Otto Bramwell

Name: Otto "Bram" Bramwell
Family: Muggleborn

Born to a muggle family, he is a late start student to Hogwarts. His entire neighbourhood was shrouded by a powerful anti-divination charm and only brought down by aurors after the taken down after the group of dark wizards who had erected it were captured. It was only a day or so later that he was detected for illegal underage use of magic. When the ministry investigated it was found that for some years he had been developing an instinctual use for magic but had received no formal training. After a quick consultation with his parents, an ad-hoc bridging course was developed for Otto, so that he could join next Septemeber's joining ceremony directly as a 3rd year. He managed to pass the bridging course AND do surprisingly well on his end of year exams. As of now, he is a 5th year much more comfortable within the Wizarding world as a 17 year old than he was as a wide eyed (and scared) 14 year old.

Wand: Hollywood with a Red-oak core, of average length (11") and very flexible.

A cheap wand that quickly identified its owner and literally flew from the shelf when he entered the store.

House:

Hufflepuff

Magical Talent: Charms, Charms: Physical, DADA: Offence, and Occlumency. Black thumb & Twitchy.

Coming from a muggle life Otto has ravenously learnt as much as he can about the magical world and has loved learning ways to interact with the world through magical means. Unfortunately even after a few years he still largely struggled with magical flora and fauna, his muggle life not preparing him for man-eating flowers or three-headed dogs.

Spells & Potions: Spell Creation (Celeritas), Wandless Spells

While Otto isn't an outright genius like many fellow students, he has largely devoted himself to the creation and mastery of his own spell. Something that had begun before he even knew magic was a real thing. His dedication to Celeritas is best summized by the addage: fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times

Signature Spells

Celeritas: Developed as an inversion of Arresto-Momentum, Celeritas dramatically increases the speed of whatever it is cast upon. Otto casts this on himself to gain immense bursts of speed.
Apparition: Stealthy, Piercing, Powerful, Homing

Perks: Brave, Perceptive, Reflexes, Hardworking, Schemes

A hardworking, athletic, and quick-witted student. Otto is an archetypal example of street-smarts compared to academic intelligence, less skilled in traditional long-term or complex planning, but excellent at immediate tactical problem solving, thriving in chaos.

Pet: Owl (Thimble), Ghost (Ignatius Plunkett or Ink-Stained Iggy)

Ignatius Plunkett during his life was a world renowned researcher and magical theorist, considered in life by many to be exotic at best and insane at worst, even his biggest critics applauded his genius. Ink-Stained Iggy, haunts Hogwarts Library mumbling mostly to himself, half-baked theories or critiquing the writings of other lesser minds.
For some reason (quite unexplained) Ink-Stained Iggy has taken a strange liking to Otto, and while he is still largely nonsensical in his ramblings, has offered significant insights and advice to the young wizard becoming his ad-hoc mentor.

School Life

Trouble Making, Detention

Joining the school late due to his unique circumstances and being raised in quite a rough neighbourhood, Otto did not fit smoothly into the Hogwarts lifestyle. Otto especially in his first year, would often find himself in fights with other students. While he was far from an ideal duelist, what he lacked in magical prowess he has more than made up for with brawling skill. More than one Pureblood bully earning themselves a glasgow kiss, something all of them seem completely unprepared for. In line with that, Otto is quite familiar with the detention hall and has plenty of time to catch up on his studies.

Electives

Muggle Studies, Study of Ancient Runes

Study of Ancient Runes was suggested to Otto by Iggy, while Muggle Studies was taken simply for an easy grade having spent most his life as a muggle.

Favourite Food:

Grumblecrackers - to the point he almost always has a packet on him to chew on.

Family:

All Muggles. He has a lovely father who is a retired boxer and now works as a boxing coach and co-owns a gym. His mother is an accountant. His elder (though still littler) sister is a university student, and he has a little sister and two little brothers. Prior to learning magic he was somewhat of a delinquent and would frequently get into fights, especially if he thought people were being mean to his family. Even after mellowing out he remains protective, just less prone to outbursts.

