"Get out of my way."

The girl standing in front of the entrance to the Shiketsu Dorm Building radiated cold fury. Behind her was a column of construction workers carrying various equipment.

"Miss Chang, I know you're upset, but this is most irregular. I cannot let you in like that."

An old woman barred her path. She was the Dorm Manager, and as such she had a duty to protect it. Even if it was from one of the students living in it.

"If you did your job, then I wouldn't have to do this. Now step aside."

"You will NOT speak to me like that, young lady."

The telepathic impulse flowed between them, projecting how offended the old lady was. A pang of guilt grasped Hailey's heart, but it wasn't enough to make her back off.

"I'm sorry, but there are limits to what I can take. I've tried other methods, but if a wall is the only thing that can stop her, then a wall I'll build."

"That goes against all regulations. I simply cannot allow that."

"Then what the hell am I supposed to do?!"

"First of all, calm down. And I cannot help you with that. Neither altering the room assignments nor giving construction permissions lies within my rights. You'd have to speak with the Principal about that."

"Fine! I'll do that then!"

Hailey turned around.

"You guys wait here!"

She stomped off towards the admin building.

"Miss Chang, what is it you're expecting to get out of this?"

Karaburan stood behind her desk, glaring at the girl standing in front of it. A mix of annoyance and exhaustion painted on the Principal's face. She had a whole school on her head. She didn't have time to deal with the grievances of some bratty teenage girl.

Unfortunately for her, each student in the hero course was right now a precious resource she couldn't afford to be careless with. Doubly so with this one. A major portion of the school's funding came from donations, and Changs were among the most generous donors.

So despite herself, she had to at least appear to entertain her complaints.

"I expect to get this mess fixed. I know the dorms were a dumb idea, but they did help me convince Daddy to let me stay in school. But the conditions are abysmal."

"We've passed every inspection, and..."

"Did they include the ability to deal with mutants leaving their bodily fluids everywhere?"

Karaburan did not grace that question with an answer, and instead chose to just stare Hailey down. To her surprise, the girl did not back down.

After a couple of seconds, she decided to just skip to the end of this conversation.

"Look, I have no time to play chicken with you here. I've already given pass too often to your... indiscretions. I will not allow for another one. I won't let you build a wall between you and her, I won't get into the mess of reshuffling the rooms, and I won't allow you to opt out of the dorm system. You know I also won't kick you out, but I know you won't quit by yourself over this. Just clench your teeth and deal with it. Heroes deal with worse than a bad roommate. You're dismissed."

A series of expressions painted rapidly on Hailey's face: shock, anger, resignation. As she was about to turn and leave, another one popped up, that of someone having an idea.

"What if I had an alternative."

Karaburan sighed.

"Out with it..."

"I can't build a wall between me and her. Fine. You won't rearrange the roommate assignments. Fine. I have to stay in the dorms. Fine. But there are rooms on the top floor that waste away unused. Why not rent them out at an extra charge?"

The mention of a new revenue stream caused Karaburan to perk up.

"Continue."

"I'd be willing to pay well to take some of them off your hands. I'd still be living in the dorms. On paper, I could even still be her roommate. But I'd just have some extra space, where I'd just so happen to spend all of my time at. I even already have a crew ready to make any renovations that are necessary."

The Principal quickly ran some calculations in her head.

"Let's discuss the details."

It'd been a long day for Takako Amahagene, but it seemed as if it's about to get even longer.

"What's going on here?!"

She asked angrily as she watched an ant-like line of men in bright vests carrying her belongings out of the dorm and arranging it neatly on the square in front of it.

"Are you the owner of these? We were going to take them to the warehouse for now, but if you want them delivered somewhere else, I'll let the fore-"

The man grew silent as he saw a blade growing in the girl's hand.

"Carry these back. Now."

Her words cut through the air.

"W-we can't, they already started on the walls, and the plumbing, there just isn't any space..."

"Who's responsible?"

"Miss Chang. She's over there."

