First Impressions

• Maurer is a big, broad fellow with a stern face and serious presence. It is tempered, just a little, by his mortarboard hat.
• He speaks in a deep drawl, with precise enunciation.
• He is in formal dress even in ostensibly casual settings. (Ishgardian nobility understand him.)
• Wears a pair of corrective pince-nez on a chain to ensure they never fall all the way off. A fashion-conscious friend glamoured them to look red.
• Frowning to some degree or another, most of the time. Any additional facial expression tends to occur via eyebrows.
• Intimidatingly proper in his element. Rather stiff and stuffy outside of it.
• Smells like oud, books and funeral spice.

Heroic Biography || Multi-WoL AU

The professorial Dr. Hieronymus Maurer serves as a lynchpin among the Warriors of Light; he is the field commander and physician whose principal responsibility is to ensure that his comrades are ever a step ahead of their opponents on the battlefield, and always make it back off of it again.

As a combatant himself, he is distinguished in the usage of firearms and tactical arcanima, which he has learned to manipulate using a pair of specialized aethergauntlets. Following his amnesiac awakening in Eorzea shortly after the Calamity, Maurer undertook the adventurer's path under the auspices of the Lominsan Arcanist's Guild, where he advanced and completed his once-hobbyist work studying the tactics of the Nymian Marines. Under the tutelage of Philosopher-General Valerius, the phoenix-shaped faerie of a long-dead Nymian headmaster and occupant of Maurer's scavenged soulstone, he took on the mantle of the Scholar, which he has borne ever since with such solemn respect and love for its history and tenets that one might wonder whether he isn't himself a lost son of Vylbrand.

To the general layman, Maurer is a stern, stoic enigma whose checkered past has kept him from enjoying a wholly positive public image. To his companions, however, he is a staunch ally and a fierce defender of not only the world but those who have been chosen to save it, even when triage is necessary. His practical and straightforward nature means that he can be trusted in times of strife, and, perhaps ironically for the Garlean exile, it is when he is trusted that he performs at his best.

History

Though less secretive about his third eye in these post-Babil times, the good doctor is quite tight-lipped about his past. A few interesting tidbits have nevertheless been unearthed:

• There is no Garlean gens by the name of Maurer. However, it has been discovered that "Hieronymus Maurer" is the name written on the tombstone of a grave in an old cemetery located out in the La Noscean countryside.
• During his service to the Emperor, the man now called Dr. Maurer allegedly used to direct a research base at sea, and something terrible happened there.
• A young Garlean woman calling herself Flauriel Aratron has appeared in Eorzea. She bears a striking resemblance to Maurer.

Civilian Biography || Regular Fellow AU/Post-Endwalker Retirement

Dr. Maurer is a peculiar personage of Garlean heritage, but the circumstances of his origins have not stopped him from pursuing his three scientific loves abroad: the study of medicine, the study of the sea, and the study of Nymian warcraft. An amnesiac fugitive from his own Empire for reasons he does not seem keen to recover, he has forged his life anew in Eorzea under a fresh name and reputation under which he labors to atone for the old wrongs of his past. So far as integration goes, Maurer has done quite well: were it not for the pearl glimmer at his forehead, one might not ever know that this eccentric surgeon is not a denizen of La Noscea by blood, attired in the regalia of Nymian tacticians and dedicated to learning the land's rich history and old traditions of naval combat, sailing and arcanima.

Although his inherited defect means that he cannot manipulate aether in the natural manner of his Eorzean peers, Maurer has become something of a staple figure in service to the Arcanist and Marauders Guilds on account of his wealth of knowledge, old and new, of military strategems, advanced medicine and seafaring technologies. Accompanied by Valerius, the ancient faerie who taught him the war arts of the Nymian Marines, he works with the established mentors and faculty in the training of new Scholars, as well as in the procurement and stewardship of grimoires, soulstones, and the dormant faeries contained therein.

When not engaged in such mentorship nor in the duty necessary to keep his skills sharp on the battlefield, the doctor dwells offshore in a renovated island structure he has expanded and made into his home. A library, laboratory and homestead all at once, it is where Maurer stores his artifacts, keeps fish, grows food and medicine, and maintains a submersible and watercraft pair to take his study further into the sea. Since establishing his presence, wounded folk from the villages on the La Noscean coast will sometimes make the short trip across the waves to visit him for medical attention, which he has long provided in exchange for only a nominal fee as an ongoing sign of his good will.