Amalia

A peculiar girl. She seems more comfortable with animals than she does people, which I can understand pets are cool. Then again she opted in to Care of Magical Creatures which is a step too far if you ask me. I've seen her sneaking around the grounds when she should be in class a few times but she seems to be able to avoid detention. Is she just not getting caught or do the teachers cut her slack?

Merlin

This dude has a phoenix, how freaking cool. I don't know much about him but he seems popular enough. I've never heard anything bad about him anyway.

Frank Lee

Iggy says he is a prodigy of Transfiguration, a once in a life-time example. Well actually Iggy said he blinks out buttercakes and the world sneezes in his presence, but I know what he means. I've heard he has a way to get around Hogwarts that is without equal, well lets let them keep thinking that.

Olivander said my wand's twin was with a Gryffindor student and while his is a little bit longer I think its him.

Yukiri Sukasuka

This girl is cool as hell, have you seen her sword? Its like SHING, SWISH, SWOOSH. And she is so pretty too. Not that I am interested in her or anything. I heard she is fantastic in the dueling club. I wonder if she plays Quidditch. She does? Awesome.

Oliver Ollivander

He reminds me of my little brother, always listening to his MP3 player and he uses Accio even more than I do, which I've got to say is really something. I will admit I have asked him for help with charms on more than one occasion. He always groans but has never turned me down so he is pretty cool. My little edge-lord.

Ciaran Whitehorn

I'll always be thankful that he was so nice to me when I first joined Hufflepuff and for introducing me to Quidditch. He is destined for greatness on the pitch, that said he has terrible naming sense. Who names a cat owl and an owl cat. Wizards are just weird like that I guess. Still a very good friend.

Oaklynn Barlowe

Oaklynn is a strange one to be sure, but I like her. She is as smart as my big sister. She is so smart and kind. I definitely would have failed my last potions test if not for her help studying.

Arthur Abbott

A little squirt who needs a good slap upside the head.

Mythran Stonework

She seems cool enough, she is a hell of a beater. Absolutely sent that quaffle to a different dimension. There aren't many witches or wizard who I think can handle themselves in a real fight, but she gives me the vibe that she can handle herself fine.

Olympia Stalwart

The Wizarding world is so crazy. This girl is actually made of like magical paper. Thats crazy. I haven't met her but Iggy really likes her. There has been a dozen or more times where he will be muttering something about her. He seems more coherent when she is around as well, though neither of us know why.

Alric Yaxley

This dude is so smooth. Honestly I wish I had the words this guy does, he seems to have it all together. He never gets into stupid fights. Probably someone I should try to befriend, I could learn a lot from him.

Minagi Sukasuka

She gave me a free hair cut once. It was awesome, I'd been wanting one for a while but just never got around to finding the time. I tried to pay her back when I could afford it but she didn't accept, so I still owe her one. Definitely an odd-ball but so are most witches so she is probably normal, its hard to tell. I should hit her up for another haircut come to think of it.

Tina Crouch

She is so massive its almost intimidating. One of the few people in the school I'd be concerned about throwing down with. She eats as much as I do, which I respect. And she is a hell of a beater, which I also respect. Overall a cool chick.

Thomas P Hippo

A cool guy, we have hung out in detention a few times. Both of us are late starters but don't let that fool you he is wicked smart. One time he was getting picked on by some Slytherin losers and I butted in. Needless to say we wrecked them. Always fun to go exploring with. Fun Guy/10

Tony Ricketts

Is this guy for real? Does the school just train dark wizards. I swear one time I saw a pistol on him. I told the teachers but they didn't seem to care. Seems wild to me but okay, another wizarding world culture clash thing I guess.

Veronica Pressfield

A complete babe and probably top of every class, its a pity she is a Slytherin. She gives off an awful vibe, which is really something given how gorgeous she is.

Zachary Oceanborough

Can't say I have ever seen him around. Im sure he is a nice enough kid.

Lennox Guant

This guy creeps me out s much as Tony. This whole house is just full of whackjobs. He seems to be as crazy as Iggy, and I have seen Gaunt trying to talk to Iggy a few times in the library though its hard to determine if he talks back or is just ranting to himself.

