The event was two weeks away and I had the rings in my possession. Tessa and I had shopped early for Christmas and had most of the gifts bought already. During the week we bought a Christmas tree and a ton of ornaments that Tai picked out. Bill and Beth came down on Friday night and everyone helped decorate the tree, but Tai made sure to tell you where the ornaments went. After finishing up the tree looked amazing and we put Tai to bed. Bill and Beth sat with us and drank a cup of coffee. Bill launched into one of his duties regarding my plan.

"Tessa, you do know you’re up for several awards at the banquet, right?", he asked.

"Dad, I don’t care about that.", she replied.

"Regardless, everyone will be there including the Mayor, Lieutenant Governor and all of the Board of Directors. You might want to consider going to get a dress for the occasion.", he stated, very serious.

"Dad, I can wear the same dress I wore last year. I have only worn it once.", Tessa replied.

"Oh god no……...no way.", he laughed.

"Hey dad, that’s not nice.’, Tessa answered, frowning.

"It’s ok sir, I will take care of it.", I stated.

"What are you going to take care of mister?", Tessa asked, looking at me.

"I’m going to take you shopping for a new dress.", I answered.

"Oh really?", she giggled.

"Yep really………. tomorrow in fact.", I answered.

The following morning, Tessa, Tai and I went into town and to Sak’s Fifth Avenue to find a dress for Tessa. With the added muscle Tessa had put on finding a dress that fit right might be a challenge. Tessa tried on several dresses while I sat on the chair with Tai on my lap. Several times when Tessa came out Tai would shake her head no causing the saleswoman much amusement. A lot of the shorter dresses were too tight for Tessa’s muscular thighs.

So, Tessa began to try some longer gowns on since this would be a formal event. She tried on several, but none got the seal of approval from Tai or Tessa. Then Tessa reappeared in a white long gown that was split up from the front to mid-thigh. She looked as if she had been poured into this dress. It hugged every curve she had and made her butt look incredible. Tai immediately put both hands over her mouth and squealed in delight.

"That’s the one Dr. T. That’s the one.", she screamed excited.

"That’s great isn’t it. I’m letting a three-year-old dress me.", Tessa remarked to the saleslady.

"I must admit baby, Tai has good taste. You look amazing in that dress.", I added.

"Well, I guess I found a dress.", Tessa admitted.

We added a pair of Alexandre Birman Clarita Lace pumps in white lace to finish off the look. Then we took Tai to the little girl’s section and found her a pretty spaghetti strapped dress in white lace. It was perfect with her dark complexion and found some white comfortable shoes for her to wear.

Normally this event was for adults only but because of the accident and Tai being brought to the hospital she was going to be honored at the event. Thankfully so because she was a big part of my surprise. Although not being able to tell her till the last minute was tricky.

The week drug on and Friday night Tessa told me that she was going to the hair stylist to get a trim and maybe some color the next morning. I agreed to take Tai with me to the gym and get my workout in and then returned home so Tai could take a long nap. This was going to be a long night for a three-year-old.

It was close to three o’clock in the evening before I heard the key in the front door lock. I was sitting on the sofa watching television when I looked up to see Tessa walk in the room.

"Holy fuck………", I blurted out upon seeing her.

"That’s not the reaction I was hoping for.", Tessa sighed.

"No, I mean like…… I’m stunned. I love it.", I replied, getting up and walking over to her.

"How did you come to this?", I asked, walking around her looking closely at what was done.

"Well, I work so much and long hair always gets in the way. So, she suggested a Pixie Razor Cut and I agreed. After the cut she suggested I go blonde, so we went Beach Blonde Extreme with Golden Blonde accents. So, you do like?", she asked again.

"Oh, I like……... I like so much I want to fuck you now.", I urged.

"Oh no, you’re not messing up my hair until after the banquet, but I’ll fuck your brains out tonight.", Tessa giggled.

Little did she know the surprise I had planned for her. I was guaranteed to have my brains fucked out hair or not. I told Tessa to stay put and went into Tai’s room and woke her up. I told her that Tessa had a surprise for her. She ran into the living room and squealed in excitement when she saw Tessa’s new haircut and color. Tessa scooped her up and Tai was amazed at the color softly running her hands through Tessa’s hair.

"I love your hair, Doctor T", she stated.

"So, it’s unanimous. Everybody likes it.", Tessa giggled.

I dressed in my formal black suit and then helped Tai dress in her new clothes. Tai looked very pretty in her new dress and shoes. We were both sitting on the sofa when Tessa walked out from the bedroom completely dressed. One look at her and I was overwhelmed with emotion. Never had I seen a more beautiful woman standing before me.

