crown land along the Moona River and along the Southern Coast. It has lost pretty much all of its power to other petty breakaway states and has lost lands to the Warsunesi along the Ayunda River. Many migrants have poured into their lands searching for new opportunies and many died as a result of the Kobonesi.

Economy

The Empire's economy is in dire straits, with substantial loss of their tax base and runaway inflation causing the emperor great issues dealing with the current problems he faces.

It is fortunate however that the Moona River valley is a fertile ground for crop growth in the desolate lands. Moona herself was said to have blessed region with its odd temperatures cycles that allow wheat, barley and potatoes to be grown, along with other vegetables. The food grown here is crucial for the survival of the Kingdoms of Tungkemenempa and Belatiapi, given their lack of true ability to farm properly. However, what the Empire has in food it lacks in raw materials, thus the relationship between the Empire and the two aforementioned Kingdoms is one of mutual benefit. This is likely the reason why these states pay the emperor lip service.

The pelt trade is one of the few ways the Empire makes profit, along with the limited extraction of gemstones from the mines near Soreang.

All in all, major economic reforms must be undertaken for the Empire's survival. The public works projects and objects of Imperial Splendour may have to fall into decay or in the latters case, sold.

Military

The Empire's professional army was crushed at the Battle of Lamongan in 1122 by the Kobonesi, effectively forcing the Empire to rely on diplomacy and feudal levies to survive. It is also fortunate that the region around the capital of Purabaya was well fortified prior to the invasion. For the army to be fix however, the economy must be first.

Culture

Prior to the invasion, the Empire was a hub of artistic and culture in the region. Purabaya is a beautfiul city with countless pieces of art and architecture dedicated to the Goddess Moona. Likewise, the Principality of Airani is a hub of artists within the former Empire. As such, the traditions still remain despite the inability to really pay for new works.

The worship of Moona and Iofi is the popular religion of the rump state, with the internal schisms over the other divines resulting in them becoming minor deities in the realm.

Kingdom of Tungkumenempa

Status

The former Kingdoms used to be close allies with the Kobonesi in the former Empire until the Great Horde arrived and turned on them. As such, the former Kingdom of Menempa was practically destroyed and her people displaced to their close friends in Tungku. As a result of the refugees, Tungku was unable to maintain its own population and starvation claimed the lives of many along with an outbreak of smallpox. As a result, the new Kingdom of Tungkumenempa is rather depopulated. The actions of the Warsuners claiming some of the better farmland in the Kingdom certainly didn't help either and as such, the Kingdom relies on others for its survival

Economy

While the local food production is rather poor, being limited largely to hunting and gathering, the import of food from the Empire has certainly provided at last stability to the realm. This helps as the realm has a notably rich minerals, including Iron, Anthracite and Bituminous Coal, Gold, Silver, Jade, Tasmanite, Aluminium, and Rubies. Mining has always been a key part the former Kingdom of Tungku and the world renown blacksmiths of Menemempa have really solidified their regional control on the production of fine tools, weapons, armor and other metal products. Some of the most advanced metallurgy is found within the secrets of the Menempasi people.

Logging is also important in the region as are the quarries.

Military

The combined armies of the two former Kingdoms, while not able to match the Warsunesi, are formidable in their own right thanks the extremely high-quality steel they are made from. They also have one of the greater intelligence agencies in the world V7, which not only helps the Kingdom out but has pledged to all the other Kingdoms their assistance.

Culture

Finely produced Jewelry and well-crafted metal objects are very culturally significant to the Kingdom. Ornate Swords, Armor, and other objects are prized possessions for every noble.

The Worship of the Two Goddess, Zeta and Kaela, is the most common form of worship in the Kingdom.

Kingdom of Belaiapi

Status

Hard hit by the Kobonesi, this Kingdom was a state of anarchy as a result of both of its Kings being killed in battle and the forced union for survival. The new King, Sanjaya, worked hard to unite these people into one people and early on it is showing its benefits. The lands of the Kingdom are sparse, but it is their lack of development that Belatisi and the Zombisi look to rebound in.