Tibbits

This guy invited me to some group club, the society of warfare elves or something. Its still weird to me that elves are real, and that they are serfs? or maybe slaves? Im not sure, I do know he holds rallies during the Quidditch matches but hey, you do you.

Professors

Professor Nicholas Firethorn

No-one sane chooses to deal with magical creatures, so what does that tell you about someone who makes it their career? And a Slytherin as well? Yeah he is exactly the piece of work you expect. He even volunteers to supervise detention because he has nothing better to do. God he is the worst. The only good thing about him is that face he makes when we thrash Slytherin in Quidditch.

Professor Marvin

This guy drains the very happiness out of everyone around him and somehow is still a better detention teacher than Firethorn. Let that sink in.

Professor Minrathous Cicero

Prof is a real G. He helped me with all the paperwork that was required to get Celeritas authorised and signed off on. He even helped me develope Celeritas Maxima, though it is not quite ready for proper use. Hopefully I will have time over the break to really knuckle down and work on it properly.

Professor Simon Stan

Too busy dreaming of the future for my liking but I guess that comes with the job. He did a demonstration once for dueling class where he showed off his spell mora, where he precast a bunch of stuff then started the duel and it all went off. He chuckled and said it was borderline cheating. I dont know what world this guy is living in, that's just straight cheating. Wizards, and especially these divination types are so damn weird man.

Professor Dougal McCreedy

This guy is pretty cool. He cares abit too much about being neat and tidy but whatever, he takes the time to make sure you learn and never makes you feel dumb. Makes me feel bad I don't do better in his class to be honest.

Professor Chantelle Shafiq

Her accent makes it abit hard at times, but she is a decent enough teacher. Ancient Runes is normally a dry subject I hear, but when she teaches its always interesting. Leaves me alone for the most part while she focuses on her favourites.

Professor Henry Travers

I like his stories, and he is always very encouraging. I thought at first the old man would be a real stick in the mud, and in dueling club he seems to be, but in DADA he is much more open to some of my unorthodox ideas. I guess it makes sense why he doesn't let me do them in dueling club, the same way my dad wouldn't let someone try an armbar in the ring. Its less about real world and more about form. But still, it means the few times I attended the club I get smoked.

Professor Studios Gaunt

Seems to know damn near everything about herbology. Its bewildering how he seems to know the answer to questions before they are even asked. I've never seen him less than perfectly prepared for every class. Its a pity he became a Herbology professor, he clearly could have become the Charms professor.

Headmaster Dankinus Manastone

The only other person Iggy seems to speak to with any regularity. He seemed super weird at first, but having spent so much time with Iggy now he almost seems normal. I wonder if that means I am becoming weirder.

Is some sort of unknowing semi-magical creature, having accidentally and unknowingly siphoned off parts of the dark wizards ritual, which as super-charged him physically and empowered his innate magic.
Leans more into single spell aspect and having better "innate" magical proficiency but much less academic skill which needs to be overcome with hard work and tutelage.

what do your builds do in their spare time? Are they concocting any crazy potions or spells? Playing pranks on other students? Investigating the many secrets of Hogwarts?
And, say, what is your relationship with fellow students? We're especially curious to know about those outside your house.

Otto doesn't have an awful lot of 'spare' time. Especially in his first and second year he had to undergo after-lesson study to catch up to regular curriculum training. That said, he enjoys athletics of all sorts. So he could most easily be found either in the Library studying, or in the outer grounds running or shadow boxing. He has joined in a few times with other students adventures though he isn't really a ring leader in these events and is usually dragged in by coincidence or because Iggy provokes him to tag along. Aside from athletics and quidditch practice (thanks to Ciaran), Otto is trying to codify his unique spell Celeritas, having largely used it previously by instinct.

His relationship with students really varies person to person. He tends to look favourably on younger people, but has no tolerance for bullys or snooty people. From his initial reaction, he is growing to dislike Slytherins as a whole.

Do you have any notable family? If so, what's your relationship to and with them?

Yeah, Otto has a pretty big family. His dad is a retired boxing coach, now co-owner of a gym. His mother is an accountant. His elder sister is a university student, and he has a younger sister and younger brother. He is very close with his whole family, though all of them are proper muggles. Its almost like he is adopted or something. He is very protective of his siblings and reveres and loves his parents. He often chastises himself on their behalf when he is being lazy or loses his temper. He likes to talk about them a lot, but mostly to Iggy (especially in his first year when he was the most socially awkard).