"I’m at a loss for words, baby. I’m stunned.", I said, softly.

"I love you too, baby.", Tessa said kissing me softly.

The event started at seven o’clock that night and we arrived about seven thirty or so. We parked in the car in the lot and walked in together. As soon as we entered the lobby everyone’s head was turning and watching Tessa. We had just gone through the double doors when one of Tessa’s staff saw her and squealed.

"Oh my god, Tessa……… what have you done, I love it.", she stated.

As we walked down the center aisle, I’m not sure who got noticed more either Tessa or Tai. Of course, Tai was well known at Methodist Memorial having been here for over four months of her life. We walked up to the front of the room where Bill and Beth’s table was situated. They had made arrangements for us to sit with them. I could see that both Bill and Beth were choked up when they saw Tessa’s transformation.

We sat down as several people came over and talked to Tessa and Tai. Of course, Tai was eating up the attention she was a people person. We were all sitting together when I noticed Jim and Jennifer Thomas, Lexie’s parents walked in. Right behind them were Lexie and Cody in two with Cody’s parents. They took a table in the second row to our right. Jim Thomas was a banking executive who dealt with the hospital’s finances. It took a few seconds before they recognized me and both Jim and Jennifer waved hello.

I got up and took Tai’s hand asking if she wanted to meet some of my friends. We walked over to the table where the six were sitting trying to act as normal as possible. Jim stood up and shook my hand and Jennifer kissed me warmly on the cheek. I greeted Cody and his parents but none of them cared much for me. Lexie got up and walked around the table and kissed me on the cheek. I looked back at Jim and Jennifer who had always treated me like a son.

"I would like to introduce you to Miss Tai Lynn Nguyen. Tai, these are very good friends of mine Mr. and Mrs. Thomas.", I said.

"It’s very nice to meet you.", Thai stated.

"It’s very nice to meet you too, Tai.", Jennifer responded.

"Chwis, may I go back and sit by Dr. T", Tai asked.

"Yes, you may.", I replied.

"Lexie told us that you are fostering her?", Jim stated.

"Yes sir, it’s a long story. She was in a terrible car accident that killed her parents and grandmother. She has no other family in this country. She had a severe concussion, broken wrist, two broken legs and fractured ribs. Dr. Williamson who I’m now seeing was her pediatric surgeon and treated her in ICU. Tessa introduced me to Tai and we both fell in love with her. Since she had no one, we stepped up and fostered her. We’re hoping to adopt one day.", I stated.

"Chris, that’s wonderful. I know the young lady will be in good hands.", Jim responded.

"Thank you sir, I just wanted to come over and say hello. Please enjoy the banquet.", I stated, walking away.

I walked back and sat down with everyone and I could see Bill Williamson looking at me. Bill was not one to beat around the bush.

"Chris, how do you know Jim Thomas and his wife?", he asked.

"They were almost my in-laws. I was engaged to their daughter Lexie Thomas.", I replied.

"Oh…... I was not aware of that.", he answered.

"I figured Tessa would have told you by now.’, I replied.

"No, she never mentioned it.", he stated.

"Look, after seeing Bill and Jennifer Thomas here with their daughter, I think it’s best for everyone to wait until Christmas day to propose to Tessa.", I whispered.

"You know, I think that might be a good idea. And after all, what a Christmas present for Tessa.", he smiled.

Just as I finished the Master of Ceremonies came up to the large podium and announced they were changing the format up a bit this year.

"We will start the presentation at eight thirty or so. Until then, please feel free to eat and drink. We will also have music so if you want to take the dance floor feel free to do so as well.", he stated.

Everyone got up and moved to either the bar or the buffet table. Tai tugged on my arm and told me she wanted something to eat and drink. We got up and walked over to the buffet table with Tessa following closely behind. Tessa kept receiving compliments as we moved across the floor. To be honest, I still was not used to her new look. We all three navigated the buffet line and made plates then walked back to our table. I went back to the bar and grabbed three soft drinks for the three of us. Tai was hungry and cleaned her plate asking to go back. I went back with her and she filled another plate with food. She had quite an appetite for a small girl who was about to turn four years old. The DJ started playing music and several people were dancing to the slower songs. It seemed the event was in full swing by eight o’clock. I noticed that Lexie and Cody got up to dance to one of the slower songs. It seemed to be two people on auto-pilot as they moved around the floor. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Lexie, in most ways she deserved better than Cody. Why she felt he was her only option was strange to me.

