4:17 And it's begun. Welcome to this special talk show commemorating hololive production's fifth anniversary, (Tokino Journey) "The Bridge Across Time"!
4:28 Joining us today will be Tanigo Motoaki, who is the founder of COVER, the company behind hololive production,
4:35 as well as Tokino Sora, who is hololive production's very first member. Together with a few guests who'll join later,
4:42 we'll look back on the events of the past five years, and also share some stories from behind the scenes.
4:50 Being big hololive fans, we from Nishikigoi will be your hosts. Comedy duo Nishikigoi Masanori Hasegawa and Takashi Watanabe We hope you'll enjoy the show!
4:58 And thank you for joining us. Thank you for having us! Thank you.
5:04 First of all, I'd like you to introduce yourselves.
5:10 Mr. Tanigo, please go ahead. Certainly. I'm Tanigo Motoaki, CEO of COVER Corporation.
5:18 The members and fans call me by my nickname "YAGOO" instead.
5:24 Thank you for having me. It's a pleasure. I thought "YAGOO" was your real name.
5:30 Oh, you did? I did. Nice to meet you, YAGOO. Likewise.
5:36 Nice to meet you, Hasegawa-san. Watch it. He's the CEO. This isn't just any guy you're talking with. He's loaded.
5:42 As you already mentioned, I'm hololive's first member. My name is Tokino Sora!
5:48 I'm super nervous, but I'll try my best to talk a whole lot about these past five years.
5:56 Thank you!
6:01 That's the real Sora-san over there, Masanori-san. It's good to meet her.
6:06 It is, it is. Nice to meet you too! I'm glad to see you!
6:12 Shouldn't you say hello to her? Oh, right. Can I say hello to you?
6:18 Sure, please go ahead. HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU! No need to yell it.
6:24 I apologize for his behavior. Sorry about that, Sora-san. HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU!
6:31 She said it too! That's so nice! I'm so glad! Thank you.
6:36 Thank you for playing along with this, Sora-san. You know, there's one thing I was wondering after hearing their introductions.
6:42 What's that? YAGOO - how old are you? Can't you be a bit more polite?
6:48 You want to know my age? I do. I'm 48. Oh, 48. He's young.
6:54 He is. You actually look even younger than that. Thank you.
6:59 I'm 51 right now. So you're between Takashi and me. Right, I'm 44.
7:06 So you started this five years ago, right? Right. That means you were 43. Around that age, yes.
7:13 That's amazing. Moving on. hololive production is celebrating its fifth anniversary, YAGOO-san.
7:23 Right. We use Sora-san's debut on September 7th, 2017 as hololive's starting point,
7:30 so it's been exactly five years. So the day of her debut is also the day hololive was born.
7:37 Yes, that's kind of when it all began. Sora-san, how did the past five years feel?
7:44 Did they go by in an instant? The first year felt long, to be honest.
7:50 Oh, it did? That's in part because it was a tough time.
7:57 So that one felt long. But since then, I got a lot of juniors,
8:02 and I got to do many new things, including concerts. I think we'll be talking about that afterwards,
8:09 but anyway, once things started getting ever busier, time started flying by, and the remaining years had passed before I knew it.
8:16 I see. It was just you in the beginning, wasn't it? Yes, for about half a year.
8:24 Half a year? Wow. That does sound tough.
8:30 What were we doing five years ago? Five years ago, we weren't on TV at all yet,
8:38 and we never won any comedy competitions either. We were actually doing part-time jobs.
8:44 I straight up went scavenging for food. That... has nothing to do with five years ago. It's just a you thing.
8:51 We barely had any money. Don't pick food off the street.
8:58 He doesn't have to go dumpster diving anymore. We're scraping by now. It's going better now.
9:04 Well then. We have a timeline of hololive production's history so far,
9:11 and will be looking back on it together with YAGOO-san and Sora-san, as well as the guests who will be joining us later.
9:18 Once again, we hope to make this a good show with you.
9:23 Let's start in 2016, a bit before hololive was born.
9:29 Here it is. On 2016/06/13, COVER Corporation was founded.
9:38 Did you plan on going with VTubers right from the start?
9:43 Well, at the time, the term "VTuber" didn't exist yet.
9:51 Instead, we wanted to try creating a service based on VR that would allow people across the world to come together.
10:00 So we started out with a VR table tennis game to do just that.
10:06 An online table tennis game. How did that turn out?
10:12 That table tennis game. Did it sell? Well, we handed it out for free, so it really didn't earn us anything at all. For free?!
10:19 We weren't sure that was the best idea afterwards. Leaving revenue aside, though, did it have a lot of players?
10:26 I think that, as a free VR table tennis game, it did have a large impact, even outside Japan.
10:36 But if you'd made money on that, hololive might not exist today, right?
10:41 Yes, that's certainly possible. That's scary to think about! Good thing it was free. Good thing that table tennis game was free.
10:47 I never knew that. So it almost didn't happen. I see, so that's how it went. You didn't start out with VTubers.
10:54 That's right. I'd already worked on character promotion at a different company before starting COVER,
11:01 and so we created a system for a VR character to provide live commentary
11:10 even while developing the table tennis game. And then... How do I put it?
11:17 It continued growing from there, and soon after, around the end of 2016,
11:22 when Kizuna AI-san appeared and brought the term "Virtual YouTuber" with her,
11:29 we thought to ourselves that we could do the same.
11:37 So that's when we kind of changed direction. I see.
11:43 So there were a few twists and turns involved. After that, we get to September 2017,
11:50 when Sora-san had her debut. Yes, indeed. I see.
11:56 Let's take a look at her first stream.
12:01 Oh, we can still see it. My first stream....! Let's check it out. This is what I looked like at the time.
12:08 Wow. I'm not saying anything. Can you see me?
12:14 Am I on screen? Yes, you are. Can you hear me? We can.
12:20 There's no music. No background, either.
12:26 Seems like everything's working. Well then, let's get started! Cute. Good evening, everyone!
12:33 Nice to meet you! I'm Tokino Sora! I was born in 2000 and am 17 years old,
12:38 and currently in my second year of high school! Do you often watch live streams?
12:46 I wonder... Ah, you do! I wonder what kind. They cut out the part where I went quiet.
12:54 It was only your first stream after all. But you have to keep talking when there's no music.
13:02 There was a lot of awkward silence.
13:08 I'll be streaming again at the same time next week, so I hope to see you then!
13:17 I streamed once a week back then. Once a week?
13:24 You can tell it was early days for you, but still, that was really good for a first stream.
13:32 You looked confident. Talked without stuttering a single time.
13:37 No, no, I was super nervous. There's strength in your voice. I would've expected it to tremble.
13:44 I was talking loudly to prevent that. No, really, you did great.
13:50 I'm impressed. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised. You're the symbol of hololive, after all.
13:57 How many viewers did you have at the time? I'm curious about that too.
14:03 If I remember right... On an average day, it would've been
14:08 thirteen people. Thirteen?! What? In reality, there were more,
14:15 but many of them were people involved with the project. If you leave those out,
14:22 there were about thirteen "real" viewers. I still remember being happy that
14:29 a whole thirteen people came to watch me. She's not saying "only thirteen" but "a whole thirteen." I wonder if those people are still watching now.
14:38 I hope they are. That would be nice, right?
14:43 Does that mean you had a large staff? Well, we only had two...
14:51 Including me, we only had two employees. Just two at first? As for the rest, we got a few people helping us out.
15:00 So you started out with barely any staff and just kept on organizing streams to slowly grow your viewer base?
15:08 Pretty much, yes. We also thought of activities for her to do.
15:17 Like playing charades.
15:24 Right now, she has a partner called Ankimo, which was another idea we had.
15:31 The live aspect also made it much harder to avoid awkward moments compared to edited videos.
15:39 So yes, I remember us sitting together and trying to come up with new ideas.
15:46 I would've never thought you started out with that few people. That's amazing.
15:52 Moving on to December. This is where we see the word "hololive" for the first time.
16:00 So it was an app at first? Yes, at first we brought it to the world in the form of an app.
16:10 We released it as an app for watching Sora-chan's streams.
16:17 "hololive" was originally the name of the system used for creating her streams,
16:24 but we reused the name for the app for watching those streams.
16:31 Then in the year after that, we extended it to allow anyone to become a VTuber
16:37 using the camera on their smartphone.
16:42 I see, I see. So "hololive" was an app for watching Sora-chan.
16:48 Yes, an app for watching her streams. Or the app for creating those streams.
16:55 And now, it's the name of the group. That's right. That's amazing.
17:01 Yes. In 2018, hololive talents increased, expanding the VTuber agency.
17:09 Shirakami Fubuki, who was around at the time, joins us to take a deeper dive into the period.
17:18 Let's go! KNOOOCK KNOOOCK GOES THE FOX! I'm Shirakami!
17:24 Thanks for having me! Thanks for joining us! HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU! That's enough.
17:29 KNOOOCK KNOOOCK GOES THE FOX! KNOOOCK KNOOOCK GOES THE FOX! FOOOX!
17:36 Thanks for the Masanori version of your greeting. Thanks for that, Fubuki. No, it's my pleasure.
17:42 Consider it an homage. All right! Now we'll be taking a look at hololive's timeline with Fubuki-san.
