Bio
Some children crumble under the weight of their family's expectations; others thrive. Still others rot from within as they project an image of perfection. Sumi falls into this last category. Being the daughter of an accomplished architect and a popular actress has put both internal and external expectations on her to follow in their footsteps in some form from a young age. She did quickly show an affinity for both art and music, but this was more of a curse than a blessing. These outlets for creativity became a cage, and the only path to freedom was perfection. The 'spark' in her wasn't snuffed out, but it became a roaring inferno of obsession with perfecting her art and the belief that one must suffer for it. It's really made her quite temperamental, but people tend to forgive that when you possess a particular genius.
This belief is made manifest in the Bohemian Club, a club for the virtuosos of Higan who are restricted by silly things like rules and safety concerns. That isn't what she told the staff when forming it, but its exclusive nature and air of mystery of what exactly goes on in their private meetings has caused all sorts of rumors about how they create their masterpieces. What is known is that its members often gush about being chosen as Sumi's subject, but even the way they speak of that seems off. The truth is that it's nothing short of a sadomasochist nightmare, which Sumi puppeteers to find inspiration, and which her apprentices thank her for. No one experiences this more than her personal 'subjects', whom she pokes and prods until they reach their breaking point.
Her darker impulses and temper aside, she makes for pleasant company. Flamboyance that draws people in, a carefree attitude that makes her easy to get along with, and an unplaceable special 'something' that seems to make everything she does more interesting all combine with her talents to make a formidable school idol. She naturally enjoys herself and her work being the center of attention, but her belief in her own superiority is such that it doesn't bother her when focus momentarily shifts. In fact, she's more than happy to discuss the creative endeavors of others and even offer them tips on how to improve — as long as they can take her scathing criticism. While part of her does enjoy making others squirm, Sumi doesn't say anything she doesn't mean; every hurtful word is something that must be heard if they want to improve. After all, her tutors spared her no words, and her parents placed any under-par drawings in the trash rather than on the fridge. That said, she does occasionally feel tempted to source subjects from outside the Bohemian Club. However, she doesn't shy away from praising others either if they impress her. In fact, Sumi is something of a flirt. Since she considers her own body to be a magnificent Work of Art, she greatly enjoys the attention it garners while also not hesitating to appreciate the beauty of others. Even so, no confessions she's ever received have caused a romance to bloom.
Beyond the halls of Higan, Sumi's time is spent attending to her career as an idol, rigorously refining her craft, and being chaperoned around by her parents to be shown like some kind of trophy. Even now that many acknowledge her abilities, they carefully manage her schedule to ensure she stays on the right course. Her parents do genuinely take pride in her accomplishments beyond their part in the family's reputation, but it's rarely shown. Both are still very active in their respective careers and have little time to spare for personal time with their daughter, which might present them with an opportunity to better display their affection. In that sense, their strict observation and management of Sumi's life could be viewed as one of the few ways they have to involve themselves with their daughter.
Home
While Sumi family does have a residence in the city, it isn't their home. That simply wouldn't be practical. As her father is an architect and would never settle for the heart of his family being restricted by silly things like regulations, their luxurious estate outside of Kageoka is seemingly always being expanded upon, growing alongside their wealth and status. It's really become something of an avant-garde compound over the years. A change that only their servants and Sumi's tutors have had the chance to notice is the gradual replacement of pieces of decor with Sumi's art and the impact she has had on the overall vibe of the household. This isn't just the pride of her parents or her own ego at work, but a conscious effort on her part to provide the space with the warmth she was denied.
She has had some input on the expansions, but her personal area takes this even further as she treats it as a canvas in the most literal sense. There isn't a wall that doesn't have a fresco, a corner without a sculpture, or even a light lacking a colored bulb. Similarly, silence is scarcely tolerated and is drowned out by a relaxing ambiance crafted through a combination of water features. The word "drab" shouldn't even pop into a guest's head while here. She does have a proper studio for both art and music to take on more intense projects, but her domain's status as an in-progress work means that she'll often start working on it as inspiration comes to her. Naturally, this means that the various tools, materials, and instruments used to act on her creative urges also occupy it. Despite what it may seem, the room is actually painstakingly well-organized, and Sumi makes certain that each part comes together to form a beautiful whole.
To accommodate her 'process', Sumi's current room is rather removed from the rest of the abode, and servants have been directed not to disturb her with a few exceptions. Still, she keeps the door locked and handles all cleaning herself.
Combat
Sumi has little personal fighting ability worth mentioning, but her tall build and surprising strength have served her well in matters requiring force. As with most awakened, she relies greatly on her Idolon for anything serious. The Virtuoso is a fairylike creature that encompasses Sumi in all she is, a chaotic bundle of boundless creative energy. She fills the drab world with color and sounds, warping it into something more lively and more deadly. Her magnum opus, The Painted World, turns the world into her canvas, allowing her to make even more dramatic alterations, coloring everything in her own hues. The Virtuoso is much like her real-world counterpart, but unrestrained by expectations. She does as she wants, when she wants, with no compromise. Every moment is part of a grand performance that she lives to push to its zenith.