Several songs later, a Whitney Houston song started called "I Will Always Love You. Tessa left her seat quickly and grabbed my hand pulling me out to the dance floor. She wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me close.

"I hope you can dance.", Tessa giggled.

"Oh, I can dance sweetheart.", I replied.

I took one of her hands in mine and put the other around her waist. I started moving in the tradition waltz and Tessa followed me quickly. I could tell how surprised she was that I really could dance.

"Wow, you continue to surprise me.", Tessa giggled.

"I was my mom’s dance partner for years, she taught me.", I replied.

"I really wish that I could meet your mother. She did a hell of a job raising a remarkable son.", Tessa whispered, kissing me quickly. It took me a second, but I realized that we were the only two on the dance floor. The entire room was staring at us. We were about halfway through the song when I noticed Tai get up and walk towards us on the floor. She stopped in front of us on the floor and held her arms up.

"Chwis, I want to dance too.", she stated.

I reached down and picked her up and held her on my chest. She wrapped her tiny legs around me and put her arms around my neck. Tessa pressed against Tai’s back and grabbed my hand again. The three of us moved together on the floor with Tai’s head resting on my shoulder. When the song was over most of the auditorium stood and clapped although it was quite embarrassing.

Thankfully as soon as the song ended, the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium once again. He started by thanking all of the people present for once again making Methodist Memorial Hospital one of the best in the state.

First, they started naming outstanding department heads and giving them plaques or crystal awards. They named outstanding nurse’s and doctor’s as well. One by one the recipients came to the stage and accepted their award and gave a brief thank you speech. Finally, the last award to be given was for the most outstanding staff member of the year. This was voted on by the employees of the hospital themselves. So, it was a very much coveted award. It had gone to doctors, nurses, janitorial and food service workers during the year. As he lifted the large crystal vase over his head to show everyone there was a large applause. He then leaned into the microphone and announced the winner.

"The vote this year was overwhelmingly tilted to just one candidate. In fact, never before has the voting been so lopsided. Our winner this year is Doctor Tessa Williamson.", as the crowd broke out into a thundering applause.

"Doctor Williamson would you please remain seated for a few moments. I have someone here who wants to say a few words.", he asked.

Tessa sat back down somewhat confused but looked at me and shrugged. Bill and Beth Williamson both stood up. Beth reached down and picked up Tai and went to the rear on the stage and up the steps. Bill Williamson walked up the front stairs to the stage and over to the podium. He leaned over into the microphone slowly.

"As an administrator here, I cannot thank you enough for what you do here. This is a tough and emotional work environment, and you guys never cease to amaze me. You make my job so much easier. But more so this year has been quite a whirlwind for me and my family.", he started.

"Unless you just started here, everyone is familiar with Tai Lynn Nguyen’s story. She is backstage with my wife as we speak. She was airlifted here one night, the victim of a horrific car accident. That same accident took the lives of her father, mother, and grandmother. Tai was operated on immediately and for several weeks lay in ICU in critical condition. But then, one day at a time she started to improve. She had a concussion, fractured ribs, broken wrist and two broken legs in several places. We all know she was in pain, but she did what Tai does best. She emotionally touched everyone that encountered her.", he continued.

"But she touched one person in particular and that was my daughter, Doctor Tessa Williamson or Doctor T as Tai calls her. Tessa fell in love with this little human being whose life she helped save. With Tai’s future looking bleak Tessa decided to step up and decided to foster this child. Then she talked Chris Williams into joining her on this journey.", he stated.

"Now let’s stop here for a minute and put yourself in my shoes. My daughter and Chris appeared in my home and informed me that they were going to foster this child. Now for those of you who are not familiar with Chris Williams, he is the mountain that is sitting next to my daughter.", he stated, causing everyone to roar in laughter.

"Now put yourself in my place. You all know my daughter and I knew a little about Chris Williams. The only thing that really matters was Chris was the MMA Light Heavy Weight Champion of the world at one time. So, am I going to tell him no. I don’t think so.", Bill laughed, bringing the room with him.

"So, Tessa, please come up here and receive your award from a man that couldn’t be prouder of his child.", he asked.

Tessa got up and walked toward the stage towards her father to a thunderous ovation. I took the opportunity to put my plan into effect and walked to the back of the stage where Beth was with Tai. I scooped up Tai and walked up to the curtain behind the podium. I looked at Tai and reminded her of what to do. Somehow, she had kept the secret for a few days. I knew she was ready. I heard Tess thank all the employees for voting her this special award. She thanked her father and her staff on the fourth floor. It was time. I set Tai down and asked her to go see Bill. Tai parted the curtains and walked toward the podium. The applause was deafening for the small child.