He pointed with a trembling finger to the girl sitting on a nearby bench and talking on the phone. Takako immediately headed towards her.

"You! Who gave you the right to?"

The girl didn't even answer her. She just raised a finger and turned away.

"When can you deli—"

She wasn't allowed to finish as Takako ripped the phone out of her hand and hung up.

"You will not ignore me." || "What the hell are you doing?!"

Their voices clashed as Hailey rose to confront her.

"That's what I should be asking. Who are you and who gave you the right to do this?"

Takako pointed behind herself with her thumb.

"First of all, give me back my phone."

She didn't wait for her request to be met. The phone flew out of the older girl's hand and floated through the air to its owner.

"As for your questions, I'm the new owner of the rooms where that" she waved her phone in the direction of Takako's belongings "was lying around."

"Since when? I didn't hear about any new girls joining our class. And you said 'rooms'?"

"I'm a second-year. And I've got a lease on them until the end of the year."

She pulled out a contract and handed it to Takako. The girl skimmed through it quickly before tearing it up.

"I've got copies, you know."

"This is bullshit. You can't do this! How much?"

"How much what?"

"How much for the rooms."

"I don't need money. I need the rooms."

"I needed them first."

"But you did not get them on paper. And I seriou—"

"You know what? I don't care about any more excuses. You and me. One vs one. In an hour. Behind the library building."

She stormed off. Hailey could only stare at the audacity.

A boy and a girl stood behind the Shiketsu library, talking. He was holding a wooden sword and leaning on the wall as he listened to the girl's angry speech with a consoling look on his face.

"I really tried to be patient with her, but she didn't even let me explain!"

"You were both pretty agitated given the situation. Are you sure—"

Hifumi's question got interrupted by Takako's arrival.

"Your time has come. Are you ready? Wait. Who's that? I told you to come alone."

"You declared the duel, so I at least get to declare my champion. That's him."

"Hi, Takako-senpai. I'm Hifumi. I've heard—"

"Fine. If you want me to beat your boyfriend instead of you, that's your choice. But when I do, the lease is mine."

Hifumi squared up at the sound of the challenge.

"And what if I beat you?"

"That won't happen."

"But what if?"

"I don't know. She can keep the lease?"

"That doesn't sound like a fair deal. That's the current status. You should risk giving something up."

"Fine. What do you want?"

Takako's attention shifted back to Hailey.

"Beyond you getting off my back, I don't care. He's the one fighting you, so he can choose."

"If I beat you, I want you to join the kendo club!"

"Fi— wait, what? Why?"

"A lot of people dropped out, and I've heard you've got the skills."

"Alright. It's not going to happen anyway. Get ready."

Takako walked over to her chosen spot. As she did, she clasped her hands. When she pulled them apart, inside them was an impeccably crafted katana, albeit with a blunted edge. She took her stance. With predatory eyes, she observed Hifumi taking his own.

"You can take him, senpai!"

The unexpected voice came from behind her, and it was accompanied by an extremely unpleasant pressure on her shoulders. Immediately, more blades shot out of her back and cut through her uniform, but they failed to make impact.

"Hey, hey, hey, relax!"

Takako turned around. In front of her, on the hind of her three pairs of limbs, stood a blue-skinned girl with a body of a salamander. She had her arms raised, half in an attempt to look harmless, half to help herself balance on her tail.

"Who the hell are you?"

Takako pointed her sword at the new arrival.

"The reason for my move. My current rommate."

Hailey chimed in.

"My name is Umeko! I came to cheer you on, senpai!"

That's when Takako felt it. Droplets of ooze leftover from where the girl touched her started to slip through the holes her blades cut in her uniform. A revolting, slimy sensation of the fluid dripping down her back made her wince.

She turned to Hailey with a mix of disgust and pity on her face.

"You know what? I give up. You can have the rooms. You clearly need them more. And what I need is a shower. And to burn these clothes."

As Takako rapidly left the scene, Hifumi shouted behind her.

"That means you'll join the club too, right? Right?!"
