Backstory
In a small fishing village in the Land of the Sea, a baby was named Nana because she was born in the summer.
Life was simple for her early childhood, but she was a little different from the other kids her age. Quieter, more observant, more standoffish. Not enough to bring anything more than a bit of teasing, but noticeable. Nana knew very little of the shinobi world, only rumors, whispers, and tales from the adults in the village.
The end of her peaceful life was announced by the loudest explosion she'd heard to that day. Pirates struck the village like men possessed, ripping out everything there was that could be lifted into their ship. Anyone that wasn't fighting back were chained up and thrown on board like they were just another piece of loot. Even then, the corpses of the ones that did were hauled inside as well and thrown in with them. Even Nana could tell they were desperate for some unknown reason. In the pirates' haste to loot and set sail, they made an oversight. The manacles on Nana's wrists weren't big enough to keep her small hands from slipping free. Spurred on by the fervent whispers of advice and encouragement from the villagers, Nana carried the weight of a potential uprising on her shoulders. If she could find the keys for the rest of them, a glimmer of hope remained.
It took all of her wits, her luck, and her determination to sneak around the pirate ship without being caught. Perhaps it was the agitated and despondent attitudes among the crew that made them less observant, but she was able to make it to the captain's quarters. In Nana's young mind, that was the most likely location of the keys. With the captain down below taking count of the spoils of their pillaging, this was her chance. But despite her efforts, there were no keys to be found. Getting more desperate every minute that went by, Nana knocked a scroll from the table to the floor with a loud clatter. She wanted to run and hide, but the unrolled scroll felt like it was physically grabbing her attention. When she put her hands on it, it was like she could hear whispers in her head, telling her that putting her blood on the paper would solve all of her problems. She should have been scared, but the words being whispered to her were like a soothing balm to her panicked heart. It was exactly what she wanted to hear. She could save her village, save her parents, all just for a little bit of blood.
She couldn't tell you how her thumb got cut, but by the time the pirate captain slammed open the door, she was already writing her name on the contract. An unfamiliar drain tugged at her insides, chakra she didn't know she had being sucked out of her and into the summoning scroll that was now releasing smoke from the edges. The contract was complete. What met Nana and the pirate captain was undoubtedly a demon, a creature with more eyes and mouths than she could count that introduced itself as Yamasha of the Jū Ni no Akutō, or the Twelve Bastards if you were friends. But this was no friend, it was a hellish nightmare. This power came with a cost, one that made Nana wish that she had never listened to that damned scroll.
One billion ryo. The signing cost, with the promise of more payments with every summon. It was an amount that stupefied the young girl. It was more than her entire family would have made over their entire lifetimes put together, and she was expected to pay this colossal debt within ten years. Before she could even think of skipping on the debt, she was shown in real time what would happen. The previous signer, the pirate captain, had just run out of time himself. The pirate captain tried pleading for more time, and when that didn't work he tried to fight back to no avail. As he put his hand to where his sword was, it was already gone. Since the captain didn't have the money, all of his possessions were being taken instead. His weapons, his treasures, the things he had pillaged were being sucked into the scroll. Nana couldn't even try to stop what she was seeing, frozen in place as the captain's "possessions" showed to include his crew, the people he had kidnapped, and even the ship under their feet. The people she knew her entire life, including her parents were dragged into that abyss right before her eyes. The only thing nearby that was spared that fate was Nana herself, since she had been freed from capture. As the floor gave away underneath her to be claimed by those demons, she watched as the last thing of the value the pirate captain had was ripped away from him as well, his soul.
She and that lifeless husk hit the ocean at the same time, and as one sank, the other was brought back to reality through her survival instincts. Land was more than a kilometer away, a long swim that she wasn't sure she'd be able to pull off against the tides. But even as strong as the need to return home was, there was nothing to return to. It was all gone, and she would be too. Even if she did make it back to Umigakure, was that even the right choice? It was a poor land, and even after a decade of pillaging, the pirate captain wasn't able to amass enough money to pay the debt that now hung over her. If she wanted to live... and maybe even get revenge for her friends and family, she had to go to where she could make money. Biting the bullet, Nana raised her debt and summoned transportation to the mainland. It wasn't until she reached the shore did she realize that the summoning contract had somehow been tucked into her clothes, still completely dry.
