kanata shinkai fun facts
(using he/him on the list for simplicity's sake + i'll find sources later i'm lazy rn)

madara and souma help cut his hair
happyele allegedly planned to kill him off in submarine
his mother passed away and he says she’s become “one with the sea,” so being in the sea is like being in her embrace (meteor impact & altered)
that being said, other stories mention his mother being alive, alongside with kanata's plans to visit her (stella maris, aquarium, abyss)
he’s surprisingly strong and can carry fishtanks (colorful autumn). he's also carried rinne and niki before. it's very possible he could even beat kuro in an arm wrestling competition (as stated by kuro himself)
despite constantly being surrounded by water, kanata doesn't know how to swim
he’s tried drowning sora, shinobu, mitsuru, and hinata (he didn’t know drowning meant death though LOL)
kanata only writes in hiragana. his speech is also reflected in hiragana due to how slowly he talks. the only word he doesn't write in hiragana is "hero"

jellyfish with long legs live in the deep sea, but jellyfish with short legs live closer to the surface. when kanata cuts his hair, he's now a shorter-legged jellyfish, accepting that he's meant to live on the shore instead of in the sea. (not a fact, per se, but i thought it was cool)

kanata shinkai is a member of ryuseitai (under the hero name ryuseiblue), as well as a member of the unofficial unit "five eccentrics." he has a deep, deep love for the ocean that stems from his upbringing, in which his town maintained a religion surrounding his family as gods. when his mother passed away, kanata believed she returned to the sea, and thus enjoys being in the water, as it feels like returning to her "warm embrace." he also has rather peculiar speech patterns: he speaks solely in hiragana, and is unaware of many words due to his sheltered childhood.

as a child, kanata was taught that he was a living god. he was constantly worshipped by the masses and granted wishes to his supporters. he transfers to yumenosaki and is marked as one of the "five eccentrics" by eichi and tsumugi: whereas the eccentrics were taught to believe that they were leaders of this school, they were simply made to be an example of what happens when you cross the student council. kanata, similar to the other eccentrics, was shunned and ended up losing plenty of his reputation.

meteor impact is the story in which kanata shinkai meets chiaki morisawa, and marks a big point in his development. the storyline, essentially, surrounds chiaki trying to explain to kanata that he is, in fact, human, and ought to live his life as such. it's... a very dark story, to say the least, and kanata suffers terribly, but ultimately realizes that the sea isn't where he belongs. he needs to live his life as a human, just as everyone else, and joins ryuseitai alongside chiaki.

more people need to talk about kanata shinkai and the way he’s learning to love it all despite being conditioned his entire life that he doesn’t belong here! we need to discuss how he was always taught that he was more than human, less than human, /inhuman/ but even despite that he realizes the land is where he ought to be. it’s where he’s meant to be, even if everyone has told him that he’s made for the sea. we need to have more conversations about how kanata thinks of the sea as his mother, sees being in the water as his dead mother’s embrace, but even so leaves the sea to explore new things on land. he leaves his past, his godhood and his trauma and overcomes it because even if he has the sea and his followers he’s still “lonely.” and of course it’s not easy to overcome that! kanata cries and tries to drown himself because he can’t fathom a life outside of the sea. but this stupid heroic guy who’s never believed in kanata’s godhood in the first place finds him! chiaki begs him to live, says it’s his only wish, promises to become kanata’s hero. they can walk side by side together as humans but kanata has to live!!!!! let’s elaborate on how he finally sees himself as human and not a god! the final wish kanata grants is not only for chiaki, but also for him! because people don’t love him for being a “god” anymore, they love him for being kanata! he’s so loved! he’s learning to abandon the expectations that have been placed on him and that he’s just as weak as everyone else and that is OK!

i love kanata shinkai so much. he's so pretty and i love how she floats in fountains it's so stupidly endearing and i think she's just the cutest thing on earth like genuinely. i like the way her hair swoops in these cute little swirls and how he has an ahoge it's so cute he's the love of my life... i know he's been thru a lot which makes me really sad but despite all that he's constantly trying to help others (eg members of ryuseitai) and displays kindness like how she was the first person to call shu kind. he also has these supe rsilly habits like how he says "puka puka" instead of snoring or how she canonically says rawr it's adorable... i would love to go on an aquarium date with him but i dont know because he owns an aquarium so like would it rly be a good date plan? thats my thought of the day. anyways i love kanata so much and she means so much to me i wish more ppl loved kanata but were willing to share that love LOL :( kanata my beautiful husbandwife. fuck happyele though lmao
