Abaddon The Demon

Ten thousand years ago, the Demon Lord Abaddon was sealed. Since then, a hundred dynasties rose and fell, and that which should never have been forgotten has now faded into myth and rumor. The very names of the heroes that defeated the Lord of Slaughter have been lost to the mists of time.

For your entire life, the legend of Abaddon was little more than inspiration for the Church’s onerous sermons. Then, this fall, Mt. Velos, the volcano on the Empire’s West Coast, unleashed a cataclysmic eruption. Cities burned away. Castles were blown to dust. For leagues around life was stripped barren. Such horrific devastation the Empire had never seen since its founding. Many viewed it as a sign of the End Times. The Supreme Pontiff, Caligula Rex, called a conclave of the greatest theologians in the Empire to discuss the eruption. In the vain hope, the will of the Supreme Being might be divined.

None could’ve known that would be Caligula’s last act.

After calling the convocation to order. Before he could even take his seat on the August Throne. Caligula was seized with violent spasms. The sound of his spine shattering filled the horrified chamber as he levitated above the altar. Then, as the chamber erupted into chaos, a silken voice flowed from the Pontiff’s lifeless lips.

“Prepare oh Sons of Man. I am coming. Let the seasons pass 10 times. I shall feast. Build your walls high and strong. Forge your weapons, make them mighty. Love your woman, add to the feast. It matters not. All shall burn. So saith Abaddon.”

With those words, the Pontiff splattered upon the sacred altar, and a terrified Empire was left with naught but to prepare.

Political Situation

The Continent is currently dominated by the Empire of Teloria. A sprawling state of bureaucracy and feudal duty. The Empire is a diverse land. To the north great hosts of Barbarians war amongst each other. To the east, the abominable animal men howl to the sky in tribute to their degenerate gods.
The Empire is strong, yet, all is not as well as could be hoped. Many lords view themselves as Kings unto themselves. There is fear that the barbarians or the Beastkin may ride in Abaddon’s name (whether the Demon would spare them none know). Some whisper that there are cultists and traitors within the Empire itself.
