so.... about the cast of characters...

ah yes yes yes yes. of course. our lovely cast of strapping young goatherds. our fine fellows (and LADIES!!!!) theyre an interesting bunch ! this section provides basic info, and a detailed ish analysis of their characters. of course the hetalia cast is endless so i'll try and analyse most characters' stories there's only so much i can be bothered to write.

hetalias story is set in (or starts off in at least) in ww2. the main 8 are made of the axis (germany italy japan) and the allies (england america france russia china) the story mostly revolves around them. enough STALLING lets START TALKING ! (creds to that one tumblr blog that has been down 4 ages 4 helping me write most of this from my memory i have learned so much from you.)

oh boy. mr feliciano vargas. he's an energetic ass guy ! a bit of an airhead too but its okay. he's extremely quirked up and HATES FIGHTING because he literally lost both his grandpa and his first love (who was a BOY by the way.) to the horrors of war. fun ! he just happens to have a history of abandonment and whatnot. he also has a low sense of esteem due to him being considered "useless" and mentioned multiple times that germany really shouldnt like him, as there's no reason to. this causes him to do odd things, such as running up to germany randomly while naked to ask him if he still likes him.

he's extremely loyal and is hyperaware of how annoying he seems to other people, yet he cannot stop his behaviour as it is on impulse. essentially he's scared people will leave him if he doesnt leave them alone. the dub is not necessarily canon, but at some point he implies that he takes some kind of anxiety meds when he tells that he doesnt want germany to leave him as "he could feel it wearing off" and "it's scary to be alone". which is just a show of how many issues this guy has ! he also used to work under austria as a kid, and austria sort of beat him up and punished him by locking him in a dark room and not giving him food. which id definitely child abuse. but in the present day italy never saw anything wrong with how he was raised. they have a close relationship, as father and son. but he was kinda forced to work until he dropped. as a tiny little child.

even if italy is a coward by nature, he is an extremely good fighter. he is literally centuries old. hima has stated he is extremely good with a sword and even as rhe state of venice he managed to fight off entire empires (but modern technology like guns are pretty foreign to him) as he had all the fighting spirit in him as a little kid, he grew and sort of mellowed out over the years. and he knows how much war can tear people apart and damage them, he has first hand experience. people tend to insult him for it, but he's mature enough to know that war gets people no where. he doesnr surrender because CANT fight, he surrenders because he knows fighting gets people no where. he can fight but he just doesnt want to! make pasta and not war!

italy is very forgiving. he wants nothing more to be friends with everyone and gives everyone a second chance no matter what they do to him. do not call him stupid for that one he's stronger than anyone else. everyone else has held grudges against one another for fucking centuries DO NOT. get me started on france and england's 100 year war. italy has literally been kicked around by everyon and their mother and yet he still looks at them with the most love and purest intent ever. he's the strongest out of anyone to have the fucking guts to do that. he's the one that smiles at the end of it. at least one person is gonna have to keep the mood up? when no one else can muster a smile, you know italy will. most people take him for granted for this and they yell at him for acting stupid in a serious situation.

i'm not gonna lie everyone treats him like shit. it's gotten to the point where he has literally become numb to the insults thrown to his face. he understands when people insult him. he swallows it up. his brother romano, and everyone around him constantly call him stupid all the time. and he just smiles through it all. but he TRIES romano especially out of his extreme inferiority complex and loathing towards italy for being "better" is completely fucking blind to how much italy tries for him , and paints him as a shit brother ! italy did not say shit when romano left him for america during the industrial revolution, because he always puts his brothers and everyone else's happiness above his own. AND WITH ALL THIS ITALY BARELY PICKS FIGHTS TOO?? what really broke me was how he doesnt. believe he's taller than romano because he just looks up to his brother so much... god that hurts...

italy is such an indepth character, and he's gone through so much. everyone is so mean to him and they literally havent even noticed that he is so shattered inside, and even fans take him for granted. he literally tells people that he is nervous/scared of being alone and they literally do not care :( ughhugh i love you feli you will always be famous .

HE'S VERY DEPENDENT ON MANUALS, HENCE HAS A LOT OF THEM. AND HE THINKS THAT AT THINGS WILL SURELY GO WRONG IF HE DOESN'T FOLLOW THEM. HE A NEAT-FREAK, BUT HASN'T GOT TANY MORE IDEAS FOR RECYCLING. HE HAS 3 DOGS, WHICH EVERYONE ELSE THINKS IS KINDA TOUGH. HE SEEMS TO STILL BE TELLING ITALY OFF AND TAKING CARE OF HIM EVEN TO THIS DAY. "

ludwig. aph germany. the embodiment of growing up too quickly. he had a hard childhood, literally being the second coming of hre i think people expected a lot out of him. He had issues the moment he stepped put of the womb, on top of prussia having to CONSTANTLY fight with austria over him , he was born so weak and frail so when he finally became to be the big strong man he was likely inspired about how his brother prussia fought constantly for his case even when he was clearly going through his own problems, he is literally dying in present day as shown here (the implication is that he's not healing as fast as a normal nation would because he is getting weaker, which would lead to his death) germany now has the strength to help people, so he would never have to feel powerless again. this leads to him always being the person to take charge, to want to help others.

