Spirit Conscript CYOA Entry:

Uriel, the Lost Guardian

Character Fluff

It is far from unheard of for an angel to fall, but... what happens when an angel gets lost? Uriel remembers little of how he got to Spirit World, only a vague sense of immense distance, of spiritual torment, and of a skeletal hand peeling away the fabric of reality to fish Uriel out of whatever cosmic sinkhole he'd become entrapped within. Angels are supposed to be ageless, but having been cast aside into the vastness of Limbo, his new home... he feels very, very young. And alone. And afraid.

The voice of God no longer speaks to Uriel, if indeed it ever did. His mind is full of chaos, memories of standing guard over Eden intermingled with a life as a mundane human boy, and memories yet stranger and darker still of one for whom there is no doubt whatsoever in his origins. The demon calls itself Azariah, almost certainly not its true name, and it is overlaid somehow within Uriel's body and mind. The name means "Yahweh has helped" and is a Hebrew derivative of Abednego, one of the three men cast into the fiery furnace and saved by God. Presumably this name is chosen in some sort of clever mockery, but Uriel can't help but wonder at its possible relationship to his own supposed purpose and abilities.

There is so much anger boiling within Uriel, which he prays is the fault of his "passenger" and not truly a reflection of himself. Many sleepless nights wrestling with this fear have left Uriel in no doubt however, that in his heart he believes this to all be his own fault somehow. It's given him tremendous power though, and a single light yet shines in his shadow. It is his weapon, one he knows as intimately as his own heart and hands, a terrible flaming sword capable of scourging any supernatural or demonic foe. It is the blade which drove Adam and Eve from Eden, or at least a suspiciously accurate replica of that sword. Nothing supernatural can withstand its white-hot touch, and wounds from the blade heal terribly slowly if at all, a lingering mark of God's wrath.

In Uriel's hands, the sword has few if any equals, and it seems to leap to his aid when called upon. He can enhance its potential yet further, and even grow both the blade and himself to a gigantic size, temporarily re-awakening the true archangel's form Uriel remembers in his dreams. Whatever human memories (or perhaps even a human himself, Uriel cannot say) has become a part of himself, that person was a skilled exorcist in many ways. Though likely not the equal of a true Spirit World shaman or enchanter, through this unknown human Uriel has inherited deep knowledge of ritual and ceremony, along with a couple useful anti-Spirit tools. If nothing else, these memories greatly helped the angel understand his new surroundings, having had no other knowledge of eastern cosmology.

Women (and some men) seem to pay rather too much attention to Uriel as he goes about the business of slaughter, which the formerly sexless angel cannot pretend to truly understand. In this world he is as equipped as any other man, but lacks the sense of shame a native human would. And though crafted as beautifully and elegantly as one would expect of an angel (or a demon), Uriel seems almost ignorant of his own appearance. His innocence stands out in sharp contrast to the furious fervor with which he prowls Limbo, always seeking Chimeras and powerful spirits to hew asunder.

Uriel cannot silence Azariah, but he has struck a deal... of sorts. Though the thought of dealing with a devil makes Uriel want to slit his own throat, the fear of letting Azariah take full control is greater than his disgust. Accordingly, Uriel permits Azariah to be as sadistic and hateful as he pleases, so long as only monsters will be slain. The fact that Uriel himself now feels repulsed and in pain when certain holy symbols or wards are near... is just one more terror among many. The angel fears that he is fallen indeed, and in truth cannot tell where his moral compass is now centered. And yet, he struggles on.

Limbo is a vast and empty land, where friends and enemies alike are few. An angel wielding the sword of God does not go unnoticed for long though, and Uriel has found a small handful of allies and enemies in equal number. They have taught him much in their own ways, though none have been able to ease the terrible sense of disorientation at Uriel's core. Each day he prays, and each day he slays, and longs for a new dawn to bring the clarity Uriel so desperately craves. The agony Uriel feels after pushing himself to his limits helps, at least a little bit. And each completed job is one more step forward.