Economy

Given the regions lack of food as said before, the Kingdom relies on the Empire for its food. In exchange, it provides the much-needed wood and other natural resources to the Empire.

Logging is the most important industry in the realm, but there are also some copper, iron and coal deposits that are also exploited. the Belatisi are famed for their finely crafted daggers and swords, which are on part with that of the Menempasi and are considered finer by others.

Military

Their army, like the Imperial Army, was crushed at Lamongan and they have had to resort to asymmetrical warfare to survive, with hit and run tactics and the use of assassins to kill Kobonesi Commanders. This has been effective in the short term but it is not sustainable long term, and their King realizes this and has started to try to rebuild the army in some way.

Culture

The Cult of the Undead and the Cult of the Dagger are popular religious festivals within the realm. Like their other Pertunjukan comrades, their focus is upon the two Goddess significant to their own people.

Kingdom of Ayunda

Status

Probably the most formidable of the Pertunjukanesi are the Warsunesi. These people are formidable fighters that have repelled all Kobonesi attacks and have taken land from their neighbors. They are not well received by the other Pertunjukanesi, who see them as opportunists, but the fact that their state is the most stable speaks volumes about their society.

Economy

The Warsunesi, by their conquests, have obtained an effective autarky. They have good fertile land that has been blessed by Ayunda in the Ayunda River Valley; have solid iron, coal, copper, and tin deposits in the north of their state; and have a stable logging sector as well.

Being the most developed of the other states, they also have a stable secondary sector that funds their war machine quite well and their cultural ethos against excess is most vital to their success.

Kingdom of Kebebasan

Status

Never holding much land to begin with and being the clear third partner in the Union, the Kebebasani lost the most and have been pushed all the way back to a region between the Harimau and Naga Rivers. However, this has turned out to be a blessing for the Kebebasani Kingdom as this region is not only highly defensible, but has given them a region that is away from the attention of the Koboniggers due to its isolation.

Economy

The economy of this region is mostly based on farming and fishing, with mining and logging also playing minor roles in the region. The ground between the two rivers is rather fertile and oddly warm compared to the rest of Warung Kopi. This has resulted in the Kebebasani being able to consolidate and start to grow internally quite effectively.

Mining operations are largely for stone, as the minerals of this region were depleted long ago and Logging is often done across the Naga river in the wild lands of the Rosebutas.

Military

The Military of the Kingdom is mostly volunteers that are called on when a threat is present. As most of the advanced arms must be imported, this has caused the Kingdom to rely on more archaic weapons like Pikes and Bows. The strong fortifications dug along the Harimau river, however, seem to be more than strong enough for the Kingdom to survive an attack from the Koboniggers.

Culture

These people have an indepedant spirt, indeed this is one of the greatest strengths and weaknesses. As a weakness, it divided the Kingdom and lead to its collaspe quite easily. But the desire for independence has led the many peoples that call themselves Kebebasani to band together in their current land and they will fight harder than anyone to maintain this little home they have.

Their pantheon is diverse, having thousands of deities in it but only a few dozen are popular.

Sultanate of Koboniggera

The Sultanate is the newest state of Warung Kopi, the largest and the strongest but yet little actual information exists about it. What is known is that the former Kingdom of Kobo invited these niggers to invade Warung Kopi and they gladly accepted.

Military

The Military of the Kobonesi, while being large, is relatively undisciplined and tribal in nature. Indeed, units are divided into tribal distinctions themselves, although we have yet to figure out what these distincitions are.

Economy

As limited as our knowledge is of these people, we scarcly know anything of their economy. There is no recorded capital or any cities for that matter. But in someway, the Kobonesi war machine continues to thrive and grow seemingly every day.

Culture

There is little known about their culture beyond the fact that they are monotheist for Kobo, very tribal, very warlike and like to eat excrement