but unfortunately, being a big strong man comes with people being scared of him or thinking he's a bad guy. he's socially awkward, cannot express himself and pretty shy, but everyone just kind of took one look at him and was like YEAH HE'S GONNA EAT ME ALIVE. no one wanted to be around him out of a sort of fear? which genuinely made him gaslight himself into thinking, yeah i dont want to be around people either. he wanted to help people so badly, but no one ever gave him a chance. until one day.

enter none other than feliciano vargas, italy. italy was his first friend. italy gave him a chance and they became the best of friends. germany doubted himself from the begining, he literally gaslighted himself into thinking he was a bad guy as he told italy , "i've never had friends so i'll likely treat you badly", even if he is not a bad person by heart the fact that everyone acted like he was one genuinely hammered into his self image and what he saw of himself. but as italy became his friend, he actually discovered more of his personality himself, he felt himself come out of his shell and got more friends along the way, and became happier than he used to be!

he expresses how he likes how italy relies on him ,it makes him feel useful, as a kid he could never have anyone rely on him because of his ill health. he also really likes the amount of trust italy has in him. no one had ever trusted him before, through his mean image. on the other hand, he hates being on the recieving end of support. he always tries to be the big strong germany, as he never wants to feel as powerless as he did as a kid. He regularly over works and takes every issue upon himself like trying to keep everyone orderly at world meetings and he gets extremely demoralised simply just WORRYING ABOUT THINGS HE CANNOT CONTROL.

i also really hate when people paint him to be uncaring, because he is very straightforward and strict in nature. he is strict as he likes the control from having none before, and he LITERALLY SAID he would always be loyal to italy, even if he found new friends, as italy essentially taught him what it was to be loved, to be given a chance. He is capable of feeling !!!! he just doesnt show it conventionally as he always feels like he has to be a brick wall and push away his own needs to stay strong for everyone else. WHEN ITALY WAS UPSET HE MADE THEM MATCHING NECKLACES??? he worries so much for others and takes so much into his own hands to free others of such burdens, he's quite an independent guy! in turn of this he barely worries for himself, so he's quite content with working for hours as long as it's not anyone else.

more about keeping the stone faced facade, he literally loves baki g cakes and other confectionary, calls dogs doggies and he loves roman history because he looks up to rome for being strong and great. HES SUCH A HUGE DORK BUT HE IS SCARED OF SHOWING IT BECAUSE HE IS THE ONE WHO STAYS WELL PUT TOGETHER AND TAKES THE BURDEN FOR OTHERS. in conclusion, germany is an misunderstood guy . he is kind and the world is so ready for him. even if his self image has gotten somewhat better, he still nitpicks small details of himself, such as his "unnatural" looking smile and that he may be too rough with people, but he is so much more than what he believes.

ADDING TO THE FACT THAT IT'S AN ISLAND COUNTRY, THE TIME THAT HE BECAME A RECLUSE WAS BECAUSE HE WANTED THE UNIQUENESS OF HIS CULTURE TO REMAIN INTACT. HE THINKS THAT THIS WAS NORMAL, WHICH ACTUALLY WASN'T REALLY NORMAL.

i had 4 mental breakdowns trying to write this section i am so srs so i hope you enjoy it!

kiku honda is a double edged sword. a double edged katana if you will. (ba dum tss) i think most aspects of his character are somewhat contradictory, or at least there has been an occurence where he has CLEARLY shown that he has contradicted himself, which is not necessarily a bad thing! it shows his growth and development. his entire plot point is his character development actually! japan is generally a pretty closed off guy (literally. he shut himself off from the world for about 200 years) so it is nice to watch that he's growing. i find that japan is always (or was) either at one extreme or another, ex. being extremely hardworking and CONSTANTLY overworking himself but also being able to laze around and playing video games all day, although in the present i find that he is not like this anymore, and is becoming more stable. the reason that he was able to develop was because he started communicating more with the outside world.

as we all know, japan had been isolated for a rough 250 years , only keeping contact with netherlands thoughput that entire period. (Insert explanation of why im not bothered to look 4) but it is implied that he doesnt really NEED to go out to talk to people. Thats right . Our very own japan hetalia has some sort of clarivoyancy ability ! japan had contacted chibitalia (or idk if he was even meant to) in his dreams , years before they even met. Why ? No idea. apart from appearing in his future friends dreams, he see whats in peoples heads and its actually unknown how far this ability spands . this ability led to him . essentially forgetting how to speak during his isolation, cause he didnt need to ! There is only a few panels of him using is there is so many questions at least i have so many . What does he see? Can he talk to people? How far back can he look? Is it only on what the person rememebers, or can he tap into long locked away sentiments in peoples minds ? Is it on command or is it like a prophecy medicine cat moon pool warrior cats thing ? Hima please fix your lore the trivia is nice and all but i cant.

