Who are Isegye Idol?

ISEGYE IDOL (KR:이세계 아이돌, JP:イセゲアイドル), or ISEDOL (KR:이세돌, JP:イセドル) for short, is a Korean VTuber girl-group project directed and owned by Korean Twitch streamer Woowakgood.

Where are Isegye going after Twitch Korea shuts down? (23.12.26)

They moved to AfreecaTV, which is a Korean local streaming platform.

Three chioces - Youtube, CHZZK, Afreeca

1. Youtube
Korean market for youtube live streams are very small, and viewers hate the live system. They are not considering Youtube.

2. CHZZK and Afreeca
CHZZK (yeah the name sucks) is a brand new streaming platform from NAVER (think of it as Korean Google. Ever heard of 'LINE' messenger? LINE's parent company is NAVER). The UI and system is very similar to that of Twitch. Currently CHZZK is in beta state and lacks many features, but it's run by big tech so we can expect major improvements in the following year. CHZZK's viewer pool is the smallest since it's a brand new platform and Twitch hasn't shut down yet.

AfreecaTV is one of the first and the most successful domestic streaming platform in Korea. Afreeca still has large viewership but Twitch absorbed most zatsu/game/vt viewership and outgrown them. Afreeca's biggest disadvantage is their bad reputation since it's known for their parental advisory contents and major incidents. However recently Afreeca decide to rebrand everything to change this - from changing their name to SOOP (also sucks), improving system and UI, targeting global audience and etc.

CHZZK's UI/system/viewers are very similar to that of Twitch, so many thought Wakgood and Isedols would choose CHZZK. However recently Wakgood did test streams with big contents on both platform, and after the stream on Afreeca he said he would prefer Afreeca for now since Afreeca has more viewer pool to absorb and has much more 'interesting' vibe to restart on a new platform.

The decision is not finalized yet, until some time in January.

Basic context

Woowakgood, Isegye's boss, is an influential Korean streamer who streamed since 2008. TLDR - He's like Korean Yagoo but he streams and can recognize your dumb chat. Until around 2019, his main content was gaming, but he switched to Minecraft & VRChat/metaverse (ofc still plays games tho) after seeing huge success himself. Much of his content was focused around livestream viewer participation, then one day he thought it would be fun to debut virtual idol in VRChat as his content... That's how Isegye started.

At first, Isegye was only a private project for one of his many contents, and was initially named 'Cyber Idol Project'. The members were picked through public auditions similar to KPOP auditions but through VRChat audition, interviews, and their own streams for evaluation. There were around 200 applicants and 6 were finally chosen.

Isegye debuted as streamer in August 2021 and debuted as Idol with original song released in December 2021. They became a huge hit around their Idol debut, and they are one of the most watched vtubers on Twitch now. Before Isegye there were few vtubers in Korea but after Isegye's success the market opened and it now became quite mainstream.

Isegye Idol is part of the WAKTAVERSE universe and belongs to WAK Entertainment. However those concepts are part of roleplaying and they have no separate operating agency, unlike other 'corpo' vtubers. The members are independent and only loosely coupled around Woowakgood (they even don't share their livestream revenues), and Woowakgood also currently has no interest in further expansion. All members still would later join Parable Entertainment, which is a streamer management company (MCN).

You might wonder then how they get techs and stuff for their content if they are not that corpo, Isegye and Waktaverse have very weird and interesting structure. They can be compared to open-source software projects, the core Waktaverse members lead and the fanbase participates. Most of Isegye's resources and tech are from their fanbase community. (Tho their management supports big stuff)

How to get English resources

  • Use translator: Google Translate / Papago / DeepL
Papago and DeepL works better. Use page translate in the browser if the webpage is in Korean.
  • Search subbed Youtube videos
Quite amount of videos are with subs in various language, usually subbed videos have translated title and [EN SUB] prefix.
Most of Isegye's subs are from fanbase driven open source translation project (Gamramstone).
You can explicitly search for subbed VODs here.
  • Lilpa runs dedicated EN/JP clip channel
Please subscribe, link in Channels / Links section.

KR VOD

As you might know Twitch stopped offering VOD service in Korea region.
Thus you might use tsuvod.com which is a private VOD archive service for live playback. (service down)
Isegye runs official VOD channels on Youtube too, the upload usually takes few days.
You can find these links for each member in Channels / Links section.