17:50 hololive continuously debuted new talents in 2018 starting with Robocosan's debut in March, the 1st Gen members in May,
17:57 2nd Gen members in August, and GAMERS in December. That's amazing.
18:04 It was quite a hectic period for hololive. Wow. I feel like you probably had more streamers than staff at the time.
18:12 I think so. Yeah. I think that was the case when we debuted the 1st Gen members. That's pretty rough!
18:20 It really was! That's a lot of rowdy kids to work with! Rowdy kids?
18:26 But we did grow from the initial team of two-three people
18:32 when we debuted the 1st and 2nd Gens. You debuted around this time, Fubuki-san,
18:40 but how did you actually get into hololive? All of us in 1st Gen auditioned for our roles, actually.
18:48 I see! Yup! Back then, I was a wandering soul without a body,
18:55 and I saw that the 1st Gen had bodies, so I gave the audition a shot and surprisingly made the cut!
19:06 It was a surprise. That's amazing! I wasn't sure if I was good enough. I'm pretty sure I was talking to YAGOO-san directly via email back then.
19:15 Is that so? Was YAGOO-san present during the interview? Rather than an interview...
19:22 It was an audition? Yeah. Yup! I was in charge of the selection process with another staff member.
19:27 Right? What made you decide to pick Fubuki-san? I have to say it's because of her cute voice, I guess?
19:37 It's hard to say it in front of the person in question. Just say it, why don't you?
19:43 She's your employee! It's fine! True. No need to hold back. YAGOO-san does love his cute voices. Sure.
19:51 Do you, YAGOO-san? Everyone does!
19:56 Old men tend to love those cute voices. I see! I wasn't the only member of 1st Gen, of course.
20:05 We also had some members with zero streaming experience. Is that so? Yup! Yep!
20:10 Especially Aki Rosenthal, who we call Aki-chan or AkiRose. She didn't know how to stream at all back then,
20:17 and she didn't even have the equipment for it. So she had to use other methods like streaming from her smartphone. What a tenacious girl.
20:23 Yeah! She streamed with only her phone? Yup! Nowadays, we're streaming on our PCs,
20:31 but we weren't sure what to do when we started out, so there was a lot of trial and error.
20:37 In Aki-chan's case, she didn't know how to use a PC.
20:42 She had to ask us for advice, and we taught her. That's nice of you girls. I remember AkiRose-san doing a drinking stream
20:53 where she got sloshed and started self-narrating. Oh, yeah.
20:58 It was really hilarious.
21:03 That's one of AkiRose's charms. I didn't know someone could call themselves out rationally like that.
21:11 It was a treat. Now let's take a look at hololive's timeline in 2019.
21:18 Wow, that's a lot of milestones. Yeah! hologra started in 2019, huh?
21:24 Yeah! It's been running since 2019! Yup! This chart really makes it easier to see.
21:30 You formed INNK Music in 2019, and added AZKi-chan and Sui-chan to the group, right? Yup.
21:36 First, you started airing holo no Graffiti aka hologra in April.
21:42 It's a popular series that's still running on hololive's official YouTube channel. Have you watched hologra before, Masanori-san?
21:48 I'm sorry to say I haven't, actually. You haven't?
21:53 Whaaat? Sorry. Are you mad at me? They definitely are. I'm really sorry!
21:58 It's okay! Don't worry about it! You don't have the right to sit here You can still enjoy it even if you start now. if you never watched hologra before!
22:04 Is that so? I think the episode that shocked me the most was the one where you learn that Robocosan's arms were detachable.
22:10 Oh, yeah! The episode where her arm got detached and turned sentient.
22:16 I'd love to watch that. It turned sentient? Yeah. The arm... Moved by itself!
22:22 ...moved by itself. The series has some surprisingly crazy episodes. A lot of it makes you go, "Oh wow." I wanna watch it now.
22:27 Please watch it! hologra is really entertaining. You've got to watch it, Masanori. Please do! Please do!
22:32 Then, in May, hololive production created 2 branches under the company, INNK Music, which focused solely on music,
22:38 and the male VTuber group, HOLOSTARS, gaining new groups of fans.
22:44 Yup! Yup! Was that around when you guys started focusing more on music?
22:50 Yes. Through INNK Music. INNK Music was formed with the intention of doing things
22:59 like concerts or foraying into the music industry.
23:05 Wow... I see. And HOLOSTARS was formed to tap into the market of female fans, which hololive lacked at the time,
23:14 but we'll be looking at their history later on with some other guests. Now let's talk about the big turning points for hololive,
23:23 starting with its collaboration with atré Akihabara.
23:28 Do the two of you girls remember this collab? I sure do! We got to collaborate with atré Akihabara!
23:35 We were showcased in an amazing place that collaborated with lots of big anime.
23:43 I couldn't believe it. It truly is an amazing achievement. Yeah, it made me realize how much we've really grown.
23:51 That's great. There were lots of shots of us on the building...
23:58 It kind of, like... It felt like we were actually there in Akihabara!
24:06 Wow. It was really awesome. I was so happy. Yup.
24:11 It's definitely an indescribable feeling.
24:17 It seems like the collab was quite the success, with crowds lining up day after day,
24:22 but on top of it being a smash hit, it seems like you guys gained a lot more than just that, YAGOO-san.
24:29 This art had a hand in it, right? Yeah. I think this group artwork set us apart from other exhibitions,
24:37 and our fans liked it as well. It portrayed hololive as a group of idols, didn't it?
24:46 Yeah. Like a gathering of them. This was designed with the idea that we could gather all the members at the time together
24:56 and see if we could make it feel like an idol group. So the concept of the design was already about idols at the time?
25:01 Yes. We got someone who specializes in that particular style to design the artwork for us.
25:07 This experiment showed us quite clearly that our fans wanted that idol element.
25:15 I see. It also gave me the confidence, or rather, showed me that it was the right move to try
25:23 and develop hololive into an idol group as we grew. This was when it became clear. Something like, "Wait, maybe we can actually pull it off"?
25:30 I suppose so. This was the start of YAGOO's tough times. YAGOO's tough times?
25:36 Yeah. We were finally being recognized as idols. I see.
25:42 Up until that point, people were questioning if we weren't just comedians, but we were finally able to say, "Yes, we are idols."
25:52 That's a good point. I got into VTubers back in 2018 myself,
25:57 Oh! and even I thought, "Oh, they were idols?"
26:03 Yeah, we are! It felt like something that came out of nowhere, after the fact.
26:09 That's also true. You're probably not wrong there! Yeah. I think that's a fair point.
26:14 After deciding to develop hololive into an idol company, you guys announced hololive Summer 2019.
26:22 This event was meant to coincide with Comic Market in August. You all debuted your swimsuit outfits at this event, right?
26:32 Yeah. Swimsuits, huh. We all had our own swimsuits and we, uh...
26:39 Would you say we got together? Yeah, we all got together.
26:45 And we did an exhibit and were all like, "Summer means one thing, and that's swimsuits!" "Let's enjoy summer in our swimsuits!"
26:51 I think it was an enjoyable event for all of us.
26:57 It was a really amazing event. Thank you guys for doing it. No, we should be thanking all the fans for making it a success.
27:04 But yeah, there's this perception of "Idols mean swimsuits." If you're singing in a swimsuit, you're an idol.
27:11 Yeah. Right. We wanted them to sing and dance like idols in swimsuits.
27:21 I don't think there were that many VTubers who wore swimsuits back then.
27:27 Right. Well, you had some VTubers who had their own individual swimsuits,
27:34 but I don't think there were any on the level of a full group. Did you feel a sense of achievement with that?
27:41 Yeah, I'd say I did. Oh? Oh? That's our CEO.
27:46 The response from our fans was overwhelming. Wasn't it? Yeah! I see. Yup!
27:51 Everyone was leaping out of their seats screaming, "OMG SWIMSUITS?!" They were all going, "YEEES!"
27:57 Right? Wouldn't it be great to do that every summer? I... suppose so.
28:05 Let's put that aside. Yeah. At this point, the swimsuits got, uh... I see.
28:10 ...benched. Benched... It pretty much got made a one-and-done deal. Oh my. Yeah. Yup.
28:16 I see. So the fans loved it. Let's roll the promotional video from back then for everyone to see.
28:26 That's nice. Yep, that's an idol group, all right.
28:34 It's great how all our swimsuits had our own unique characteristics, right? We're all so cute! You're all idols through and through.
28:41 Yeah. You all look cute, and your swimsuits are so individualistic.
28:47 Like Matsuri-chan's tan. That tan's amazing, isn't it? Uh-huh.
28:57 Wow. Phew... That was an amazing music video. That really takes me back!
29:05 We actually got a tip-off about this music video. Oh? Take us away, Fubuki-san.
29:11 Sure! We actually have insider scoop about this MV. Please do share. Everyone looked like they were having fun singing and dancing in the MV just now,
29:23 but we were under a reeeally tight schedule to make this MV.
29:30 Really? Yup. Yeah! Was that the case? The swimsuits were a thing, but we originally had no plans for us to sing and dance in them.
29:40 Oh, is that so? Yeah! It was a sudden decision to have us sing and dance in our swimsuits.
29:47 What? Yup. It's true. And whose idea was that?
29:53 I mean it'd have to be YAGOO, wouldn't it? The CEO. Wow. Originally,
29:58 So there weren't any plans originally to do this, huh. our focus was just on Comic Market. Yup. The plan was to just do an exhibit there. Yeah.