If you're a student: have you got any plans for life after Hogwarts? If not, what do you miss from your time before enrolling?

No plans for after Hogwarts at this stage. Otto largely is looking for ways to make his families life better/easier with the use of magic since its just an incomprehensible difference to mundane living. As a long-shot dream he would love to be a professional athlete, but his parents don't want him to "all-in" on sports knowing how easy it is to have a single bad day and lose your career. What he misses the most from before enrolling is time at home with his family, and his "normal" friends. He has found that he has lost a lot of what he had in common with his friends, since they live now totally in different worlds.

What is your patronus

I'm not sure he knows the spell, but if he does and is able to manifest an animal it would be a dog. Something like a german shephard.

What's your character's thoughts on the Houses? Do they buy into the typical rivalries.

Otto has grown to dislike Slytherin, having few if any good interactions with any of their members. He dislikes Professor Firethorn (but begrudgingly admits he is right an awful lot, not that he would ever voice such thoughts). He doesn't dislike Ravenclaws at all but instead has a lot of respect for them, with many of his tutors being from Ravenclaw. He gets along well with Hufflepuffs and most Gryffindors, though in his early years did butt heads with some of the more outspoken Gryffindors.

https://desuarchive.org/tg/post/95796907
What is your build's combat style?

He has two different "styles". First is for duelling and is largely based on Professor Travers teaching. Its academic and is largely based around proper use of Protego, Expelliamus, and Stupify. It is largely a fencing sort of style where you strike, parry/block, strike. All while trying to read an opponent and find the right moment to strike with overwhelming force.

Otto's combat style is not at all suitable for the wizarding world and involves beating the ever loving shit out of people. Expelliamus? Nah, lets break their fingers or put them in an arm bar. You need words to cast a spell? Lets see you speak when you are holding a broken nose and are swallowing your own teeth. Against serious opponents this is only really achieved through surprise or overwhelming speed. Luckily for him, few if any Wizards expect such a mundane approach to fighting so are very much vulnerable to a punch to their throat. For those who are ready, he needs to use Celeritas to evade their spells and close the distance.

As he has matured and really developed his understanding of charms, his fighting style has only become more and more scrappy. Using wordless, wandless Accio/Depulso to pull and push enemies and well as objects to confuse and destabilize them. Mixing in concealment charms to make his opponents lose track of him, or blinding them with a sudden Lumas Maxima.

He has recently begun experimenting with the use of a targeted confundus that makes the victim unable to properly control their limbs (they move an arm instead of a leg for example). And weaponizing the Arresto Momentum against groups of fast moving targets.

Your build has just managed to get his/her hands on the Mirror of Erised. What does he/she see?

He is surrounded by his family, and has an absolutely beautiful girl standing by his side. He would be holding his N.E.W.T results which would be outstanding across the board.

https://desuarchive.org/tg/post/95819052
Muggle-borns (or half/pure-bloods who weren't certain): how did you get the news that you'd be attending Hogwarts? How did you react?

He received the news after Aurors came to his house and met with his parents. Due to the anti-detection ward that a group of dark wizards had established over the neighbourhood he wasn't detected in the usual manner and in the usual timeline. As such, when he was 'pinged' for illegal underage magic use and the matter was investigated, the authorities went directly to the parents and discussed the matter. They were convinced that it was in Ottos best interest to attend Hogwarts and to rapidly get control of his newly developing powers. He responded well initially, but did not welcome the idea of boarding school.

https://desuarchive.org/tg/post/95866884
Where does your character spend their holidays? What do they typically do on them?

He goes home to catch up his family, and he studies his catch-up materials. His family is very accommodating to his unique schooling requirements and his family will try to free up time to spend with him. His younger siblings don't know he goes to a magical school, but his elder sister is in the loop so she has become one of his closest confidantes (along with his parents). His younger sister forces him to play with her for at least a few days straight to "catch up" on all the play they missed out on while he is away.