Nana wasn't equipped for this quest she had been forced to set out on. She lived in a place where money had little to do with everyday life, and thus had had no idea how to make it. Begging on the streets and offering to work could only go so far. It was less than drops in the bucket, and even when she got lucky enough to find someone who pitied her, whatever they gave her was more often than not stolen from her by more experienced thieves and stronger thugs. She was forced to let them take it. Sure, she could summon something to defend her, but what was the point of losing tens of thousands to save hundreds? This wasn't a viable way to live. She was surviving, but she needed to thrive.
The opportunity only came thanks to her observant nature. An older girl also clearly not from the area, but she didn't act like it. The way she talked to people, the way she acted, it was like she had known them for years. She was getting smiles and laughs out of people, and more miraculously, getting money out of them. Every flattering word, every subtle smile and deft hand was piled on in a way that got her a gift or a snatched wallet. In just a few minutes, she had gotten more money than Nana had in a week, and she made it look effortless. If Nana wasn't paying attention, she would have thought she was imagining it. She was everything Nana wasn't. She was charismatic, while Nana was a reserved quiet girl.
"I need to learn from her."
It took a lot of bothering, a lot of "please"es, and a lot of promises of future payments, but eventually Nana was able to convince that girl to take her with her on her travels to the Land of Fire. Momika, her new sensei.
Life had finally started to get better. Nana was starting to pick up on Momika's skills, and had another new goal in her mind. After hearing about how shinobi lived in the large villages, she had to imagine that skilled ninja were paid well. The leaders were all powerful, and surely even one of them had billions of ryo. She was still just a kid, but she needed to get strong too. Her best option for self defense were swords, as they could ward away the more timid crooks just by pointing the blades towards them.
She had a plan, she had a sense of security, she even had someone she could look up to for advice. Momika was impressing on the young girl, and despite the less than lawful nature of her lessons, she was becoming a rock to Nana.
When a mysterious letter arrived for Momika inviting her to attend the academy in Gestugakure, Nana wasn't going to leave things at that. Accompanying Momika all the way there, Nana practically barged her way into attending as well, invitation or no.
Personality
Nana is a stoic girl with a flat expression that is short with her words and naturally shies away from cheerful extroverted behavior, but she is trying to change that. To imitate her sensei Momika, she forces herself to speak and emote more often even when she doesn't have anything to say, leading to stilted speech and awkward silences as she blurts out whatever comes to mind. This typically ends with her getting embarrassed and leaving any more talking to others until she mentally recovers. If Momika is there, Nana is usually following her lead and trying to copy her.
With her outstanding debt following her, Nana is quick to grab money and hoard things she thinks could be valuable. She tends to take these things too far sometimes as well, instinctively wanting to go after impractically large targets, seeing them as worth more. Ironically taking after her summons' behavior, Nana is quick to put a price on favors, wanting to wring every ryo out of what she has. She is generally more of a follower than a leader, as her own attempts at making money in the past have only barely given her enough to feed herself. When it comes to authority, Nana looks to sensei Momika first, even when instructed by her teachers. She usually refers to teachers by name, reserving the sensei title for Momika.
She isn't naturally distrustful of others, she's even still a bit naive when it comes to reading intentions. But she has been told to not reveal the reason for her need for money lest she be taken advantage of, so she typically cites revenge as her reason for becoming a shinobi. Probing into it or trying to take something she's already set her sights on is a quick way to get her glaring at you, even if it won't lead to a direct confrontation. Otherwise, she's pretty difficult to get a rise out of, even if you mock her directly.
In combat, she usually favors defensive fighting, imbuing her weapons with earth chakra and deflecting attacks. Taking after her sensei, though, she has started to develop more underhanded ways of fighting, using her defenses as a shield until she can cause a misdirection or land a cheap shot. She isn't above kicking dirt into people's eyes, for example. She is loathe to use her summons as they all come with a heavy price point, but living in the future is more important than ryo now, so she'll use them when needed in combat or when a mission would call for it.
The Jū Ni no Akutō
Also known as the Twelve Bastards, they are a mismatched group of weaker demons, greedy spirits, and outcasts from animal clans that banded together over their shared vice. Money is everything to them, and the rich make the rules. Whoever has the most at the time is the unofficial "leader", but this title is swapped around so often that none of them could truly claim to be the one in charge. Trading, coercion, theft, and especially gambling are their main form of interaction with each other, with betting on their summoner's actions being the most favored between all of them.
Any who wish to sign a summoning contract with them should think twice, as the amount of debt it will put you in will force you to become the unofficial 13th Bastard in order to pay it off.