30:03 We originally intended to do an exhibit at the Summer Comic Market and make an artbook.
30:12 Then, we decided that maybe we could make the artbook about swimsuits.
30:19 Uh-huh. We got the idea of "summer means swimsuits"
30:24 and wondered if maybe it'd make fans go wild if we did a group song.
30:31 So that's how we arrived at the decision. Did you barely manage to get all that done within your schedule? Yeah.
30:36 I managed the project, and I definitely put a lot of pressure on our team, like our external collaborators and our internal staff.
30:47 But in the end, we managed to make it happen. The production quality definitely doesn't show that.
30:54 I remember us barely making it in time. Yeah! We barely made it. That's amazing.
31:00 I definitely put everyone through some tough times back then. Thank you to everyone for your hard work.
31:06 It was tough, wasn't it? Let me apologize in place of your CEO.
31:12 Hey, YAGOO! Why are you making our guests apologize in your stead?! Yeah!
31:19 But if it wasn't for the CEO's decision, the fans wouldn't have gotten what they did,
31:24 so I think it played out quite well. It's really great. It is, yeah. Okay! That's it for the interesting insider scoop.
31:32 All things considered, the event was quite the success, and I think the CEO's decision was the right move.
31:39 Yes! hololive exploded thanks to this, didn't it? Yeah. Yeah.
31:44 Yep. A reckless move that paid off. Yeah. Sure was.
31:50 It definitely was. Yeah. Uh-huh. And right as this busy summer came to an end,
31:57 we have the 3rd Gen with their debuts. 3rd Generation...
32:02 3rd Gen, it's the one with... Usada Pekora-san. Yeah.
32:07 So Peko-chan is your favorite, after all! I wouldn't say "favorite"... I support everyone.
32:15 So you support the hololive brand? The brand? The brand, huh? I'd say I just support every member.
32:21 Ah, I see! Is that so? I just like everyone. So you just like everyone!
32:27 When was the moment when you came to liking Peko-chan? Well...
32:34 When I had a chance to talk about hololive on various shows,
32:40 I was watching Usada Pekora-san.
32:45 Yeah. So I had a chance to talk about her as well.
32:51 Nice. Enough about me, let's move on! Next, we'll talk about
32:57 the October concert held by Sora-san. Her solo concert, Dream!, was held in Shibuya.
33:07 This is the last song! Let me hear your voices! This was hololive's very first
33:15 live audience concert, wasn't it? Yes. I think so.
33:20 Yeah, it was! So there was the concert hall. And we had people come in,
33:25 and we held the concert. Yeah. The venue's max capacity was 700 people. Right.
33:32 They said that fitting all 700 people in there was a real challenge.
33:37 They could only seat 700 people max. If you get that many people in there,
33:44 for like, the whole venue, you'd end up trying to squeeze them in just to shut the doors.
33:49 It was really tough. Wow. I remember it so well. It's a risk to fit 700 people in when 700 is your max seating.
33:57 You need to leave some room! Right? Still, though. That's quite a feat. I remember going, "This is like a mosh pit!" That's quite a feat.
34:03 I remember going, "This is like a mosh pit!" "How's everyone? Hanging in there?
34:08 It's not too cramped, is it?" I was like that for the whole concert.
34:14 You were performing while also worrying. It was a sight to behold! Them pushing at each other like that.
34:23 I couldn't help but worry. It's still incredible to have that large of an audience. It was so awe-inspiring, though.
34:30 To think I started a couple of years back with just 13 people. Right? It's staggering when you think about it.
34:36 I'm amazed just hearing about it. Thank you very much! Amazing progress. Fubuki-san! You also held a birthday concert on this year, yes?
34:44 Yes! I held my own birthday concert! I think it was a first for all of hololive?
34:51 Or rather it was the first concert among us 1st Gens. Yeah, it was!
34:56 Back then, I was really bad with the whole song and dance thing! Oh, really?
35:02 Yeah! During that time, instead of doing idol activities, I wanted to focus on my hobbies.
35:08 I only saw myself as an idol when― Well, everyone calls me one, but it never really stuck to me in a sense.
35:14 When I performed in the concert, though, and everyone was like, "Wow, Fubuki's a real idol now!"
35:21 that's when I started thinking, "I am an idol now..." It was that concert that made me realize it.
35:30 That's the story. Would you say it was your turning point? Very much so! It all happened because the concert made me feel
35:39 that singing, dancing, and meeting with my fans Wow. was fun and worthwhile. Just looking at the timeline lets us see how you all became idols.
35:49 Exactly! We all gradually became idols! hololive's had an amazing history.
35:55 In hindsight, yeah. It all started with individual members
36:00 holding their own solo concerts. Yeah. On December 1st, Hoshimachi Suisei moved from INNK Music to hololive!
36:11 And on December 3rd, the hololy smartphone app was released!
36:16 Have you downloaded it yet? YAGOO-san, can you tell us what hololy is?
36:23 hololy is an app that uses your smartphone's AR functionality
36:30 to summon our affiliated talents into the real world. It enables an experience
36:36 where you can have fun taking pictures with them. So, for example, I could take a picture with Sora-chan?
36:43 Yes. Yep! We made it with... what was it...
36:48 We made the app with the concept of having the fans experience the fun in making derivative works.
36:54 I see! We actually took a few pictures of Masanori-san with hololy!
37:00 Let's take a look! Before this recording, the Nishikigoi duo took celebratory photos using hololy. You're too close.
37:06 Move away a bit. This looks good.
37:12 They took a photo with Sora! Got a nice shot. What kind of pics did he snap? It's a good shot.
37:19 Where's my face?! Wha?! There's only half of him! Sliced in two!
37:25 Sorry about that. My face isn't even there! Sora-chan was the only one in my sights. Come on!
37:30 My bad. You're terrible! He looks like he's blending in with the balloons at the back.
37:36 He does. One with the background. Right?! Down to the color! This is the next one.
37:42 Now this! This one's nice. I like it.
37:47 Oh, now this one! Nice shot. I like it a lot. This shows how easy it is
37:53 to use the app to take interesting pics. It was fun to use too. That's the intention.
37:59 Our company also deals with software development, so one of our selling points
38:05 is how we can still develop these apps. Yeah. Using technologies such as
38:10 augmented and virtual reality, one of our goals is to develop such apps
38:16 that can, well, be enjoyed by everyone. I see.
38:21 Even as a VTuber agency, the company's developments in tech will continue to progress.
38:29 Over the 2019-2020 New Year's period, hololive 4th Gen debuted!
38:38 In 2020, hololive production launched more new things. It was a year of unprecendented challenges!
38:51 If there's one thing we have to touch on hololive's history, it's this! Listen up. This will be on the exam.
38:59 The date was January 24th, 2020. It was a legendary day. Held at Toyosu PIT was hololive's first ensemble concert,
39:08 Nonstop Story! We're here! Hooray!
39:14 That was a fun time! So nostalgic! It's already been that long? It's a trip down memory lane!
39:21 It's that far back now, huh? Yeah. Featuring a total of 23 talents, all of them standing together on stage for the first time,
39:30 it was a highly anticipated live concert. It really was legendary, right?
39:35 It was! Both Sora-chan and I already had done our own solo concerts.
39:42 Having all of hololive perform in a single concert was a first, and we were unsure if it was even possible to pull off.
39:50 Like, would everyone be able to perform, and all that. From there, all of us went to have dance lessons together.
39:58 Singing lessons too. Among all those happenings, the most memorable things I remember from the concert
40:05 was when we got our idol outfits. I remember that! There were a lot of design patterns for the idol outfits.
40:14 We'd choose what fits us the most, and request accessories we'd like to have on our outfits,
40:20 and they'd make them. A lot of thought went into those outfits, so we were quite happy to reveal them.
40:28 Speaking of which, here is footage from the concert itself! Ooh!
40:36 Wow, this is impressive. This takes me back!
40:43 Whoa! There's a lot going on there! It's all of us on stage! This was when I thought,
40:48 "There's our audience, right there!" That was so fun! This is basically hololive's anthem.
40:55 Truly an anthem. The view from the stage was a sight to behold.
41:01 Everyone's penlights were so pretty. It was so pretty. True!
41:06 That's nice.
41:15 Good times... Everyone remembered the calls too! Yeah! They did! Right before the concert itself,
41:21 A-chan led a practice run for Shiny Smily Story's call and response.
41:26 Impressive. The audience response is perfect.
41:32 The audience was amazing! All the fans memorized it to a T! That's amazing.
41:42 Just watching it again still amazes me. Right?! Right now, we have a lot of people
41:47 who got to know hololive because of this concert, and are fans of ours to this day.
41:53 This concert really did put us in the spotlight. Right.
41:59 So pretty. It really was. That's really cool.
42:04 Undoubtedly fantastic! The concert's hashtag, #NonstopHololive,
42:10 garnered over 300,000 tweets, and became a World #1 trending topic!
42:17 Outstanding! Thank you very much! That's amazing! They were the World #1!
42:22 YAGOO took over the world with that! That he did! "The world is mine!" "We did it!"
42:28 Great work, YAGOO! This achievement shocked not just the VTuber world,
42:33 but the entire idol industry. Of course, YAGOO-san was very much elated by this, right?
