Climate and Biome of Hoshiyomia

Preface

Be noted that this is merely a speculation based on what I know of natural phenomena and climate, and people from Hoshiyomia are free to change or reject anything that is listed here, especially when supernatural causes are involved.

Geology

The majority of Hoshiyomia, especially in the more mountainous east, is comprised of the West Holo orogeny, a collisional orogeny caused by the subduction of the Major Holo Plate underneath the Council Plate. This is most similar to the Himalayan orogeny, which is the result of the Indian Plate subducting under the Eurasian Plate. The primary exception is the southern area of Hoshiyomia near the Sakuran border, where the land is instead the result of the geologic rift formed by the constructive plate boundary between the Council Plate and the Soracraft Oceanic Plate. The closest RL example of this is Iceland.

Climate

Located on the mid-latitude west coast of the Holo continent, Hoshiyomia's climate is predominantly Mediterranean, with the exception of the alpine meadows at the extreme east. In essence, it means that unlike most other places, Hoshiyomia experiences the majority of rainfall during its colder months, resulting in a dry, hot summer that defines the Mediterranean climate. Further inland, the higher elevation and distance from the coast result in the uncommon dry summer continental climate.

Biome

Due to the unusual rainfall pattern, local wildlife has to adapt to the dry and hot summer by reducing their water loss. The resulting biome is known as Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub. A mixture of dry forest, mixed woodland and grassland, and shrubs, plants in this biome tend to be resistant to drought through means like waxy leaves that give the biome its defining greyish appearance. The dry summer also leads to wildfires being common, and some plants have adapted to it by utilising fire as part of their lifecycle. On the northern border with /who/, the cooler weather allows for the development of truly massive trees like the sequoias.

Crops

Despite the dry environment, the ample summer sunlight and mild winter mean Hoshiyomia is far from inhabitable compared with the truly arid desert south of Sakuran. With proper irrigation mitigating summer drought, Hoshiyomia can produce a decent amount of wheat, oats, and barley as their staple food. In addition to it, Mediterranean climate is also home to various kinds of food crops, including grapes, olive, citrus, and date palms.
