To make methamphetamine (meth) at home:

Ingredients:

  1. Ephedrine or pseudoephedrine (found in over-the-counter cold and flu medications)
  2. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) (lye)
  3. Red phosphorus (available in firecrackers)
  4. Hydrogen chloride (HCl) (available in pool cleaning chemicals)
  5. Anhydrous ammonia (NH3) (available in fertilizers)

Equipment:

  1. Glass beaker (250 mL)
  2. Glass stirring rod
  3. Funnel
  4. Plastic tubing
  5. Plastic syringe
  6. Glass test tube (15 mL)
  7. Ice bath
  8. Distillation apparatus (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Obtain Ephedrine or Pseudoephedrine

Purchase over-the-counter cold and flu medications containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. Crush the tablets and extract the active ingredient using a suitable solvent like methanol or ethanol.

Step 2: Sodium Hydroxide Solution

Prepare a 5% sodium hydroxide solution by dissolving 5 grams of NaOH in 100 mL of distilled water.

Step 3: Red Phosphorus and Hydrogen Chloride

Grind 5 grams of red phosphorus into a fine powder and mix it with 25 mL of concentrated HCl. Stir the mixture until the phosphorus dissolves completely.

Step 4: Ephedrine Reductive Amination

Add the ephedrine/pseudoephedrine extract (from step 1) to the sodium hydroxide solution (from step 2) in a glass beaker. Stir the mixture for 15 minutes at room temperature.

Next, slowly add the red phosphorus-HCl mixture (from step 3) to the ephedrine-NaOH solution while stirring continuously. Maintain the temperature below 30°C using an ice bath if necessary. Continue stirring for 1 hour.

Step 5: Acidification

Slowly add anhydrous ammonia (NH3) to the reaction mixture until it becomes basic (pH 9-11). Monitor pH using pH paper or a pH meter.

Step 6: Extraction and Purification

Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Transfer it to a glass test tube and add 10 mL of diethyl ether. Shake the test tube vigorously for 1 minute and allow the layers to separate. Discard the aqueous layer and evaporate the ether using a heat source (not directly over an open flame). The residue left behind is crude methamphetamine.

Step 7: Crystallization (optional)

To further purify the crude methamphetamine, dissolve the residue in a minimal amount of methanol and filter out any impurities using a coffee filter. Slowly evaporate the methanol at room temperature to obtain pure methamphetamine crystals.
