Netplay Setup Guide

Step 1: Download the Emulator

Download and extract from either link listed here:

Mupen-MPN for Windows: https://github.com/MarioPartyNetplay/Mupen-MPN/releases/latest/download/MupenMPN-win32.zip
Mupen-MPN for Linux: https://github.com/MarioPartyNetplay/Mupen-MPN/releases/latest/download/MupenMPN-linux.flatpak

This download contains our custom netplay build, which includes 100% saves, optimized netplay settings, game-enhancing codes and more.

Step 2: Gather Your Games

Obtain ROM files for the games you would like to play. Mario PartyMario Party 2 and Mario Party 3 are all supported. If you need help ripping your ROMs, try asking google for advice.

Step 3: Set Up the Emulator

Drag the Mupen MPN folder out of the download and keep it wherever you like. You can launch it using the RMG.

Select the Choose ROM Directory and select the directory where your games are located. The directory Games/ is included on windows for convenience.

Go to Config > Plugins and select Rosalie's Mupen GUI - Input Plugin in most cases.
Exception - if you are using a GameCube controller or Raphnet N64 Controller, select the respective options inside the general configuration menu for Plugins.
Note that there is not a configuration option for these options - they just work.

Please leave the Video Plugin to GLideN64, Audio Plugin to Rosalie's Mupen GUI - Audio Plugin, and Reality Signal Processor Plugin to Hacktarux/Azimer High-Level Emulation RSP Plugin.

Finally, click Controller and setup your controller on P1.

Netplay Usage Guide

Step 1: Accessing Netplay

Launch Mupen-MPN.

Step 2: Connecting to Other Players

Traversal

Click Host: Using the top-right server selector select the closest geographic location to your users.
Servers are located in these locations:

  • New York - New York
  • Seattle - Washington
  • Dallas - Texas
  • Amsterdam - Netherlands
  • Sao Paulo - Brazil

with enough demand, Sao Paulo and Singapore may become unlocked.

And double-click the game you want to play.

Click Join: Using the top-right server selector, select the location the host used. Click the game you want to play followed by join.

Step 3: Starting the Game

Once everyone is together, the host may start the party using the Start button. In case of crashing or desync, please redo the previous step.

Other Notes

The hosts saves and cheats will be synced from the host to the players before every game you play.

Player order is decided by the order of the netplay room by default. You can change ports in-game if so desired.

It's possible for multiple people to play from the same computer as long as they have two windows of Mupen open. Feel free to hide one of the windows after the game is started.

Lag is an unfortunate but necessary part of netplay. The host may use the Buffer selection to increase input buffer and make the game smoother.

Cross-pond play is unreliable in its current state, please pick a host geo-graphically closest to all of you, or the one where all are under 100ms.

Possible desyncs aren't always truly desyncs, keep playing to make sure if there was truly a desync before restarting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I already have Mupen, PJ64, or RMG, do I need to download it again?
A: Yes. This guide provides a version of this emulator geared specifically for netplay, and it's incompatible with other versions.

Q: How can I reduce netplay lag?
A:

  • Increase the buffer
  • Close any other programs using internet (web browsers, skype)
  • Make sure no one on the same network is using the internet (family, roommates)
  • Seek out other users with nearby region tags
  • Ensure it's actually netplay lag by having each player test FPS locally

Lag/Buffer refers to the amount of frames of input delay: The larger it is, the more smoothly the game will run, provided all players can run the game fine offline. Also, you can set it mid-game, so make sure to always set it to the lowest value that you get a smooth framerate with to reduce unnecessary input delay.

Q: The game's graphics are bad! Can I make them look better?
A: The resolution and anti-aliasing of a game can be changed without issue, though it is not recommended as the emulation will require more resources. If you'd like to edit these options, load a splitscreen Mini-Game such as MP2's Shell Shocked or MP3's Frigid Bridges offline and confirm the game speed does not decrease.

Q: Micro stutters are happening. How do I stop them?
A: Try increasing the buffer to prevent this.