42:39 If I were to be honest, I felt more relieved at everything. Relieved?! I felt so much relief after, looking back at it.
42:45 It took up a lot of our time, making all of the outfits, and all that prep.
42:51 In particular, it was our first time making an idol outfit with a unified design.
42:58 I'm sure the fans didn't expect us to go that far with the prep.
43:03 That's true. I can imagine that. We were quite unsure if the fans would actually like
43:09 the result of it all, up until the day itself.
43:16 It exceeded all expectations. You can say that, yes. It was, very much... yeah.
43:22 I was at the concert itself too. Yeah... I would say I was overcome with emotion.
43:28 Did you cry? I think... I did. Maybe.
43:34 You might have cried! It must have been an wonderful experience.
43:41 2020 was full of debuts! With hololive Indonesia 1st Gen debuting in April,
43:47 followed thereafter by 5th Gen and hololive English -Myth-, we became even more global!
43:56 For hololive Indonesia and English, we'll take a look back with some other guests later!
44:03 And in November 2020, Inugami Korone-san passed one million subscribers!
44:10 Fubuki-san followed only four days later! That's right! Thank you so much!
44:16 One million! Yes, two GAMERS in a row hit one million! I happened to reach it during a GAMERS collab stream.
44:27 Really? So they congratulated me right there, and I congratulated Ko'one, too.
44:33 I was just so happy that I cried on stream. Anyone would have!
44:39 It's the big 1M, after all! Wow... It's a real achievement! Yes, hololive really got a huge influx of fans that year.
44:48 I think I got around 700,000 subs just that year. No kidding?! If I recall.
44:55 That's incredible. Yes, we're very thankful. So would you say 2020 was a turning point for hololive?
45:06 Yes, absolutely. Thanks to the English and Indonesia girls joining,
45:14 we got a lot more viewers from overseas. I suspect those new overseas viewers were responsible for the burst in subscribers.
45:27 I see. After all, hololive is incredibly popular outside Japan, too.
45:32 It is. And next, I hope you're taking notes! Uh-huh. Right.
45:37 Amazingly, not even a year since January's 1st fes., 2nd fes. was held!
45:43 Truly, hololive was going nonstop! hololive 2nd fes. Beyond the Stage featured the hashtag
45:50 #koeteyukuhololive (#GoingBeyondWithhololive). Indeed, going beyond the previous fes., 28 members performed!
45:56 It was a jam-packed concert, spanning two days and with over 50 songs performed!
46:04 Yeah! Two days! We're so lucky! The next song will be our final song for the entirety of
46:13 hololive 2nd fes. Beyond the Stage. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for these two days!
46:18 So this is from day 2. Looks like it.
46:23 And there's Sui-chan. Sui-chan!
47:22 So wonderful. Yeah! What do you think, Masanori-san, compared to 1st fes.?
47:29 Well, that was the first time I've seen that footage, but the visuals were definitely even better than last time.
47:37 Even you can tell. Yes, you can definitely tell. What I really love about fes.
47:43 is getting to compare everyone's heights. Ah... Agreed!
47:48 Ah, 'cause they're all next to each other. I see. I'll be like, "Oh, so she's actually taller?"
47:54 It adds another layer of enjoyment. It does, doesn't it? It certainly does.
47:59 Yes, well... Uh-huh? For this concert, we used AR technology to make the talents "leap out of the screen."
48:08 Right. As you just saw. So it's even easier to compare their heights.
48:13 Yeah, I felt that! Hopefully it was effective. Truly amazing.
48:20 It was a wonderful show. Yeah. Back then, I couldn't believe we were performing for two days!
48:26 Two whole days! When I first heard about the concert, I thought we'd be all squeezed on stage!
48:32 That's how it was the first time! Yeah, it was! Then they said it'd be two days. Two days?!
48:38 Two days is really something. Booking a venue for two days? Can we even do that? Seriously.
48:43 I was happy, but at the same time, it was like, "Oh no... the Day 1 members and Day 2 members are separate...
48:50 Um, good luck, you guys!" Oh, I see! Yeah, exactly! So there was that, too.
48:56 Uh-huh. There was a lot of, "How are things going with Day 1? How's practice?"
49:02 Really? I see. 50 songs in two days. Really impressive.
49:07 So impressive. Definitely. So, 2020 began and ended with a fes.!
49:14 Next up is 2021! 2021 was a year of more major projects!
49:24 The first concert, "Bloom," was held on February 17th, a part of hololive IDOL PROJECT!
49:31 Members were recruited under a new, different concept.
49:37 YAGOO-san, what was special about this concert? Well, we wanted to respect each idol's vision,
49:42 whether that was to work solo or to focus on their non-idol activities like streaming.
49:52 For this concert in particular, we chose the members who wanted to go ahead with idol group activities to be a part of it.
50:02 So, all the people who said, "I'm interested!" That's right. We released original songs every week
50:09 for the nine weeks leading up to the concert, making it possible to hold it as our very first concert with all original songs.
50:17 Original songs nine weeks in a row. On the same day as the IDOL PROJECT concert,
50:23 hololive launched another project. Alternate timeline project: "hololive Alternative."
50:29 Let's look at trailer that was released at the time.
51:08 Even now, a year after the launch of Alternative, its world is still full of mystery.
51:17 Can you tell us more about that? Well, hololive Alternative is a project that makes use of hololive's lore to craft
51:27 another story in another world. Right now, we have two teaser PVs, and a serialized manga
51:34 in the manga app, Manga UP!
51:40 Fubuki-san is the main character of the manga. Is that right?
51:45 That's right! Well, it's a me that's not me. You from another world, right? With Mio.
51:52 Yes. It's like a shared main character spot with Ookami Mio in the manga.
51:58 It's serialized in Manga UP! So please give it a read! Please give it a read.
52:04 Moreover, we're working on a metaverse project based on the hololive Alternative world called holoEarth.
52:13 We're putting quite a bit of resources into it, so please look forward to further updates.
52:18 We'll be anticipating it! It's got a lot in store for the future,
52:24 so pay close attention to it! There was another project launched in August.
52:31 An unexpected horror project, "hololive ERROR."
52:37 There it is, hololive ERROR. Sora-san and Fubuki-san are both in this project.
52:45 This one is actually quite scary, isn't it? Well, yes.
52:50 It is. Yeah. I thought Sora-chan was so scary in the beginning. I was freaking out.
52:56 Yeah. It wasn't very scary overall in the trial version.
53:03 However, the actual game that came out this year
53:09 was so much scarier compared to the trial version that I was like, "What was the trial version?!"
53:19 It was actually scary, so I'd like for everyone to try it. By the way, how are you two with horror games?
53:25 I wonder. I don't play them that often. Oh, really? How are you with scary stuff, then?
53:33 Are you good with scary stuff? Not at all. You aren't? I'd love for you to play it, then. You seem like you'd handle it well.
53:39 In hololive ERROR, though, you only have to walk, so I think you can enjoy its horror aspects even as a beginner!
53:48 Enjoy horror? Really? Sora-chan, you're good with horror, though, aren't you?
53:55 I just find them fun. Don't believe her!
54:01 Her perception of "not very scary" is different from ours! It's actually quite scary. Sora-chan's "fun" is quite scary, yeah?
54:09 Yeah, it is. The story was really interesting, and there's a lot of places that are a little scary...
54:14 A little...? A little... But everyone's really cute, so it's not that scary.
54:20 I see! Really? So, YAGOO-san. Where did this horror project, hololive ERROR come from?
54:28 Well, when you think of summer, of course there's the beach and swimsuits and all that, but there's the whole "horror" aspect of it as well.
54:34 True. Also, we wanted to try something that went in a completely different direction
54:42 from our idol activities. Moreover, in it, our talents act as a different character
54:48 that only have similar appearances to them, so I hope people pay attention to their acting skills, as well.
54:55 Sounds interesting. The PC game is on sale on the hololive OFFICIAL SHOP.
55:02 Please try it! We'd like to try it out as well. Please do! Yay!
55:08 I really want to see your reactions. I want to try it. Yeah. Please do.
55:13 And, of course, there were debuts, too. Secret Society holoX hijacked our screens last November.
55:20 Unlike the previous generations, they don't have a number, do they? That's right. We wanted them to debut as a secret society, not a generation,
55:30 as well as create an idol unit feeling to them.
55:35 That's how we got SS holoX instead of just 6th Gen. So you had the concept figured out right away.
55:42 Yeah. And now we are down to the last event of 2021.
55:48 It's hidden for some reason, too. What in the world can it be? Was there something else? I wonder...
55:54 What is it? Reveal! Huh? "Nishikigoi Wins Annual Comedy M-1 Grand Prix..." Oops, sorry...
56:01 This is so out of the blue... You sure it's okay to put it in the hololive timeline? Congratulations! Oh, thank you.
56:07 Thanks. We apologize. No idea what's it doing there. What even... Why is it in the hololive timetable? I think back then...
56:14 I was together with some hololive member... I forgot with who exactly.
56:19 And Nishikigoi was trending on Twitter. So I remember having a passionate chat with them about Nishikigoi winning M-1.
56:27 Is that so? Thank you. Really? Thank you. We're really grateful.
56:32 It's barely been half a year since then... A bit more, actually. Yeah. Eight months, I think.
56:38 It was only eight months ago, huh. I couldn't even imagine we would get a spot on the hololive timetable.
