This varies depending on complexity, but a typical image, in my usual colored and shaded fashion is a "base" level of complexity.
Things that may raise the complexity and price: Additional characters, detailed background, variants, you get the idea.

Do's/Don'ts?

I won't draw violent, gross, depressing stuff. Basically, just be reasonable.
It's best to commission an artist who enjoys, and has experience with whatever your commission is.
You know the kind of stuff I draw, if your commission idea is something new to me, who knows, I may enjoy giving it a try, just ask. I haven't, for example, tried drawing furry despite liking it.

How long does a commission take to complete?

Roughly 1-2 weeks, if there's a queue, add 1-2 more weeks per person in queue. This is a rough estimate, I definitely prefer taking my time to do a good job rather than rushing.
I don't plan on accepting a lot of commissions simultaneously so the queue will always be reasonable.
