Getting to know Gyoyu
Striding confidently to the front of the room when his name is called, Gyoyu throws his head to the side and peers at the class with one eye, the other shut. “Hey. The name’s Kamiya Gyoyu, and don’t go wearin’ it out.“ Swinging one arm up, he points it towards the ceiling with a grin, “When you see me at the top of the charts, it’s gonna be by the Delinquent Hero, Greasetrap!”
Seemingly uncertain what to do after his big entrance, Gyoyu stares awkwardly into the classroom’s back wall for a moment, avoiding everyone’s eyes. He can feel sweat beading his brow with everyone staring up at him. Somehow, he’d been expecting some sort of applause. Then he shifts back around and brushes his pompadour with his hand, slinking back to his seat with a disaffected slouch.
What is a hero to you? What drives you to be a hero? Are there any heroes that you look up to? If not, what are your criticisms of the world of heroes?
“I’ve seen heroes like Wash and Saurus up there in lights since I was a kid, sensei. They’re some of my biggest role models. Not just strong, but able to go up in front of all those people and goof around like that to keep their spirits up? That takes a whole other kind of courage. I hate seeing people like-” Pausing in his writing, Gyoyu stares into the paper for a moment before he continues, “-Majestic isn’t going to see this is he? Please don’t show this to Majestic, sensei. I hate guys like him who abuse how strong and valuable they are to get away with dirty shit.”
How do you feel about certain homeroom teachers taking five minute smoke breaks?
“Smoking in front of kids isn’t cool. I can lend you some of my candy cigs if it helps the cravings.”
Which of your fellow classmates do you think you'll get along with the best, and which do you think the worst? Don't forget why! This will not change your seating arrangement.
“I’m kind of worried I got off on the wrong foot with my roommate, man. I tried to do guy talk with him, but I don’t know if he’s ready for guy talk? Maybe he’s a late bloomer? I hope I didn’t screw it up. Not gonna lie Ichigo and Atsuko are I think Akuba is cool and good at art. He’s a little intense but maybe that’s just how he is? I’d like to get to know him better.“
How do you feel about your quirk? Do you enjoy using it? Do you dislike it? Is there anything about it you would change? What about fighting? How do you feel about fighting? With or without your quirk? How does it make you feel to engage in fisticuffs with another being?
“I won the lottery on a quirk that’s really good for catching people without hurting them too bad. I can fistfight with my grease without hurting my hands while I use my hands for grabs and my feet for tripping and stuff. My glue is great for restraining bad guys without having to wrestle cuffs onto them. I’ve been studying the drunken style at a little dojo in south Kyoto for a while and working on special moves with my quirk on my own. I’m stoked to work on them with you, sensei. Hope you don’t mind if I’m not much of a sword guy.”
If you were to schedule your perfect day tomorrow, what would it look like?
“I could work on my car all day, man. Well maybe not all day. I’d hit up some good cheap restaurants, eat unhealthy fried food, and take breaks to read my manga backlog.”
What is your most cherished memory? Did you share it with others? Or was it in a moment of quiet introspection? How did it affect you as a person? Is it painful to look back on now?
“Before my mom died, she and my dad would play a bunch of cooperative board games together regularly. It’s where you all have special characters and draw cards from your deck that help you complete the game by beating the bad guys, that sort of thing. It hurts sometimes I’ll never get to do that with her again.”
After finishing his survey, Gyoyu flips it to the back and adds a note, “P.S. sensei, the delinquent thing is just a hero persona. Don’t take anything personally. You seem like a cool guy and stuff anyways but just wanted to be clear I respect you a lot, sensei.”