56:45 Don't worry about it. Thank you, thank you. At last, we've reached the current year, 2022.
56:52 Here it is! Man, so many things have happened already, huh...
57:00 Right off the bat, something that's gonna be on an exam, everyone. The greatest events in hololive history,
57:08 hololive SUPER EXPO 2022 as well as hololive 3rd fes. Link Your Wish
57:13 were held in Makuhari Messe in March. In Makuhari Messe, man.
57:19 That's just amazing. I know, right? Can you imagine that? The EXPO was something new for hololive.
57:25 Sora-san, Fubuki-san, what can you tell us about the event? Unlike anything else before, we had various exhibitions this time!
57:34 So the biggest difference was that you could enjoy the show while exploring various displays on the EXPO.
57:39 There was like, an outfit exhibition, right? Yep! There was an outfit exhibition, as well as...
57:45 a food exhibition too! That's right! Also... Along with my Ankimo, there were a bunch of mascots around the EXPO.
57:53 Right! There were mascots and such! Wow. You could take photos with them too.
57:58 In a sense, it was not just a concert, but an event, where there were a lot of things
58:06 everyone could go to and experience first-hand.
58:11 Of course, the concert was also a level above the previous ones. Shall we see it for ourselves?
58:18 Let's do it.
58:24 Oh wow.
58:37 That's amazing. They look so real!
58:43 Almost jumping out of the screen.
58:53 Everyone is wearing a T-shirt here, right?
59:00 The knot is different for everyone, but... Will it show here...? AkiRose is the only one in the black T-shirt!
59:08 We got to choose the color ourselves, and she was the only one to pick black. Really?
59:14 Oh, really? Yeah. How interesting. Right? Almost everyone picked white.
59:19 We finally held a full-scale AR concert in front of a real audience.
59:26 We couldn't do that the previous year, after all.
59:31 We also had a live band for the music, along with our overseas talents taking part this time.
59:37 All of that was a new challenge for us. Truly a feat.
59:45 You are right. Only AkiRose-san is wearing a black T-shirt. Yeah. She was the only one here.
59:52 The stage was brilliant white. Yeah, brilliant white.
59:57 Seems like you are expanding and evolving all the time. What awaits us next?
1:00:04 YAGOO-san? Hm? We just had a blast in Makuhari Messe... There's a follow-up?
1:00:09 There's something after Messe? Well, of course. I would like to hold more events not only in Japan,
1:00:18 but in other parts of the world too. Oh, that sounds exciting. Please do! Let's do it!
1:00:24 Yup! Sounds good. hololive will truly become worldwide.
1:00:30 You sound so lonely... You sound like an otaku when an idol is going far away!
1:00:36 They will go far, you know. In July, hololive Summer returned for summer!
1:00:43 What does Watanabe-san want to say on behalf of fans? Thanks for bringing back the swimsuits, YAGOO-san.
1:00:51 Thanks so much. Thank you so much. Thanks so much for the swimsuits. Yeah! The swimsuits are finally back.
1:00:58 I'm so glad. Right? So what did you think about this year's summer swimsuits?
1:01:03 One different detail about this time is that... Last time, we all had different styles?
1:01:09 We were all different! We're in different colors this time, but we all have matching styles!
1:01:16 The themes are the same? Yeah, we're all the same. That's right! So, I'm not sure how to put this...
1:01:23 When we're all together, it's a very unified cuteness. I think that's really nice!
1:01:29 Oh! That's double the lethal dosage of cuteness. That's right! That's nice.
1:01:35 Unity. I'm sincerely grateful. Thank you so much. Oh no, the pleasure's all ours...
1:01:40 By the time this program has aired, summer will have already ended,
1:01:46 but are there any exclusive news that we can hear right now? Well, actually,
1:01:51 there's a new version of the song and music video of "Shiny Smily Story" in the works right now. What?!
1:01:57 A new what?! A new version? Can you... show that to us?
1:02:03 By the time this program airs, it'll already have been announced, so here it is!
1:02:08 Oh! Heck yeah!
1:02:17 Wow! It's so nostalgic. Right?
1:02:38 I wanna go here! Yeah, totally.
1:03:17 That was wonderful. Wow! That was wonderful.
1:03:23 Is this what "shook" feels like? Right? That's right. I'm shook. I'm so shook.
1:03:29 This is what it means to feel shook. Oh, man... To be able to have everyone, including holoX, in there
1:03:36 singing "Shiny Smily Story"... It just feels so moving. It's everyone!
1:03:41 The quality's gone up so much as well. Yeah. It's really great.
1:03:47 Oh, man... Oh right, that was everyone, wasn't it? That's right! It's "Shiny Smily Story" with everyone in it!
1:03:54 I think all our fans will be very excited about this too. So that means...
1:04:01 every time new talents join hololive...
1:04:06 you have to re-record it? Yeah. That's right. It's going to get even grander from here on out! It's going to be so much work...
1:04:13 Yeah! I think so. Well, it's the agency anthem. You have to sing it. Everyone has to sing it.
1:04:20 Yeah. Thanks for that wonderful preview! Yeah! We're looking forward to what hololive Summer will have to offer next year as well!
1:04:28 Yeah! This concludes the hololive JP segment of the program!
1:04:33 Fubuki-san! How have these last five years been for you? So much has happened during this time.
1:04:41 Right. It really feels like these five years passed by in an instant.
1:04:48 That's true. It all feels really nostalgic, but when I look back on it,
1:04:53 it all seems like it happened yesterday. But hololive is going to keep on going,
1:05:01 so I'm really excited for all of the even greater things we'll do. I'm looking forward to it all.
1:05:07 From my point of view, you've shown us so many different things,
1:05:14 and I can't believe that it's only been five years. Yeah! That's just my middle-aged perspective though.
1:05:19 Yeah. Yeah, yeah... Yeah. What's hololive gonna be like in another five years, YAGOO-san?
1:05:26 Hmm... I hope we do lots of other things. You've done so much in five years. No one knew who we were for 20 years.
1:05:34 It took a lot of time. Yeah, it did. That's a dense five years. Very dense. It's something else.
1:05:39 It is. Really? We can't wait to see what you achieve next!
1:05:44 Thank you for your time, Fubuki-san! Thank you. Thank you so much! All right!
1:05:56 Looking back on the history of hololive Indonesia Our next guest is from hololive Indonesia's 2nd Gen:
1:06:03 Anya Melfissa-san! Thank you for coming! Thanks for having me!
1:06:13 Masanori-san, shouldn't you say something too? HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU!
1:06:20 Thank you. She laughed out of politeness. Your Japanese is really good, Anya-san.
1:06:27 No no no, it really isn't. It's even better than I thought. It's better than that of Sakura Miko-san.
1:06:36 Let's look at the timeline. First, we have April 2020. The three members of hololive ID's 1st Gen made their debut.
1:06:44 Timing-wise, that would put them right between JP's 4th and 5th Gens.
1:06:50 Why Indonesia, exactly? Right. Japanese anime is quite popular in Indonesia.
1:06:58 You also see them doing a lot of cosplay. The whole culture is quite ingrained there,
1:07:04 so we thought it would be a good place to go next. Do you watch anime too, Anya-san?
1:07:12 I do, and how. I watch it a lot. Sora-san, what's your impression of hololive ID's 1st Gen?
1:07:22 Let's see... I think they each have their own specialty that's really visible.
1:07:31 I see, I see. Moona-san often gets associated with Minecraft,
1:07:37 but she's also really good at singing. Iofi-chan focuses on drawing
1:07:46 and makes that a big part of her streams. Risu-chan is also great at singing,
1:07:56 but she's also known for communicating well with others in games.
1:08:01 So yes, I think they each have something that makes them unique.
1:08:08 Later on, in December of the same year, the 2nd Gen made its debut with another three members,
1:08:13 one of whom is Anya-san. Anya-san, do you remember your debut?
1:08:19 My debut stream? I was super nervous at the time. You were?
1:08:26 I was. I did my self-introduction in Indonesian, English, and Japanese.
1:08:33 That's amazing. How come your Japanese is that good? I'm deeply humbled by your words.
1:08:39 "Deeply humbled"! That's an advanced expression you used there. I'm impressed. The 2nd Gen members can all speak Japanese and English,
1:08:48 so they can experience media from all kinds of countries and can use that knowledge in their streams.
1:08:54 If there's ever an event with all of hololive production, they could use those skills there too. They'll play an important role for sure.
1:09:00 Let's look at the next item on the timeline. April 2021.
1:09:06 The hololive ID song "id:entity voices" got released. It features all six members across the two generations.
1:09:16 The lyrics had a positive feeling to them. It was positive. My first impression was that it's very much an idol song.
1:09:28 It was an idol song. Our regular streams get so "unique" that people see us more as comedians,
1:09:36 so it was nice to be idols again for once. "For once"!
1:09:42 That's good to hear. And then we get to December. "Opening of the official online shop."
1:09:48 What's that about exactly? To put it simply, it's the Indonesian version of the hololive production OFFICIAL SHOP.
1:09:54 It offers merchandise of not just hololive ID, but all of hololive production to people in Indonesia.
1:10:01 So also of the JP side. Yes. The Indonesian fans must've been thrilled about that.
