sons of the forest spoilers everywhere in here

kelvin fan since day 1 aka february 23, 2023. what a pleasantly symmetrical date. you (jack holt, a journalist) and kelvin are the only survivors from the helicopter crash that introduces you to the island. there are many dead men wearing the same uniform as kelvin scattered around so this does not appear to be the first time they sent the goof troop to this island to find some billionaires.

unfortunately the crash leaves kelvin with devastating brain damage. the developers have not expounded upon his condition at all apart from comparing kelvin to that of a "lovable and obedient dog". okay endnight let’s get you to bed. using a simple neuro-anatomy chart i can assume his temporal lobe and broca’s area (responsible for speech and hearing respectively) are severely damaged.

he is said to have keen eyesight as he often points out cannibals from afar. kelvin can not engage in combat and will point at enemies before running or hiding. you can optionally get rid of kelvin, but he is useful for passive resource collecting or if you want a handsome disabled man following you around and or curling up to sleep in your fire pit. you can communicate with him via a notepad (#parietal lobe!) he will do whatever you ask until he gets tired and then he will take a break. to keep him happy and working efficiently, he needs breaks, food, and water. you can leave meat on a rack, grow berries, or just toss an arm on the ground for him

pre-crash behavior analysis
in the helicopter, kelvin is jamming out possibly listening to music. he looks around and smiles randomly and then the behavior loops. he appears to be having a good time and is just vibing, but some think his fidgeting points to asd. since he appears to be a highly trained soldier, it is likely nothing severe. during the crash he appears panicked as they are thrown around inside the helicopter, but nothing stands out except for a lack of dialogue

he writhes on the ground not too far from where you spawn. when you help him stand, he appears disoriented and dopey. you catch his attention by snapping your fingers and moving your pen left to right, gauging his cognitive condition. the trauma has left him in a daze. he appears constantly aloof and has a blank stare. he struggles with motor skills as his gait is stiff (gait is a person’s manner of walking. we are all learning new words today)

he expresses fear and experiences freeze or flight reactions. he can express satisfaction or content with a thumbs up, a nod, and or a dopey smile. he will shake his head in a child-like way in certain situations. he can also shake his head more subtly. when you show him an animal head, he can react in a variety of ways, such as shrugging his shoulders. a redditor commented this and it made me very happy "When you tell him to hold the radio, you can usually see him happy (provided you haven't hurt him). He can't quite hear the music, but he probably feels it through the vibrations."

kelvin is a perfect example of it’s not a bug, it’s a feature. i have a love hate relationship with this. the most popular example of this being an early-game bug where he, when asked to get logs or finish a structure, would chop down the tree you built your tree house in. following this, he would give you a thumbs up and look pleased with himself, which turned him into a loved meme. this was patched soon after, and was not intentional, but i like how it leaves his cognitive intelligence up for even more interpretation. but.............any instance where the developers neglect a bug fix because it "attributes" to the character’s intellectual disability is just pathetic. it appears with kelvin way too often. they could have programmed him to swing at your tree house once, hesitate, realize and then move onto a different tree. that would be an incredible feature.

i wish we got to see his personality and capabilities beforehand. some kind of lore or even a short interaction between him and fisheye to help us connect to him which would then make his tragic loss of personhood that much more devastating. i also wish he had development post-crash, e.g. skills he can learn and gradually improve, similar to the player’s strength level. maybe even sign language, although that might be a bit ambitious. it would also be cool and immersive if he interacted with virginia, e.g. she gives him gifts, he waves at her, he gives her a thumbs up after shooting an enemy, etc. in a nutshell, kelvin being disabled is a genius idea that fits seamlessly into the gameplay, but is realistically just endnight’s coverup for their poor ai and lack of voice acting for him. he better be in forest 3 tho

miscellaneous fun facts
kelvin is likely his call sign rather than his real name. in the game files he is referred to as rob and robby often, so likely his real name is robert, or that was just his first call sign. i like to think they kept his name and call sign the same for a humorous element. kelvin is (at least in america) an uncommon name. it’s a scottish name and was most popular in the 1960s. the word kelvin refers to the si unit of thermodynamic temperature.

no one cares
it is massively disappointing that they didn’t bother putting any sort of dialogue in the helicopter aside from the radio. and kelvin yelling the one time. i don’t wanna talk about the voice acting at the end. or the voice acting whatsoever actually. dear lord.
