Bio and Stories
Bio
Already a gluttonous young man in his youth, where once Dao indulged in such flavors for joy, now he finds that he must consume whatever's available just to be able to satisfy the ever-gnawing hunger in his belly. Even worse, the strange composition of their current situation has left Dao's aura with a tantalizing taste, leading many to seek his flesh for consumption. Though he knows not how or why it ended up within him, he knows for sure that it is a punishment...but whether said punishment is for him or the spirit, neither truly knows.
Such is his voracious hunger that he will often take vicious bites out of his enemies during battle in order to sate it, feasting on their meat as he does so. While Dao knows that cooking a meal restores him far more than consuming flesh and spirit during battle, the spirit within cares not for such patience. As a result, he works as a Beast Hunter, where he can happily satisfy the spirit with their flesh. He even finds time to cook the great beasts, as he is fully aware that a cooked meal is far better than raw flesh when it comes to Aura Recovery.
Outside of his violent, hungry outbursts, Dao is a rather jovial man who loves the simpler things in life, and even has a special interest in cooking, which is what led him to the Hunter's Lodge in particular. Though he's been dealt with a rather sore lot in this life, he does truly believe that he has a way out, and if that doesn't work, then he doesn't believe that worrying about it will make it any easier...though he still does, as hard as he tries not to.
After all, with such a violent drive within him, Dao can only really do his best to sate the spirit's hunger whenever possible...deep within, however, he knows that he cannot live the carefree life he wants with the beast within. And so, he hopes to sate the devil's hunger someday. He hopes that by hunting the greatest prey, and providing the finest feast, he will be able to rid himself of the devil's appetite once and for all...
Relation Information
Beast Hunters
The Hunting Lodge
General
"A strange bunch, but one that I wouldn't be without if I could help it."
Being the only faction that encourages the kind of cooking he's been doing, as well as a source of strange, exotic foods, it's not hard to see why Dao finds the place to be a sort of home. Though he wishes to cook and eat the Last Dragon specifically to sate the malevolent guest in his stomach, he wants to make sure that the rest of the Lodge can have a taste of it too.
Kaine Tsukikage
"Were it not for the stories of the foods she made, I'm not sure I would have been able to continue on so easily."
Dao has great respect and admiration for the leader of the Hunter's Lodge. From being a rather prominent Beast Hunter in general, to being the person that inspired him to start cooking meals of the Beasts he's hunted, he has much to like about her. If there's one thing he could ask from her, it's to cook him a piece of the Last Dragon when he eventually gets to it.
John "Berserker" Thomas
"We are alike in many ways, and I cannot help but enjoy his presence just as much as I can grow tired of it."
There are many things that John and Dao share. The gifts of their Animal Blood, their sheer physical prowess, and even the unsettling nature of their selves...yet for all that they are the same, Dao feels jealous of John. While John too, has his own misgivings of his life, Dao can't help but feel that the smile John puts on is far brighter than his own. Still, he would make for a good hunting partner, and there is no doubt that Dao would stand by him as a friend when troubles arise.
Toshiko the Firefly
"I pray that her heart is tempered enough to brave the cruelty of the world someday. The light in her eyes may grow dim, but I pray she never loses it."
Dao thinks much of Toshiko, in only that he worries over her like one worries for a mischievous sibling. Though he knows that appearance does not beget age, especially in this world, he still cannot help but see the proud, talented shapeshifter as someone to fuss over. She, along with John, are rather fun to eat with and cook for, considering all three of them have such ravenous appetites.
Distorted Mirage
"A strange, ominous name, and a fantastic fighting style...there's much to learn from this one, to be sure!"
Dao is, unfortunately, very curious about Mirage. Though he is often mesmerized by the way she fights, due to the manner in which she uses Aura, he is far more curious about her general altruism, and the reasons behind it. Dao is also especially intrigued by the strange chants she speaks during hunts, as while he cannot clearly hear them, he is sure there is great meaning and power behind those words.
Unaffiliated
Logan Ace
"We are co-workers in more ways than one, and it is never too tiresome to listen to his words around a campfire as we eat."
As unlikely as it is to share such specific duties, Logan is someone that Dao is happy to share them with. Both have a joy of discovering new things, as well as talking of their collective findings. Though Dao can sometimes get lost in the jargon Logan can use at times, he always makes note to try and ask for clarifications, or at least to nod along. On top of that, Dao will often gift Logan the odds and ends he himself finds if they are of no great importance, and is happy to listen to whatever theories he might have of them.
Yunlāw Jín
"It's actually pretty convenient to fight alongside him, and not just because I can heal off the damage, but because often, the food is already cooked!"
Despite the joke above, Dao really does have a lot of fun fighting alongside Jin. While Dao often enjoys the thrill of a proper hunt, there's no taking away from the fact that he enjoys the cathartic release that a good ol' fashioned brawl gives. That being said, while Dao will fight with Jin plenty of times, even adjusting his Arts to better acclimate to Jin's, he refuses any serious attempt at sparring from the mad monkey. He fears that both of them may lose themselves in the heat of battle, and it may pull the spirit from the pit of his stomach, eager to feast on simian flesh.
Overseers
General
While Dao does try to keep out of sight and out of trouble for their sakes, he does occasionally have to deal with them from time to time, both for the occasional hunting requests and in order to submit his own survey results of the lands without. What little he knows of them, he can at least feel as if he can trust that they have the best intentions in mind.
Dao does make a note of their power, however. He is confident that, should circumstances force it, they would be able to subdue him, or perhaps even kill him, should he lose control of his appetite, the thought of which brings him a small, but worrying comfort.
Exorcists
General
Dao is rightfully wary around Exorcists. With their very practices presenting him with pain, and his own existence being a cause for alarm amongst their ilk, he feels that they too, are rightfully wary. He has looked to them for assistance before, but as he was being exorcised, the Spirit began to drag him down with it. With his own life at stake, he elected not to exorcise the spirit within, seeking other means to rid himself of it instead.
That being said, what good he sees exorcists do, he finds comforting. Along with the overseers, should anything go wrong, he will most likely be quickly and swiftly dealt with.
Sometime he wonders what that would be like.
Insurgents
General
Dao does not like Insurgents, to put it simply. With his own life already being a bed of chaos, he does not wish for it to be made moreso, especially those who have no reason to suffer that way. Perhaps it is an inevitability, or perhaps, as sages would say, chaos can have its own place in the world, but he does not have to like it.
Their existence makes him somewhat paranoid, and he is always wary of warnings if they are about, for he believes that someone such as he would make an easy pawn for them to move, should they deem it fit for them to do so.
Smugglers
General
While Smugglers too, are their own form of Chaos, Dao finds that he can sympathize much more with the plight of those who are in need or want of such smuggled goods. He takes lives in order to live, and what Smugglers do is often less than that...still, as much as he can find good in the deed, he does find some issue with those who hoard money with their operations. Perhaps he is simply too wary of taking too much, but he cannot in good conscience accept one who takes far more than what is needed.
Truths Unknown to Dao
The Matter of the Curse
Unbeknownst to Dao, the very state of his curse is a result of a botched ritual. A cult made an attempt and place a powerful spirit within a powerful body and then gain control of it. Unfortunately for them, whether through error or other circumstance, it failed. The results of this experiment not only resulted in the unique strength and nature of the malevolent spirit, but in the shattering of the body's own Aura Reserves.