1:10:08 Well, originally we were planning to do things like revealing the 3D forms of the 1st Gen in the year before,
1:10:16 but that got delayed due to COVID, so we wondered if we couldn't give the fans something else as a replacement
1:10:28 and ended up opening the store. That's great. We're currently in the middle of preparing those 3D streams,
1:10:39 so I'd like to ask for a little more patience. So they're definitely coming? They are. Thank you.
1:10:46 Look forward to their 3D debut streams! Although, hololive Indonesia 1st Gen appeared in March's 3rd fes.
1:10:56 so their 3D was first revealed then!
1:11:04 Oh, wow. It's Moona. That was so cool. This was what it's all about.
1:11:13 Wow. Like a real artist.
1:11:22 Cute! The stage is cute too.
1:11:28 It is, right? Super cute.
1:11:41 This one's emotional. It is. Super emotional.
1:11:47 Like a real artist. Right?
1:11:55 So cute.
1:12:01 That's amazing. Until now, I only knew Moona-san from
1:12:08 her cozy Minecraft sessions with Pekora-san,
1:12:13 so seeing her put on such a performance is honestly overwhelming.
1:12:19 There's a huge gap, right? There is. Yes, when it comes to singing, the foreign members stand out in a way
1:12:26 that's different from the Japanese ones. They make a very cool impression.
1:12:35 The Indonesian members are cool, cute, and have other amazing qualities!
1:12:40 This year became more powerful because 3rd Gen debuted, adding even more charm!
1:12:50 I hear the 3rd Gen is hugely popular.
1:12:56 Kobo Kanaeru-san reached a million subscribers in July of this year.
1:13:02 Congratulations. Congratulations. That's amazing. It's amazing.
1:13:08 They're your first juniors, right, Anya-san? Yes, within ID, they're my first juniors.
1:13:16 The 3rd Gen is seen as mostly little brats, I think.
1:13:21 "Little brats"! You have a bit of a potty mouth, I see. They're all little brats in a way,
1:13:27 but they're good girls. They're all good girls.
1:13:33 So they're good little brats. 3rd Gen is rising in popular and 1st Gen is set to make their 3D debuts!
1:13:43 2nd Gen might have some fun things planned too! There's a lot more to come for hololive Indonesia!
1:13:59 Looking back on the history of hololive English Our guests are hololive English Myth's Ninomae Ina'nis-san
1:14:07 and Council's Hakos Baelz-san! Good to have you! Thank you!
1:14:14 Thank you! HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU!
1:14:25 Huh? Yeah, that's okay. That's how first-timers usually react.
1:14:31 Really?! Yes. Sorry for the shock, you two. Sorry 'bout that.
1:14:37 Actually... I've seen you before. You have?
1:14:43 Oh, really? I have! When I use YouTube for Japanese listening practice,
1:14:52 I'll watch videos from Japan. Right. And the "HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU!"...
1:14:59 The "HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU!" guy. ...left an impression on me. Oh really? That's me! No doubt!
1:15:05 The cheerful greeting guy! Hello! I'm that guy.
1:15:11 Okay, okay. I'm happy! Anyway, let's take a look back on your history!
1:15:17 Here it is. In September of 2020, the five members of hololive English -Myth- debuted!
1:15:26 Did you notice hololive's rise in popularity around the world before your debut, Ina'nis-san?
1:15:32 Actually, I was a hololive fan starting in 2018.
1:15:41 You were a fan! I was watching that whole time, but I'm happy to actually become a member of hololive.
1:15:53 Who did you watch around that time? In 2018? I saw some of Fubuki-senpai's debut...
1:16:02 I see! Really from near the start! Yeah! And after that, I watched a bit.
1:16:08 Wow! So you were a fan who turned into a member! Amazing! Definitely an amazing thing.
1:16:15 Y'know, I really like that one thing from EN. You do that thing where you become those little doll-like things and do stuff.
1:16:24 Oh! Ohh! Oh! Yeah, the VR Chat 3D models. Yeah!
1:16:30 The "Smol Series." They're really cute! They're so tiny, but the movements are totally realistic.
1:16:40 I found it really funny when I watched. With the addition of hololive English, have people from overseas started watching more frequently?
1:16:49 Indeed. As the English-speaking world is certainly very big...
1:16:57 True. you could say that we had some expectations of that.
1:17:03 And since the name recognition of hololive itself had been rising around the world,
1:17:09 we figured we should see an increase in viewership.
1:17:16 And to respond to those expectations, Gura-san reached one, two, and three million subscribers within a year of her debut,
1:17:24 and gained fans from all over the world! I would guess you wouldn't have expected it to go like that, right?
1:17:32 You're right. You know, I personally talked to all of them before their debut.
1:17:37 But we didn't predict anything like that. Gura's a monster, isn't she? A monster of the VTuber world.
1:17:46 I guess you could say anyone who watches her will find her cute. Certainly.
1:17:52 The first thing out of her mouth was legendary, too. True. "a" is legendary. Yes.
1:18:02 a And then there was the unexpected love for Yamashita Tatsurou-san.
1:18:11 Right, right! That kind of reeled in the Japanese folks. The older guys.
1:18:16 True. That'll get the older guys. I really love Gura-chan's Japanese learning streams.
1:18:23 Ohh! Ah, the streams where she studies! Yeah! That one. I watch like "Oh, you were close!"
1:18:31 It's really fun. It makes you want to root for her, right? Yeah. And to further increase the name recognition of hololive English,
1:18:39 in July, Project: HOPE VSinger IRyS-san debuted, and in August, the Council group debuted.
1:18:47 Hakos-san, looking back at your debut, how did you feel? To tell the truth,
1:18:53 I don't really have many memories from around my debut! No memory! None?! Why is that?
1:19:01 I mean, isn't a debut unforgettable? What I do remember is that I hadn't slept for two days.
1:19:07 And the only other thing is that I think I felt more nervous than I'd ever felt in my life.
1:19:17 Well, that's to be expected. True. Actually, Council's debut was delayed by a day.
1:19:25 I was like, "It's finally tomorrow! I wanna debut already!" And that's when we got the message saying,
1:19:33 "Your debut has been moved from tomorrow to the next day."
1:19:38 It got delayed! So your tension was drawn out. After I got the message,
1:19:45 I was like, "Guess I'm not sleeping tonight either." Really!
1:19:50 Well, it's good that you didn't collapse. Yeah. I debuted safely! That's good!
1:19:56 That's all you can ask for. And for Ina'nis-san, this meant you gained junior members.
1:20:02 Did this change your mindset at all? Senpai!
1:20:07 Oh, nice. I don't think you've actually ever called me senpai before now, Bae-chan.
1:20:16 Oh, really? Huh? Sure I have!
1:20:21 But overseas, we don't really have the senpai/kouhai thing. Oh, yeah!
1:20:26 It felt like I just got more friends. From my point of view,
1:20:32 it seems that hololive surprisingly does keep its relationship hierarchy pretty proper, though. Like, I'll call my JP senpai "senpai" as you would expect,
1:20:41 but among the EN members, we kinda forego the senpai stuff and just get along.
1:20:46 I see! So it's like friendship, I guess? Oh, okay. That's right!
1:20:52 I mean, having that difference might be a good thing! Yeah!
1:20:59 That's the way hololive English does things. Now then, let's go back to the history chart!
1:21:05 Next up is 3rd fes. in March of this year where Myth appeared in 3D!
1:21:11 Cute! Cute! Cute.
1:21:19 This song is really listenable.
1:21:25 Cute! Yeah, cute! She's good at singing in Japanese. It's so good, it's like any other Japanese song.
1:21:33 You've got your work cut out for you, Sora-san. Oh, here are we. I've gotta study Japanese, too.
1:21:41 It's all good. Cute!
1:21:46 Ame-chan's Japanese is cute. Her dance was so cute! It is.
1:21:59 Oh ho... Oh my.
1:22:06 Pretty! Oh me, oh my...
1:22:13 This is embarrassing. It's great. The only thing that comes to mind is "beautiful."
1:22:19 I'll say. Here we are.
1:22:24 Calli-chan! She's a really good singer. She really is.
1:22:30 You know, having a member who can rap, that's something we didn't really have before. It was impressive.
1:22:37 She gives off a more of a cool vibe to me comparatively.
1:22:48 Here she is! Her dancing is so cool. I've watched this a lot.
1:22:54 She's a really good dancer. You're all so amazing.
1:23:02 You really do dance well. They do. There it is!
1:23:07 What a show! Great! Great!
1:23:13 The response to the 3D reveal of the EN members was a good one, wasn't it, Ina'nis-san?
1:23:18 We wanted to show everybody, and we had waited for it,
1:23:24 but to finally be able to show it off at the concert made me happy. That's great. Wonderful. Calliope-san also had a solo concert in Japan.
1:23:32 That's right! Yes. And she's also done many 3D collabs with JP talents,
1:23:37 so I would say she's using her 3D well. I see.
1:23:42 Y'know, this is bad news for entertainers like us. They're gonna take our jobs!
1:23:47 Leave us some scraps, will ya? Just a few. A little bit.
1:23:53 Really. Next, in June, Gura-san reached four million subscribers.
1:24:01 That's insane. Congratulations! How amazing! Wow! You could call that a feat among feats, wouldn't you say?
1:24:10 Indeed. I really do think that it's quite a feat. Quite so.
1:24:17 Up until then, there hadn't been a VTuber who had reached four million subscribers. None, eh?
