Friday Night Soiree

A Special Addition to Rhona's Phoenix

Your mom lets you take her car for the night, the red Toyota Camry. You think it would have been nicer if some guy had picked you up, but there was no time for you to find a date and you are pretty sure that dates wouldn't be allowed. Rhona always invited who she invited and that was it.

You pull out of the driveway and wave goodbye to your family, however, you remember that there might be a few interesting guys at the party, guys you might want to get to know a little better.

You remember Carlo, the really good-looking soccer player. You remember that his girlfriend was that good-looking girl soccer player and you frown. Then you remember that they broke up in kind of an ugly way. Opportunity for you maybe?

Then you remember Lee, Rhona's boyfriend. You haven't thought about him in a little while! Yeah, Lee was hot, but he left years ago. You wonder what happened to him.

As your phone calls out the driving directions to some place you've never been before, you remember that you haven't seen Rhona since Lee's going away party. Questions come back about Rhona, what happened to her, and where has she been all that time. She hadn't attended school at all the past year, as far as you know.

You start to feel nervous. Going to a Rhona party sounded like a lot of fun before you really gave it a thought. You haven't seen or heard from Rhona in all this time. Why would she invite you to a house somewhere you have never even heard about before when she couldn't even send you a text message to say hello?

You shake off your bad feelings. It is all weird, but the good part is that you will have a great story to tell everyone tomorrow.

Your favorite song plays, alerting you to an incoming call. You tap the screen to answer without identifying the caller.

"Hello?"

The caller jumps straight to it.

"Portia told me that you are going to a Rhona party tonight? Is that true?"

The caller sounds frantic. You recognize the voice. It is Karen. You ignore the distressed sound of her voice. She has a tendency to sound that way.

"What's going on Karen?"

"Listen, before you go to that party, you need to know some things."

Something makes you think twice about ignoring her drama.

"Hold on," you say, and you find a convenient place to pull over and talk.

You sit and listen to Karen going on and on for ten minutes. She tells of rumors about Rhona getting hooked on prescription medication. You can't believe that at all but you listen anyway. Then Karen asks if you know that Lee is back in town. No, you didn't know that. How did Karen know? Karen asks if Lee is invited. You admit that you don't know who is invited. You figure that Rhona's best friend, Ioni will be there. If Lee is really back in town and if they are still seeing one another, he'll probably be there. You hope that Carlo will be there, but ...

"I'm going to be late, Karen. I'm already late now!"

"I'm just warning you," Karen says. "You might want to think twice."

"Okay, thanks," you say, and disconnect.

You frown. You look at the clock. You are already fifteen minutes behind.
