Introductory Background
Yun Jae-Seong, sometimes called "Jason/Jace" by his Japanese friends for convenience, came to Shiketsu Academy on a scholastic sponsorship from his home town of Jeju City, South Korea. While nervous about the big change in his life, he's excited to start his freshman year of high school at one of the premier Hero training academies, and there's a lot riding on the boy's shoulders. His parents weren't particularly notable individuals, his father being able to move small objects with his mind and his mother being able to communicate with different kinds of insects, but Jae-Seong's quirk stood out strongly enough to help him rise to prominence in his local district.
This is in no small part to the "pet" known as Ssszccriiyyaaahhhchhhkkk, or "Screech" insofar as human throats can pronounce her name. The size of a large, heavily muscled attack dog, she's an alien lifeform whose similarities to the Starcraft Zergling drew immediate attention from the Korean scene almost as soon as Jae-Seong's quirk manifested her around the age of 13. It's a powerful quirk, and it came at a cost. Opening his mind to Screech cost the boy his eyesight, destroying his optic nerves in order to "repurpose" the necessary grey matter and form a telepathic link to his new, deadly familiar. As such, Screech is never far from her creator's side, serving as his eyes and providing other assistance as best she can. This doesn't do much to endear Jae-Seong to new acquaintances though, who typically find Screech unnerving at best. Her tendency to be territorial over the boy is of little help diplomatically as well.
Not long before the would-be hero's transfer to Shiketsu, his quirk evolved further than before, and it was this evolution that got him through the front door. When commanded, Screech will begin spitting small egglike sacs onto the ground, which grow extraordinarily rapidly and within a few seconds will hatch a pair of beings very like herself, and under Jae-Seong's absolute control. His spawning limit tops out at a little under 1,300 of these creatures, but for almost any purposes they may as well be numberless, able to be respawned by Screech almost as soon as they are terminated. With razor sharp fangs, a multitude of claws, keen eyesight, strong legs for running and climbing, and a complete disregard for their own existence, the Swarm is a terrifying opponent, and terrifyingly useful for many aspects of hero-dom. When they're not acting like retarded CoD-kids in an Xbox Live lobby and trying to one-up each other while still somehow completing their mission, that is. Jae-Seong is secretly grateful sometimes that no one but himself can actually understand what the swarm is saying...
Screech herself is a walking storage unit for several poison-filled spines, cleverly concealed among other more solidly attached spurs on her back and sides. When needed, she can shed one or two of these organic blades for Jae-Seong's use, and the two make a strong close combat team, the boy's swordsmanship pairing well with Screech's brute savagery and alien cunning. Their inherent mental link lets them fight as a single unit, performing maneuvers impossible for even the best-drilled human teams.
Jae-Seong enjoys playing video games, Starcraft unsurprisingly being first among them, though since becoming blind he doesn't play nearly as much as he once did, much to his dismay. He has a generally optimistic personality, always trying to be part of a team in some way, and somewhat uncomfortable in isolation. Rather annoyingly though, the youngster has a tendency to try and become the leader of said groups, whether or not he really should be, and this can cause interpersonal friction. He's trained himself hard to overcome his relatively unimpressive physique as best he can, and thanks to a tiger mom, the boy knows how to buckle down and study. He's under a lot of pressure, but draws great comfort from Screech's calming presence and good advice. Somehow she's the more mature between the two of them, despite only technically being a bit more than three years old.
And a space alien.
Both the boy and his familiar also enjoy a surprising array of outdoor activities for a typical gamer, having grown up on one of the most rural (often derided as backwater) provinces in South Korea, Jeju Island. The island is dominated by the large shield volcano Hallasan, whose distant geological activity created most of the island itself, and up whose forested slopes Jae-Seong frequently took hiking adventures. The beaches of Jeju Island are also well known surfing destinations, and the sight of Screech perched on the front tip of Jae-Seong's surfboard, or paddling around near the shore hunting shellfish to eat was a common sight in the hot summers.
Though not really something he chose, Jae-Seong's mother required her son to learn a classical instrument, and as such the kid is a passable violin player when he cares to be. Screech herself strongly enjoys listening to the most discordant dubstep and electronica she can find, seeming to take comfort in the harsh, erratic sounds. When he thinks he can get away with it while not disturbing those around him too much, Jae-Seong occasionally serenades Screech with intentionally misplayed violin chords. He relaxes in his room listening to her chittering purrs while he makes his string instrument suffer, sawing away on the strings to create alien "melody" understood only by the two of them.