1:24:23 So that means right now, Gura-san is #1 in the world? #1 in the world. That's correct.
1:24:28 #1 in the world?! Four million! Before our debut, we didn't think we'd get this many fans.
1:24:38 Oh, I see. It makes us want to work harder going forward.
1:24:45 So are the folks from EN and ID going to appear on hologra? I want to see that!
1:24:51 We're going to consider that. Please! Please and thank you! Yeah. Sorry, I think we just made more work for you, YAGOO-san.
1:25:02 A few moments later... Where'd you pick up that Japanese? Shibuya! Ninomae Ina'nis-san and Gura-san have already made their hologra debuts!
1:25:08 I miss land. Heh. Check out this cosplayer trying to keep the setting alive. Check them out on the official YouTube channel Captain!
1:25:13 Speak. There's something out there! With the hololive English and hololive Indonesia members,
1:25:20 our productions continue reaching around the world. We are currently focusing our energies on projects
1:25:30 that we hope will delight our fans around the world! And that is...?
1:25:36 There are events that take place worldwide relating to anime and manga.
1:25:42 And the ID and EN talents primarily are making guest appearances there. Additionally, we're running booths for hololive production and participating in these events.
1:25:53 Wow. Wow! These are in the USA, Germany, Australia, Canada; many different countries.
1:26:00 That's right. hololive belongs to the world. And just what is this photo?
1:26:05 This world's gone crazy. A bunch of people cosplaying hololive members gathered here,
1:26:16 and I believe this big print-out of my head was their landmark. A landmark?! So it's a landmark.
1:26:22 A landmark. It looks like you're being worshipped. It's like you're really popular with everyone taking pics like that. Wow.
1:26:30 He's the top idol, that's why. Oh? That's right! You're the top idol?
1:26:35 He's a true idol! A true idol? The real deal. We'll be taking part in more events around the world, so stay tuned!
1:26:47 You might even be able to meet top idol YAGOO!
1:26:54 Looking back on HOLOSTARS's history Our next guests are Arurandeisu-san from HOLOSTARS 1st Gen
1:27:02 and Yukoku Roberu-san from the 2nd Gen. Thank you for joining us!
1:27:07 Thanks for having us! Could you please introduce yourselves?
1:27:15 Hi. I'm Arurandeisu from HOLOSTARS 1st Gen, also known as the Dandy Italian. Nice to meet you!
1:27:23 A dandy Italian. I'm a dandy Italian. A dandy Italian. Thank you.
1:27:30 I'm Yukoku Roberu from HOLOSTARS 2nd Gen! Nice to meet you!
1:27:38 Now you, Masanori-san. HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU!
1:27:43 I got to see it in real life! I'm so glad you like it!
1:27:50 The EN members just gave him a blank stare. It's great to get a reaction like this.
1:27:55 Makes things more fun. Thank you. Nice one, Hasegawa-san!
1:28:01 Let's keep momentum going! Starting off with the creation of HOLOSTARS. Creation of the male VTuber group "HOLOSTARS"
1:28:09 What made you decide to start a male VTuber group, YAGOO-san?
1:28:15 We as a company want to give many people the opportunity to become a VTuber,
1:28:25 and we heard from many people that they want to see or even become a male VTuber,
1:28:32 which is why we decided to create the group. I see. Arurandeisu-san, you debuted as part of the 1st Gen.
1:28:41 How did you feel at the time? Well, HOLOSTARS barely got any attention back then.
1:28:52 It had only just gotten started, so I felt motivated to make it a success.
1:29:02 I see, I see. Sora-san, what's your impression of HOLOSTARS?
1:29:07 I'm curious about that too. Makes you curious, right? At first, I was surprised that we were getting a male group.
1:29:15 I would've never expected that. I watched their debut streams,
1:29:22 and Miyabi-kun and Izuru-kun made a very... frantic impression.
1:29:30 That's, well... You're right on that. They had an incredible amount of pressure on them.
1:29:36 But the guys who came after them a little later, including Arurandeisu-san, were much more composed,
1:29:43 so I thought it made for a nice balance when they were all together. We only had girls up to that point,
1:29:50 so with the guys joining in, I felt the dawn of a new day,
1:29:55 and we could get even more people interested in VTubers.
1:30:01 That thought made me super happy. You're right. When I first saw Arurandeisu-san,
1:30:07 I also thought he was easygoing. It seemed like he didn't know he was supposed to be an idol.
1:30:16 Hey! You're absolutely right! Why would you say that?! It's true. No no no! How did Arurandeisu-san end up joining HOLOSTARS?
1:30:25 I'm not sure I should say this with Sora-senpai sitting right next to me... Don't say anything stupid, will you?!
1:30:32 If it gets too bad, please edit it out. No problem. What would it be?
1:30:38 I didn't know about VTubers at the time. Oh, you didn't?
1:30:44 And this is going to sound insulting, but I also didn't know about hololive. I'd never heard of all these groups and companies,
1:30:51 and then I suddenly got this invitation. Like, "Hey! You wanna be an idol?"
1:30:58 "You wanna be an idol?" And I went, "Why yes, that sounds interesting."
1:31:03 So you got scouted? Yes, I suppose you could say it like that.
1:31:10 We indeed recruited the 1st Gen through auditions and scouting.
1:31:19 Roberu-san, did you join through an audition, then? For me, it was also closer to scouting than an audition.
1:31:31 And by now, you've become everyone's plaything, haven't you? Please don't.
1:31:37 I knew someone was going to say that. Plaything... I somehow ended up in that position.
1:31:45 You do a lot of collaborations though, don't you, Roberu-san? I do. I always enjoyed talking with people after all.
1:31:53 I like chatting with the other HOLOSTARS members, of course, but also with people from outside the company.
1:31:58 I hope to spread the word about HOLOSTARS that way.
1:32:04 Speaking of collaborations, Arurandeisu-san, I'd like to see more of your bar streams.
1:32:09 Ah, Izakaya ARN. Yes, Izakaya ARN. I love watching that. Ah, thank you.
1:32:15 As I mentioned before, I had no clue about VTubers when I joined.
1:32:24 So I came up with a way to meet and talk to all kinds of people in this sphere. I figured it would give me valuable experience and help me grow into my role.
1:32:33 I think it's a great idea. And it fits you to a T. Ah, thank you.
1:32:38 From HOLOSTARS 1st to 3rd Gen, they all took part in the "HOLOSTARS 1st Anniversary Celebration Stream"!
1:32:44 How was it? Your first anniversary. I'm not sure why, but in that anniversary stream,
1:32:51 we got together in a sports hall for some reason. They called us there.
1:32:56 We held a quiz about the members who had joined during that year
1:33:04 to get to know each other better. We did.
1:33:10 That's what it was like. From March 2021, the official HOLOSTARS show
1:33:17 "Wacha-Wacha HOLOSTARS" started airing! Wacha-Wacha HOLOSTARS gets some high profile guests.
1:33:28 Like comedians, or Super Mystery Magazine Mu's editor-in-chief.
1:33:35 Or the rapper Koperu-san from Umeda Cypher. We invite these incredibly famous people
1:33:42 and make incredibly silly videos with them. That's great.
1:33:49 That leaves a deep impression. What on Earth did you do with Mu's editor-in-chief on the show?
1:33:54 We talked about UFOs, urban legends, youkai stories, stuff like that.
1:34:03 You love UFOs too, don't you, Masanori-san? Yes, I love UFOs and cryptids. He's been staring at the sky all the time recently.
1:34:10 I wondered if he was being summoned home. I'm an Earthling, okay?
1:34:16 That's what I am. Leaving aside Hasegawa-san, who might be an alien,
1:34:21 the HOLOSTARS 2nd Anniversary event was held on June 2021! HOLOSTARS 2nd anniversary event "Our Rally"
1:34:27 We were split across the three days of that event, with the days themed after Past, Present, and Future respectively.
1:34:35 So we looked back on all that'd happened and talked about what we wanted to do going forward.
1:34:45 The first anniversary stream was, like,
1:34:51 "HOLOSTARS came together and did what they could with what they had." But for the second anniversary event, we booked a venue.
1:34:59 Well, given the timing, we couldn't really organize an all-out offline event, but for us,
1:35:05 it was a new and valuable experience performing in such a large venue. That's great.
1:35:10 You're all growing up.
1:35:15 They are. In such a short time, too. That's amazing.
1:35:23 HOLOSTARS rapidly grew from their 2nd anniversary, and they held their first concert in December!
1:35:32 Here is some footage from the event. Whoa, look at all those people.
1:35:39 This takes you back, right? Oh, it's the start of the show.
1:35:45 This is unforgettable, right? I'm getting goosebumps just from watching it!
1:35:51 This part was great, the moment we all looked up. I know, right? The spectacle in front of us was crazy.
1:35:57 It still feels amazing even now, right? I'm raising my hand too.
1:36:03 Of course you are. You sure are. You bet I am.
1:36:09 Straight up. This must've been moving.
1:36:16 We did our best for the dance, too. We practiced this!
1:36:23 Man, this takes me back. Heck, I could pull it off now if I tried. Yeah.
1:36:29 It's a while ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
1:36:35 I still have the image behind my eyes. Not behind your eyelids?
1:36:40 Behind my eyes. All the way in the back.
1:36:49 This is great. We got to see our lovely fans.
1:36:57 Did we really do this? We sure did. Man, look at us.