Bill picked her up and held her close to the microphone. Tessa was surprised and confused at the same time. Bill whispered into Tai’s ear and she nodded to him.

"I want to thank all my doctors and nurses who helped me when I was here. You took good care of me. Especially Doctor T.", she started.

"Then Doctor T let me move in with her because everyone in my family went to heaven.", she continued causing the wind to go out of the crowd.

Everyone walked off the stage and came back to our table. Several people walked over and told Tai want a wonderful job she did on stage. I was a little disappointed not to be able to ask Tessa to marry me but doing it in front of Lexie and her parents just did not seem right. Since tomorrow was Christmas Eve, it would only be two more days before I popped the question anyway.

Tessa had to work on Christmas Eve, but I closed the gym both Christmas Eve and Christmas to let the employees spend time with their families. They had been doing a great job and allowing me to spend more time with Tai and Tessa. Tai and I ran around on Christmas Eve and picked up a few last gifts for Tessa and had a great lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant which Tai enjoyed.

It was around four thirty or so and Tai wanted to stop by the hospital and surprise Tessa for a few minutes. We went in and got on the elevator and went up to the pediatric floor. We got off the elevator and the nurse’s station was empty, which seemed strange but I figured they were short staffed for the holidays. Tai suggested we try Tessa’s office, so she grabbed my hand and we headed to the end of the hall. As we got closer to the door Tai broke away and ran to the door pushing it open quickly. I stopped dead in my tracks as did Tai. Tessa was locked in an embrace kissing a man in a white lab coat. I instantly became sick to my stomach. They quickly separated and Tessa held her hand over her mouth when she saw Tai. She then looked up and saw me standing a few feet behind Tai and panicked.

I was not sure what to do but I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to hurt the guy in the lab coat, so I started walking towards the door. Tessa quickly walked around the desk with tears streaming down her face. I had been betrayed before, but Tessa had known that. For her to do the exact same thing two days before I was going to propose to her was the ultimate deception.

"Who is this guy?", I stated pointing at the man.

"Chris, please let me explain.", Tessa replied.

"There’s not much to explain Tessa…… it speaks for itself.", I answered.

"Come on Tai, we’re going home.", I said, grabbing her hand.

"Wait Chris, please let me talk to you.", Tessa pleaded.

I continued walking to the elevator and pushed the button. I told Tessa I simply could not talk about this now especially with Tai here. Tai and I got in the elevator and went down and out through the lobby. I could tell that even at almost four years of age Tai knew this was wrong. I put her in her car seat and buckled her up. We left the parking lot and started on the way home.

"Chwis, why was Doctor T kissing that man?’, she asked.

"I don’t know Tai. You will have to ask Doctor T.", I replied.

"Why was his hand on her butt Chwis. I thought she liked you.", Tai said, a bit shaky.

"I thought she liked me too Tai. Maybe she likes him more, I don’t know.", I answered.

On the ride home I decided not to put Tai through a possible argument or fight at home. I decided to drive over and see if Bill and Beth could watch Tai for a few hours. We pulled up in their driveway and thankfully both cars were there. We walked up to the door and rang the bell. Beth answered the door quickly but one look in my face and she knew something was wrong. I followed Beth down the hall and into the family room where Bill was watching television.

"Chris, is everything ok?", Beth asked.

"Yes ma’am, I just wanted to ask if Tai could stay here for a few hours?", I asked.

"Of course she can.", Beth answered.

"Great, one of us will pick her up later.", I promised.

I was not going to say anything at this point because I really had no idea what to even think at this point. And second, these were Tessa’s parents so it was best to keep quiet until I could understand this situation. Unfortunately, that was not the way it was going to happen.

"Nana, why was Doctor T kissing that man at the hospital…… his hand was on her butt. I thought she liked Chwis.", Tai asked, tugging on Beth’s arm.

"Wait…… what happened?", Beth shouted.

"Doctor T was kissing a man at the hospital.", Tai once again stated.

By now Bill had gotten up and walked next to his wife with a very concerned look on his face. Beth eyes were beginning to water up like she was going to cry.

"Chris, what is going on?", Beth pleaded.

"I really have no idea. We happened to stop by to surprise Tessa and Tai went through the door to her office and well…………", I stated.

"Oh my god.", Beth sighed starting to cry.

