Scour's Survey Says...

How would your build introduce themselves to the class? What would they say? What would be going through their mind as they introduce them to their new classmates?

Isao remains stoic as he stares on ahead at the board and his sister's energetic introduction, jaw clenching.

Hard act to follow. And she didn't even erase the bunnies on the chalkboard...

"A-HEM! AHHH-HEM!" Loudly clearing his throat, Isao's arms cross behind his back as he gives an energetic and full-chested greeting to the class, bouncing up on the balls of his feet before settling down.

"GOOD MORNING, CLASS!"

He pauses for a moment, before realizing he isn't here to do roll call, and stops waiting for an answer back as he proceeds. "For those of you who don't know it, my name is Mitarai Isao. Acceptable substitutes are Mitarai-kun and my planned Hero name, should the faculty approve: Scour."

The chalk beats against the board with academic fervor, neatly recording his name just by his sister's before he grabs a thick eraser to clean up her mess. Not the first time he's done so, and it won't be the last.

... he erases the little doodle of Wash with an excess of harsh, short motions.

"I look forward to a productive and steady school life with all present as we become pure, true Heroes! However, I expect many of you have questions for me. It's only natural, so allow me to get them out of the way."

Isao turns back around, slapping his hand against the chalkboard once and setting the various items resting on the lip below it a-rattlin'.

"One: no, the helmet will not be coming off, as per article 44 corollary 162 in the school handbook."

"Two: yes, as my sister Atsuko just said, #4 Pro Hero Wash is my father." Even just saying Wash's name sounded like pulling teeth from Isao, a laborious and grimacing process. "No, you can't get an autograph."

"And finally, three: many of you may be wondering how serious about all of this I am. If I truly endeavor to make our shared time together better, with your best interests in mind. To that, all I say is..."

Isao folds his arms in front of him, staring unwaveringly back at the class' gaze on him and standing firm in a masculine pose.

"I'm the real deal! If anyone has any further questions or concerns, please, reach out to me after class!"

With that, he strides forward, stiffly lowering back into his front row seat, making sure to watch the other students' introductions attentively.

What is a hero to you? What drives you to be a hero? Are there any heroes that you look up to? If not, what are your criticisms of the world of heroes?

If you asked most anyone, they would reply that a Hero is a pretty face parading around on TV advertisements and battlegrounds alike. They'd be mentioned in the same breath as celebrities, movie stars and the ultra-wealthy, flaunting their quirks for public good only as another avenue to show off. Show dogs for a new age.

I want to become a Hero to change this.

The current system of Heroes, though well intentioned and suited for the early years of the superhuman society we now live in, has become a bloated, corrupt, unwieldy behemoth that cannot respond agilely to the problems of the current day. These days, the greatest threats to Heroes come from within the system (see the Reaper and Asset incidents[1][2]) rather than without, and why wouldn't it? Heroes represent a high concentration of both material wealth and status, incentivizing those with less than pure intentions to infiltrate the system rather than blindly fight against it.

However, this coin has two sides. Underground heroes who have decided to forgoe the spotlight and pageantry of the Hero rankings possess a greater understanding of the risks at stake, and I truly admire them as the model for the system of Heroes I hope to one day chart our current one towards.

One person alone is insufficient. I am well aware of my limits. However, if I can inspire enough people, and they in turn inspire others, perhaps things can changeforthebetter.

Ah... he ran out of space.

How do you feel about certain homeroom teachers taking five-minute smoke breaks?

Absolutely not! Smoking's deleterious effects are well-reproduced in research by this point[3], and entirely besides that, it sets a terrible example before the students of the renowned Shiketsu hero academy. Cigarette addiction is a disease, and I would see it cured rather than merely tolerated.

Which of your fellow classmates do you think you'll get along with the best, and which do you think the worst? Don't forget why! This will not change your seating arrangement.

Atsuko Splash and Second Son, as the two classmates I've gotten to know best so far, deserve a special mention as the ones I believe I will have the highest degree of success in getting along with. I have been at Splash's side for so long that I can reasonably predict what she'll do next with a 50% probability, which may not sound like much until you get to know her. Second Son is a soundly different case as my roommate, but his heart is as vast as the sea and I believe with all of my chest that he has the makings of an extraordinarily pure and true hero... if only he can get over his tendency to simply suffer in silence.

But I won't be stopping there!

I have full intentions of befriending each and every single member of my class throughout the course of this year. After collating brief psychological profiles on each of them, I intend on staying vigilant for the slightest hint of bullying or any other unacceptable behaviors, and am willing and able to extend a hand to those feeling like they're falling back or falling between the cracks.

As such, I believe my teamwork with everyone will be unparalleled, and I'm confident they all feel precisely the same way about me.

How do you feel about your quirk? Do you enjoy using it? Do you dislike it? Is there anything about it you would change? What about fighting? How do you feel about fighting? With or without your quirk? How does it make you feel to engage in fisticuffs with another being?

I believe flexibility is the greatest asset my quirk presents, being useful in rescue, evacuation, and combat work alike.

Fighting is of course a critical component of Hero work, with 93% of interviewed non-sidekick Heroes reporting that they engaged in some level of combat over the previous year of work[4]. However, this may change over time, as despite a recent spike, violent crimes have been on a significant downwards trend since the warlord days[5] on top of the total amount of crimes halted by Heroes lessening in general.

Still, I am both ready and willing for combat training, despite having little experience in it. I see it as a simple necessity of the occupation I've chosen, and nothing more. My quirk allows for incliment terrain that can halt others as well as a method to repel them, but I have not yet plumbed the depths it may offer due to the aforementioned inexperience.

If you were to schedule your perfect day tomorrow, what would it look like?

Every day I spend working towards becoming a purer Hero is my perfect day already.

Therefore, this is tomorow's schedule.

Isao proceeds to list out his mundane plans for the day tomorrow, from mealtimes to class schedule to his workout routine, down to the last minute.

What is your most cherished memory? Did you share it with others? Or was it in a moment of quiet introspection? How did it affect you as a person? Is it painful to look back on now?

It happened when I was very young. Young enough that Splash likely doesn't remember. As a child, I never shared her enthusiasm for Heroes and idols. As a matter of fact, I wanted to be a doctor, and often pored over medical magazines.

I'd been up late reading. My father came home from work, before any of the big sponsorships or brand deals came in, absolutely battered. Bruises everywhere, scuffs on his normally pristine suit, one eye half-swollen-shut, but he was ecstatic. He'd saved more than two dozen people from a villain attack and brought down the man responsible in one swoop.

He sat me on his knee and gave me an entire play-by-play of the fight, from beginning to end, and had a glow in his eyes as he talked about each civilian he'd saved as I listened in rapt attention.

The next morning, the incident didn't even make the news, but I didn't care. I'd finally been bitten by the hero bug.

Naturally, Isao makes sure to hand-write out all of his footnote citations on the back of the paper. APA format, of course.