There is a real version counterpart to this ability ! this is because of japan having a bang in interests of extrasensory perception ! (Esp) this contrasts to (in the meiji era) the belief in supernatural spirits declining. which was shown though japan being unable to see kappa and youkai when england clearly could ; the occult and clairvoyance was still super popular and people still did those things . so he does that i guess . normally being able to read your homies mind

japan is kind of . A nosey guy. A polite one. But a nosey one ! (Insert him hiding in germanys ceiling becayse he was skeptical of what russia would do to him) so if he had a grip on this ability (he probably does as he has those neat little future seeing goggles) so he potentially may know most of the secrets of the hetalian world but is probably swallowing them , due to his politeness. He does not seem like a snitch. this revelation makes hetalia more interesting in a way? because surely if he knew all this before actually talking to them , heaven knows what he would expect from the outside world .

TO BE HONEST IF I SAW SOME OF THE SHIT HAPPENING I WOILD NOT COME OUT EITHER FUCK THAT DUDE in the real world “satoku”, (1603-1863), an array of world events happened. including but not limited to : the wars of austrian sucession, the fucking AMERICAN REVOLUTION, thr french revolution, and the napoleonic war. if japan used to COMMUNICATE with people during his isolation through esp, and didnt just do nothing all day, HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT HE ENDED UP SEEING. wouldnt it be funny when america showed up to japans crib to open his trade routes and bring him back into the world , japan wld just think is this The kid from the soap opera i watched those 2 white guys have ? (Sorry i cant be srs.) BUT IMAGINE how many secrets hes hiding. japan hetalia may be the fakest bitch ever.

although the one time we saw what japan sees when he reads minds (through his glasses) used on another character (the first time was a 4th wall break) he didnt believe his eyes ….. so who knows ……… although i think it is because he already knew italy; the vision he saw was of a different side he never saw of him so he probably didnt want to believe it, because since he has never seen him like that it's easy to shurg off. it was also an invention, and not just him. But if he didnt know the person like when he was isolated , what he saw is in his memory is seen in a completely neutral lense.

japan tends to really fluctuate back and forth on his personality . you dont truly know what he is . every personality point of his has a point where it is contradicted more or less. Which makes people’s views on kiku extremely inaccurate at times, as he really is a double edged sword (katana)

japan is traditionally seen as polite and quiet, though he can be a literal bitch. blowing people up with his mind. he is hateful. he just keeps quiet about it out of politeness (i hate when people think he cant hate when he CAN). did we watch the same hetalia anime where every episode japan was in we hear his “wow this guy is a fucking weirdo” in his mind ???? The internal thoughts ????? “he senses the mood and refrains from speaking” being his motto is extremely telling. He is unbelievably careful eith his words and he is the perfect representation of the line between politeness and kindness . just because you are polite does not mean you are kind (JAPAN IS KIND. JUST MOT AS MUCH AS PEOPLE THINK HE IS . ) he can speak his mind and is STUBBORN AS HELL. Like STUPIDLY STUBORN. he only agreed with america in the world meeting as it was the good thing to say, and germany’s strict diet plan for his high blood pressure, as it was the correct thing to do, not because he is easily swayed. if he stayed in his house for 250 years. That takes a lot of willpower. (That makes him sound bad , but just understand.) he is said to be hardworking . but he spent time isolated for a while and he is an otaku. one can only theorise how much time is wasted on media. AND RIGHTLY SO.

he wants to learn about others : he’s ever so curious nowadays to learn about more culture and talk to others. but he stayed inside for 250 years b4. he really did NOT want to talk to anyone. It’s nice to see how his character ended up developing throughout the years and it pushes the wonderful “you dont have to do it alone” message!!! japan was content alone but he discovered happiness with friends, beyond content!!!! that people really helped stablize japan because i swear theres soemthing wrong with this guy internally to have this unstable of a presentation of yourself slash in a kind way

japans isolation was not just physically, he always felt different from everyone else just in general, he was isolated socially. japan felt it was hard to open up his defensive walls because he was so different to everyone; he hates things that are new , japan is relatively traditional and after being isolated for 250 years , he felt behind everyone and that he was too old for everyone and the world . It’s a sort of too late to start so why bother kind of thing. he is quite stubborn rememeber. but with the power of friendship THEY MANAGED and now kiku is the strapping young goatherd he is today. who cheered ladies and gentlemen. He’s not perfect . He’s still ditzy as fuck and does some odd shit sometimes ! but its nice to see that he is more open nowadays.

in conclusion kiku is a character that is very easily misinterpreted because people look at him in either black and white. He is a double edged KATANA. he is in shades of grey. people need to understand that. He has grown so much as a person !!!!!! and i got mental damage from trying to figure this out myself so you people are lucky i’m here for you. thank you for reading ladies and gentlemen i want to die (clapping sfx)
