"I wish we had more time," you sighed.

She looked slightly guilty as she broke eye contact, looking down at her hands. The two of you sat in silence for a few seconds.

"About that..." she replied.

"Ah."

You had always had your suspicions - she always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. She had saved your life several times too, pulling you out of the way of a falling object, saving you from traffic incidents by meer seconds. In fact, that was how the two of you had met. As you stepped out of your office after work, you had nearly been run over by a truck - and you would have, had she not pulled you out of the way. The two of you had often joked about death having it out for you, and you wondered now if that was true too.

"Was it... real?" you asked.

"I always let you choose," she said. "No matter how much it hurts sometimes."

"Is it always you?"

She smiled. "Not always."

"And what about you?"

"I can't move on. I've tried. Hundreds of thousands of times. Millions, maybe. I lost count long ago. I keep coming back to you."

"Then tell me. About us."

You brushed the hair out of her eyes with the back of your hand, then rested your palm on her cheek.

"It's not fair if only you get to remember," you said.

She gently grabbed your hand and closed her eyes.

"I'll show you instead," she replied, as a clock materialized behind her, its hands accelerating backwards. When she opened her eyes, rather than the usual dark brown, they were a stunning shade of blue.

You saw an uncountable number of lifetimes flash past your eyes. The first time she met you, when she had tried to stop herself from interfering, but found herself unable to - and the resulting chaos that she had taken care of behind the scenes. You felt the pain she did, with each partner you had as your heart was broken, as well as the bittersweet happiness when you found another love - even if it wasn't her. Above all else, the love she felt for you each life, each time she came back to see you. In the end, she was destined to be alone forever, but with you, she had never once felt it.

"I wouldn't mind if you showed up a little sooner," you said, at the end of it all.

"I'll think about it," she giggled. "If I find you too early, you're a real handful sometimes."

"I guess I'll see you soon then."

Your eyelids felt heavier than usual. Or maybe you were just blinded by the dazzling figure beside you. You chuckled to yourself. She'd like that. Maybe you could save it for next time.
