Athlete's Foot

Severe itching not better after 24 hours of using steroid cream

Scab that looks infected (drains pus or gets bigger) and not better with antibiotic ointment

After 7 days, bites are not better

After 14 days, bites are not gone


Bee Sting

More than 72 hours since the sting and redness getting larger

Area looks infected (spreading redness, pus, pain)

Swelling is huge (10 cm or 4 inches). It spreads across a joint such as the wrist.


Breast Symptoms

Red area or red lump without fever

Red, moist, raw skin underneath breasts (in women with larger breasts)


Breast-Feeding Questions

The mother has signs of breast infection (area of redness) and no fever.


Burn

Blister is present. Exception: small, closed blister less than 12 mm (½ inch) in size

Constipation

Cut, Scrape, or Bruise

Very large bruise after a minor injury (5 cm or wider, 2 inches or wider)

Cut or scrape looks infected (redness, red streak or pus)

Dirty wound or a puncture wound and you have a weak immune system. Examples are: diabetes, sickle cell disease, HIV, cancer, organ transplant, taking oral steroids, kidney problems.

Doesn't heal by 10 days


Diarrhea

Fever lasts more than 3 days

Close contact with person or animal who has diarrhea

Travel to country at risk for diarrhea within past month

Diarrhea lasts more than 1 week

You are taking a new drug which may be the cause

You were recently in the hospital or took antibiotics

Loose stools happen often


Drug Use and Abuse

Drug use keeps you from working or other activities


Dry or Cracked Skin

Looks infected (pus or spreading redness)

Bleeding from cracked lips or cracked skin

Cracks on feet that make it hard to walk

Cracks over the joints (such as inside the elbow or behind the knees) make it painful to use the joints

Peeling skin and cause is not clear

After 2 weeks of treatment, cracked skin or cracked lips are not healed

After 2 weeks of treatment, dry skin is still itchy


Ear - Swimmer's

Yellow discharge or pus from ear canal

You have other questions or concerns


Ear Piercing Symptoms

Redness has spread beyond the earring site

Influenza Close Contact within last 7 days and you are High-Risk. See the list of High-Risk in Causes.


Ingrown Toenail

Spreading red area or streak, but no fever

Entire toe is red and swollen

Pus pocket (yellow or green) seen in skin around toenail or under toenail.

After using Care Advice more than 2 days, pus is not gone

After using Care Advice more than 3 days, still hard to walk

After using Care Advice more than 7 days, not starting to get better

Insect Bite

Insomnia

You've been told you make choking sounds when you sleep or that you sometimes stop breathing

You still have trouble sleeping after using care advice

You feel like you need to move your legs often at night and it keeps you from sleeping

Moody, grumpy or restless during the day

Hard to focus or you feel tired all the time

You think an illness or medicine is causing your sleep problems

Pain causes insomnia

Insomnia lasts more than 1 week

Jock Itch

Rash keeps spreading after 1 week of treatment

Mpox (formerly Monkeypox)

You have had contact with someone in a high-risk group for mpox (men who have sex with men) and have these symptoms:

  • Fever, chills, headache, muscle aches
  • Large lymph nodes
  • New blister or group of blisters filled with white fluid. These may be around the anus or genitals, mouth, hands, bottom of your feet, or chest. The blisters are often painful.
  • The blisters may appear as scabs.

Close contact with skin, body fluids, bedding, towels or clothes of someone that has been diagnosed with mpox

You think you have mpox

New blister or group of blisters and you are not sure where they came from. No fever or flu-like symptoms.

You are worried you might have mpox

A change in bowel habits for no clear reason in the past 4 weeks

Mucus discharge from the rectum (anus)

Shoulder Injury

Lump is larger than 2.5 cm (1 inch) and cause is not known

Small lump lasts more than 7 days and cause is not known


Snake Bite

Bite looks infected (spreading redness, pus). Note: infection doesn't start until at least 24-48 hours after a bite.


Sore Throat

Fever or chills; feeling hot or shivery

Throat pain is severe

Large lymph nodes in the neck

Pink rash that's widespread

You have white, pus-filled spots on the back of your throat (on the tonsils)

Fever lasts more than 3 days

Fever returns after being gone for more than 24 hours

Close contact to a person with Strep within last 7 days

Sores on the skin

Sore throat is the main symptom and lasts more than 48 hours

Sore throat with cold/cough symptoms lasts more than 5 days

You are not getting better after 7 days


Spider Bite

More than 48 hours since the bite and redness gets larger

Bite starts to look bad (such as skin damage, blister or purple colour)


Sunburn

Area of burn looks infected

Swollen feet make it hard to walk

Itchy rashes in sun-exposed skin occur many times


Suture or Staple Questions

Suture came out early but wound is still closed


Tick Bite

Widespread rash starts 2 to 14 days after the bite

Deer tick was attached for more than 36 hours

Deer tick is swollen, not flat

New redness starts more than 24 hours after the bite. Note: infection is rare. It does not start until at least 24-48 hours after the bite.

More than 48 hours since the bite and redness getting larger

Red-ring or bull's eye rash appears around a tick bite. Note: the rash of Lyme disease starts 3 to 30 days after the bite.