1:37:04 We'd never had a whole crowd cheer us on in person, right?
1:37:09 We hadn't. Whoa, this takes me back...
1:37:17 It's really touching. It's amazing. I know it's us and all, but...
1:37:25 Wow... That was really cool!
1:37:31 Did this concert leave a strong impression on you too, YAGOO-san? It really did. I was there in person during the concert.
1:37:40 I knew just how hard they all worked to get to this point.
1:37:45 So, it really touched me. That's great to hear! Male VTubers generally mess around a lot, don't they?
1:37:56 They goof around with each other and get bullied, and that would be their main selling point.
1:38:06 But when they show their proper side as idols like this... How they're able to do both sides of the coin brings makes for a huge impact.
1:38:16 That's how I see it. That's a great point.
1:38:21 They show it when they need to. Our CEO looks real pleased by that!
1:38:28 We head into 2022! HOLOSTARS' 3D anime "stars*collection" makes its start!
1:38:38 Right, so our older sisters at hololive have a show called hologra.
1:38:43 We thought it'd be great if we could have our own version in the future, as well. And now we've finally reached that.
1:38:49 Everyone has received their own 3D models. It feels like we've fulfilled one of our dreams.
1:38:57 It feels like we were finally able to do things we had planned for. I see! So, the senpai at hololive are like older sisters to you guys at HOLOSTARS?
1:39:06 I do call them that often. Yeah, like older sisters. I tend to call them my elder sisters a lot.
1:39:12 Even those that debuted after me at hololive are elder sisters to me. Oh, really?
1:39:18 That's what I call them generally. Your comedian side really suddenly showed.
1:39:24 It's probably because of that, yes! I think that's what it is.
1:39:30 And after 2 years, HOLOSTARS' debuted their newest group, UPROAR!!
1:39:36 What kind of juniors are they to you, Arurandeisu-san and Roberu-san? They're really fresh! Fresh?
1:39:42 Just as you'd expect. By this point, we'd already been around for two or even three years.
1:39:47 Just when everyone has their view of how we are as VTubers and HOLOSTARS...
1:39:54 The new group UPROAR!! It's a real refresher! Everyone really has their own quirks, don't they?
1:40:01 That's true. They have skills that our members then didn't have,
1:40:06 and they're comprised of members who can do things that we couldn't as HOLOSTARS.
1:40:14 They're like friendly rivals to us. Of course it's not just us being motivated.
1:40:21 We help each other in times of need and motivate one another. And that lets us improve each other as we go.
1:40:32 UPROAR!! is airing their official show "Jump UPROAR!!", which started in July.
1:40:41 And this year marks HOLOSTARS' 3rd year anniversary with HOLOSTARS' 3RISE Super Fan Meeting Flagship being held.
1:40:51 It looks like it was a variety event where the audience could participate. How did that go?
1:40:56 Right, so after our concert event, our theme was to connect with our viewers through a variety event.
1:41:06 It was an event where the audience could join in. We had a bunch of segments lined up.
1:41:11 I see! We did segments that people who attended in person and those who watched through the live stream could both enjoy.
1:41:20 That's great to hear! I believe this was the first live variety event as well, if I remember correctly?
1:41:27 That's right! We got the nine HOLOSTARS together and held a 3D variety event.
1:41:35 Even the flow of the event itself was created from the ground up entirely by the management and ourselves.
1:41:44 So when it all came to fruition, it felt great. So, that was our look back at HOLOSTARS from their forming to present day.
1:41:51 What did you think? It puts into perspective how many different things we've been able to do,
1:41:57 and how we've really received a lot of support. It really makes us feel glad to have come this far.
1:42:03 Time really flew by, looking back on these three years. We've really done a whole lot from concerts to variety streams.
1:42:12 We're able to experience and do all these new things because of hololive production.
1:42:21 I really think that every day, especially when we have huge events.
1:42:27 What is CEO Tanigo's expectations for HOLOSTARS?
1:42:34 Well... They have all truly been working hard every day.
1:42:40 They've honed their strengths and reached where they are now. I believe it'd be fantastic if they keep on growing from here on, as well.
1:42:50 We'll do our best! Thank you! He seems to have great expectations. Well, it makes us want to do our best!
1:42:59 I always think that it's good to not be complacent. I believe it's good to keep setting our goals and aims higher.

1:43:51 Looking back on HOLOSTARS English -TEMPUS-'s history For our next guest...
1:43:56 From HOLOSTARS English's TEMPUS, We have here Axel Syrios! Thank you for joining us!
1:44:02 Thank you for coming! Hello, thanks for having me here!
1:44:07 Nice to meet you, I'm from HOLOSTARS English. I'm Guild TEMPUS' Gladiator, Axel Syrios!
1:44:13 Thanks for having me. His Japanese is really good!
1:44:20 Thank you very much! HELLOOO TO YOOOUUU!
1:44:25 Hello to you too. Thank you very much. I apologize for the nuisance.
1:44:31 Sorry for suddenly raising my voice like that at you. Oh, no worries. Thank you very much. I'm just glad you're enjoying yourself!
1:44:37 Thanks! I'm all about being cheerful! HOLOSTARS English,
1:44:42 is a VTuber group geared towards English-speaking fans like hololive English! Axel-san is here to talk about his debut in holoTEMPUS!
1:44:52 What type of group is holoTEMPUS, Axel-san? Yep, so like...
1:44:59 TEMPUS is our adventurer guild's name. I see!
1:45:04 Guild TEMPUS has four members at the moment, and each one of us holds our own position in the guild.
1:45:12 Like I mentioned in my introduction, I am the gladiator of the group.
1:45:17 I see! You seem like the most trouble, Axel-san.
1:45:24 Oh, can you tell? Yeah. Not to judge a book by its cover, though.
1:45:31 You totally hit the mark. Did I?! He's on the mark? The naughty kid.
1:45:37 You do seem like the naughtiest kid of the bunch. The CEO'S thoughts on TEMPUS?
1:45:48 Among all the hololive English debuts, I thought it'd be interesting to see a male VTuber group
1:45:57 that would appeal to even a male audience with their synergy as a brotherhood.
1:46:05 On top of being enjoyable for women, as well. Male VTubers for male watchers, huh?
1:46:11 That's right. I see, I see! Or so YAGOO-san says, but what do you think, Axel-san?
1:46:18 Yep, so like... How do I put it...? We're really more like a group that crushes YAGOO-san's dreams.
1:46:29 What's up with that? We're a lot more like brothers than we are idols.
1:46:37 Oh, how nice. Yep, so it's really like... We're just a group overflowing with individuality.
1:46:44 I'm really glad to be a member of this group. I feel that every day when I talk to them too.
1:46:53 The holoTEMPUS members have great personalities. What does Sora think of them?
1:47:01 When I first saw the teaser video... It said that they were an adventurer's guild.
1:47:08 I really love things like adventurers and those sorts! I was super envious like, "Oh wow, must be nice!"
1:47:14 Really now? That was my first impression. And also...
1:47:20 It was also the first time a group of male talents was debuting for EN. I was curious to know what kind of debut they would have.
1:47:29 I was interested in what their debut streams would be like! Then when it happened,
1:47:36 their talking skills were so good that you wouldn't believe that it was their first day!
1:47:42 People from an adventurer's guild sure are on a different level! And his Japanese is really good too!
1:47:48 We wouldn't hear "yep, so like...", otherwise! Yep! It's impressive.
1:47:53 Yep! holoTEMPUS only recently made their debut! Don't miss watching them grow!
1:48:02 So, that was a look back at hololive production's five-year history.
1:48:07 And what an eventful five years it was! Truly incredible. It sure was! What did you think, Sora-san?
1:48:14 Well, at first... I thought I'd have plenty of time to talk during this show,
1:48:22 but it wasn't enough at all, there was so much to talk about! Right. It really drove home just how much
1:48:29 has happened these past five years. That's for sure. Plus, I don't often get to hear from the non-JP members...
1:48:38 Oh, I see. So it was a rare and exciting opportunity to hear about... Yeah.
1:48:44 ...the stories behind everyone's debuts in the other branches. It was a wonderful experience for us, as well.
1:48:53 Thank you for the opportunity. How about you, YAGOO-san? Thank you for coming! I mean, you're the one who started it all.
1:49:00 Well, now that I look back on it all, it really was a jam-packed five years.
1:49:05 No kidding! So incredible. At the same time, it reminded me of our early growing pains...
1:49:14 I don't mean to sound patronizing, but nicely done getting this far in five years.
1:49:21 Well, it's all thanks to the tireless efforts of the talents, staff, and everyone involved.
1:49:28 That's never been clearer. How about you, Masanori-san? Well, we got to see some footage from the concerts, right?
1:49:37 And everyone was like, "That's so nostalgic!" I'm thinking, "Nostalgic? That was only two or three years ago!"
1:49:46 If they're already feeling nostalgic about it, that just goes to show how much has happened since then. For sure.
1:49:51 Their days are so full of different experiences that even two years ago feels nostalgic.
1:49:58 Seriously, all you hololive members, please get some sleep. We sleep plenty, I promise!
1:50:04 Take care of your health! Both talents and staff members, be sure to get enough sleep. We worry about you! You'll worry us.
1:50:10 With all you do... Yeah. Lastly, I believe Sora-san has some announcements.
