  • OR ATLA for short, is a Nickelodeon original series released on February 21, 2005. The series ended officialy on July 19, 2008 with 3 seasons, but had consistent reruns on Nickelodeon's sister channel, Nicktoons, between March 2006 and March 2024. After not returning to the main network since 2008, ATLA returned for reruns in August of 2020 due to the show's resurgence of popularity on Netflix where it was released in May of that same year.

〖ུ۪۪⠀ 𓏸ྀ ⊹ The Characters 𓈒𓈒𓈒 𓏲 ๋࣭ ࿐

  • THE main characters of the series, affectionately referred to by fans as "The Gaang" consists of: Aang, Katara, Sokka, Appa, Momo, Suki, Toph, and Zuko.
  • AANG is the Avatar. The Avatar is a human with the ability to bend all four elements: water, earth, fire, and air. It's the Avatar's duty to master the four elements and use that power to maintain balance and peace among the four nations of the world, as well as between mankind and spirits¹ He was born to the Air Nomads and lived his life as an airbender until he learned he was the Avatar. The Air Nomads were monastic people who practiced airbending and pacifism under a theocratic society.² They were peaceful people who lived in temples and traveled the world on flying bison.³ Aang specifically being from the Southern Air Temple.
    • His personality is largely influenced by this; he's an adventurous and bubbly young boy. His reverence for life and the world led him to be a vegetarian. While he wished he wasn't the Avatar, he grew into his duties and executed them wonderfully and uniquely.
    • It is important to note that Aang, while he is the Avatar that surpassed Roku, was trapped in ice for 100 years.
      • When Aang had first found out he was the Avatar, he was surprised and almost immediately was isolated from his peers; Aang created an airbending move, the air scooter and just a little after he was announced as the next avatar, his peers used the air scooter in a game they created. When he asked if he could join, they declined saying that since he's the Avatar, he has an unfair advantage. Because of this, he became closer with monk Gyatso, someone who was very much like a father figure to Aang and his friend in a past life. Gyatso was also the man who was to train him in his Avatar duties, however the Council of Elders of the temple noticed that Gyatso was very lax in his training and treatment with Aang. They decided that Gyatso was not a good fit to teach him and concluded that Aang should be sent to the Eastern Air Temple. Unbeknownst to them, Aang had overheard the entire conversation and ran away on his own flying bison, Appa. Things didn't go smoothly as they were trapped in a terrible storm with nothing but the ocean beneath them. When he and Appa crashed into the waves, his Avatar State activated as a defense mechanism and he sealed himself in a giant block of ice for the next 100 years.
    • Aang learned that his people were slaughtered by the Fire Nation in the 100 years that he was sealed away. This made him come to his senses and realize that there was an imbalance in the world that he needed to restore.
  • KATARA is a waterbender and, along with her brother, freed the Avatar from the ice. She and Sokka find him in the ice after a fishing mishap and Katara is the first to rush to his aid. She grew up in the South Pole, one of two water tribes in the world, and is the only waterbender left after all the Fire Nation raids on her village.

  • AANG my son where do I start with him? He gets blamed consistently throughout the series for "running away" or "leaving the world behind" or whatever nonsense they try to pin on him all the time. It's so unfair to him because when he ran away, he didn't do it to "abandon the world" he did it because he was scared. He didn't want to be separated from Gyatso, the only person who treated him normally after learning that he's the Avatar. He wished his responsibilities away because he wanted to be accepted and appreciated by his peers again. His prowess in airbending was reduced to "well he's the Avatar" constantly with no consideration of the fact that Aang trained very hard and became a master airbender at just 12 years old. He'll always be loved by me and while I don't think he's infallible I do think he gets wrongfully blamed for abandoning the world or allowing the war to continue because at the end of the day, the 100 year war the world experienced is just a consequence of Roku's incompetence.
    • I also love how Aang interacts with the world. His people were slaughtered by the Fire Nation yet he still holds onto the notion that everyone has good in them and that just because someone is Fire Nation that doesn't make them inherently bad. He recognizes that the Fire Nation needs to change not be eradicated because there are citizens of the Fire Nation that are also suffering because of the actions of the Firelord.
  • KATARA my daughter how I love her so much and how overhated she is. She's a powerful, determined, and hopeful young girl who despite everything finds a way out, a solution, a way to survive. If it wasn't for her, the Gaang would've died before they even reached Ba Sing Se. People use very strong language when describing their hatred for her, but I wish they considered the fact that she is a 14 year old girl who lost her mother in a Fire Nation attack at a very young age. People love to point out how she told Sokka in season 3 that he "didn't love mom the way [she] did" but no one pays attention to the nuance. Katara harbors a deep hatred for the Fire Nation for murdering her mother, and at this point Zuko has joined their group. She trusted Zuko back in Ba Sing Se despite him being Fire Nation but he betrayed that trust. That only further solidified her hatred of the Fire Nation and it doesn't help how everyone readily accepted Zuko into the group while she was still grappling with all of these emotions. As a viewer, it's easy to forget what kind of person Zuko is to Katara. We get shown all of these wonderful moments of him finally coming to his senses and reckoning with the fact that his father and the Fire Nation as a whole in fact were wrong and it was his duty— his destiny to help the Avatar to restore balance to the world. He put a lot of effort into changing and it took a lot of time and strength for him to do so, however, Katara knows none of that. She wasn't there when he stood up to his father, she wasn't there when he spent hours learning about his family lineage, and she wasn't by his side to watch him grow and change. She was given an isolated image of a Zuko who wants to capture the Avatar and likely kill her and the rest of the Gaang, and then along comes nice Zuko who suddenly wants to help the Avatar restore balance to the world. It's hard to believe all on it's own, but once you take into consideration his betrayal of Iroh in Ba Sing Se it's absurd. She had her guard up around him because she didn't want to be betrayed again. All these things in her mind, Zuko joining the group, the war raging on, her mothers death, made her lash out. Was she right for what she said? Of course not but it's very easy to understand what made her say that. She's hurt and afraid but feels like she needs to be a strong girl because her mother isn't around anymore. As a young girl, she was given responsibilities way bigger than herself which wasn't helped by the fact that her dad, Hakoda, left the tribe soon after her mother died. All this is to say that Katara is deeply misunderstood, she's viewed sometimes as a "motherly" and overbearing person but in truth she just doesn't want to lose her family again.
