i dont think ppl realize just how deep my love for the ring franchise and sadako goes. like its not just โ€œoh spooky ghost girl in a wellโ€ its not just another horror movie to watch when youre bored its basically mythology for me. i usually dislike supernatural elements in horror but onryos get a pass bc they arent just scary theyre tragic, theyre lonely, theyre beautifully cursed, they always have a beautiful story. sadako is the literal blueprint for women in horror nowadays, wether it be onryos or women in white or weeping women, she set a new look for "scary" and shes not just a monster or a random ghost like in other horror movies she has such an beautifully tragic story. like sadako isnt just a character, shes a symbol. shes grief, shes rage, shes sorrow, shes every horrible thing bottled up and made into this haunting presence. the fact that shes been reinterpreted so many times but still always feels like sadako? like even when you change her entire story and rename her "samara morgan" she still manages to have that same iconic effect. you see the long black hair over the face and instantly its โ€œthats sadakoโ€ even if it isnt her. she literally redefined horror i cannot stress this enough. you would never see anyone mention kayako without sadako, everything else is just a copy, the entire genre is inspired by her. and the atmosphere of ring is so unmatched like the static, the tape, the inevitability. it doesnt rely on cheap scares it relies on the fact that you KNOW its coming and theres nothing you can do. onryos are unstoppable, they just keep crawling toward you no matter what. its slow and quiet but so suffocating, and it sticks with you long after the movie ends. i think thats why it feels like mythology to me, bc its like a modern folktale, something that lives beyond just the movie itself. even in anime like "kimi ni todoke" sadako is mentioned shes not a horror movie monster anymore shes literal mythology she became an urban legend and no horror movie has EVER managed to do that or have an even close cultural affect. rant #over im the biggest sadako fan