"Do you know who it was son?", Bill asked.

"No sir, I don’t. Tai and I just left. That’s all I know.", I answered.

I promised once again that one of us would be back for Tai in a few hours then left. By the time I got back in my car I was a wreck. Once again, my life was falling apart. I thought about going around the corner to my house but right now I did not want to see Tessa. I decided to go to my first home to be alone and think about what had just happened. I drove over and went to the back of the house and opened the garage door and pulled my car in. I closed the door so Tessa wouldn’t know if I was there or not. I went inside but kept the lights off. I laid down on the sofa with everything and anything running through my mind. About ten minutes later my phone rang and I saw it was Tessa. I set it back down again. I was not in the right frame of mind to talk. Seconds later a text message came through.

Tessa Williamson: "Chris, please answer me. We need to talk."

Chris Williams: "Tessa, I just need to think for a while. Tai is at your mother’s house and I promised someone would pick her up in a few hours. That has to be you. Just so you know I did not say a word about what happened, but Tai blurted it out. I want you to be prepared. Give me a little time and we will talk. Agreed?"

Tessa Williamson: "I don’t have much of a choice do I ? I agree but please call me soon."

"Chris Williams: "I will."

The one thing I could not get out of my head was the fact that I had no idea exactly what was going on. Was this a recent attempt at an affair or was it something that had been going on before I was in the picture. In my mind, I think a long going affair would be better. If after buying a house and agreeing to foster Tai starting an affair now would be the ultimate betrayal. Being involved with someone before she met me seemed a little more plausible. I am not sure of when I actually drifted off to sleep but I know it was early in the morning. I woke up at looked at the clock and it was almost eight o’clock in the morning. This was Christmas Day, but it was not going to be anything like I had planned. One thing I knew for sure, I could not let this affect Tai’s Christmas. I took a shower and put on some jeans and a t-shirt that I still had laying around. I texted Tessa and told her I was on my way over.

I pulled up in the driveway and opened the front door and went inside. Tai had just gotten up and was coming down the hallway. I looked at Tessa whose eyes were red and swollen. I was guessing she had been up most of the night as I had. We simply exchanged greetings and then sat down with Tai so she could open her presents. She was excited as she ripped through the colorful paper squealing at each gift. We had purchased her an IPAD so we could get some programs for her schooling that would begin next year.

Never have I been in a more emotional or awkward situation than I found myself that Christmas morning. After a while, Tai asked if she could take her new dolls to her room and play with them in her dollhouse. Tessa agreed and Tai scooped up the dolls and ran down the hallway. I went into the kitchen to get a cup of coffee and Tessa followed me.

"I guess I owe you an explanation.", Tessa said softly.

"Tessa, you don’t owe me anything other than honesty. I told you going into this how I felt and another trainwreck just happened. I told you then and I will tell you now……... it must be me. No matter how hard I try, I just can’t get it right.", I answered.

"It’s not you Chris, you’re amazing. Please don’t sell yourself short.", Tessa argued.

"I’m so amazing that I drive every woman to another man……… yep, that’s pretty amazing.", I laughed.

"Chris, let me try to explain this. Jason and I have been seeing each other for two years on and off. I dated him before I met you and I thought for a time that he might be the one. Then you came along and really confused me. About a week ago he began coming on to me again and last night in my office he grabbed me and kissed me……... that’s what you saw.", Tessa stated.

"What I saw was you kissing him back and his hand on your ass. Do you remember that?", I responded.

"Yes, I remember that.", she sighed, lowering her eyes to her lap.

"Do you even know what you really want?", I asked.

"I don’t know Chris……… sometimes I think that maybe having Tai full time is not what you signed up for.", she explained, tears falling down her cheeks.

"Tessa, you’re better than this. Don’t blame Tai for what you did last night or ever. I looked you in the eyes and told you I was all in. I bought this house and spent close to a million dollars on our future. At what point did you think I was not serious.", I responded.

"I don’t know…… I really don’t.", Tessa sobbed.

"Can I ask you a question that you will answer honestly?", I stated.

"Yes, I won’t lie to you.", Tessa replied.

"Since we have been seeing each other……. Have you slept with him?", I asked, looking her directly in the eyes.

"Two or three times……", she answered, crying again.

"My god, Tessa. How do we go on…… What can I say to Tai. Do I just walk away? Why not tell me the fucking truth?", I asked, somewhat angry.

"I’m sorry Chris…….", she sobbed.

"Right now Tessa, sorry don’t cut it.’, I replied, walking out of the kitchen.
