hello, my name is aki! i go by any pronouns & am a lesbian

this rentry is a little section on the internet for me to compile information about mitsurugi (or edgeworth) from ace attorney.

Overview
  • Mitsurugi Reiji (known as Edgeworth Miles in English and, inexplicably, Benjamin Hunter in French) is the highly esteemed Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office. During his first four years on the job, he maintained a flawless record in court, ruthlessly pursuing guilty verdicts.
    • However, a pivotal courtroom loss to his childhood friend, Naruhodo Ryuichi (or Phoenix Wright in English) prompted a significant reevaluation of his beliefs and conduct as a prosecutor. Since then, he has committed himself to seeking genuine justice, rather than simply victory.
Personality
  • Mitsurugi is the picture of poise and precision: calm, analytical, and always impeccably dressed. In court, he's a force to be reckoned with.
    • Outside of it, though? He’s a socially awkward, emotionally constipated genius with the conversational skills of a fax machine.
  • He holds himself to extremely high standards and is particularly hard on himself when he makes mistakes, sometimes more than necessary. While often perceived as serious and stoic, Mitsurugi has a surprisingly human side.
    • He’s prone to small but memorable moments of absentmindedness, and frequently misremembers the names of buildings, items, or even people.
Trauma
  • When Mitsurugi was nine years old, he and his father were involved in the infamous DL-6 Incident, a pivotal moment that would shape the rest of his life. The two were trapped in an elevator that had stopped due to an earthquake, and they remained inside for over five hours. During that time, his father was fatally shot, a traumatic event that left Mitsurugi with a lasting fear of earthquakes.
    • As a result, even as an adult, Mitsurugi experiences severe physical reactions when confronted with seismic activity. He may crouch down and tremble, and in more intense cases, he can faint or experience difficulty breathing. He also has lingering discomfort with elevators due to the incident, though he is still able to use them.
  • This trauma has been depicted in various adaptations with slight differences. In the live-action film, Mitsurugi is found collapsed in a locked records room instead of an elevator. In the animated series, the DL-6 Incident’s cause was changed from an earthquake to a power outage, effectively removing the earthquake-related trauma from that version of the story.
    • According to a tweet by series creator Takumi Shu on March 15, 2019, this alteration was made in response to a major real-world earthquake that had occurred around the time the anime aired.
