Legion

Many many years ago, a child was born in China.

Nobody knew what was wrong with them.

At that time, I was taken from Germany, alongside a battalion of other medics, doctors, and scientists from all across the world, to study that child’s condition.

They radiated heat, light, and warmth, like a little sunshine. We were all giddy like elementary schoolers when given candies. That was the discovery of the century.

That was the discovery of the century…

At that time, he had no way to know what was coming.

They demanded we… experiment on that child, discover the secrets behind their biology, and learn how to replicate their powers.

It was the moment when things fell apart.

Many of us were sent back to our homes, and many more were executed, but I stayed, for I knew if I came back home empty-handed, I would be the target of shame and humiliation amongst fellow scientists.

The few of us that remained, experimented on that poor child, all for the sake of our names, legacies, money, and many other interests I am not privy to.

We managed to make a way to get powers based on her, but it was too late, as the world experienced a growth of those born with powers.

We were of no use anymore, and we knew it. That was why we, the ones brought to China, disbanded right before they came to dispose of us.

We had the only way to create artificial powers, or quirks as they were named way later, with us. We burned our search.

We used the result of our experiments to grant us these new powers.

Mine allowed me to outlast the feeble expectancy of my flesh, to live longer than any other human, I think.

Even if they weren’t me, they would live in my stead.

I explored the world. I research those powers, I was there when it was named quirks. I lived amongst those with quirks, I learned from them.

I learned how they expressed themselves with those powers, I saw what they were inside.

They were us, humans. Nothing more, nothing less.

Through years of research, I concluded that those powers shouldn’t be restrained, but learned. If we restrained them, the pressure would build, and one day it would explode.

This is why I thought of helping them control their powers through programs, medicines, and equipment. They deserve no less than us, if we teach our children how to read and write, why shouldn’t we teach them how to use their gifts from early on?

Sadly, few shared my thoughts. The government tried to repress them, and this led to the pressure I feared. A war exploded throughout the world.

The Warlord Era. In some places like Africa and Middle Asia, that era never ended.

I saw societies collapse and rise in that time, and what I feared came to pass. Those with quirks, and those without, ostracized each other, and then came the ostracization of mutants by both parties.

This was not the world I wanted to live in. I want coexistence, for a place where children with destructive and strange powers are not shunned but embraced, taught how to live, and be themselves without fear.

Sure, some will never live in society, but those types already existed before. What is the problem in those people’s eyes?

After the Warlords settled down, and a new era flourished, the cold grip of the Hero Agencies throughout the world came to be, and my dreams died a little.

No one could use their quirks anymore. They couldn’t learn how to control themselves, for it was a crime. They were forbidden from adapting to their quirks to avoid them being a hindrance in their lives.

I can’t stand that. I will not condone it.

This is a world not worth living.

This world is why I want to tear down the Hero society. I want those children, the ones with dangerous quirks, the ones with quirks that hurt their lives, the ones who fear themselves, to live happily, in a world that will teach them how to walk.

She turned around to look at that slime girl, shunned by the world, lost and confused about life. She was young, just as young as the current iteration of herself.

They were on a rooftop, in the middle of the night, as the lights of Tokyo shone brightly below them. She raised her hand towards the slime girl.

“I have gone by many names, but I am Legion now, for we are many. For we have many to help. Say, then, Shion-san. Will you follow me? Be the first of this legion?”
