Geography, Geology, and Climate

Geological Map
Geography, Geology and Climate play a major role in a nation's economy and to properly understand the economy, understanding the geography and climate is important. Greater details for both can be found here, but to summarize by region:

  • The North of the Dual Monarchy has an Orogenic formation that is part of the Greater Iridisian Orogenic Range. Here, copper, gold, silver, lead, iron, zinc and tin can be found in great quantities as well as basalt, pyroxene, olivine, amphibolite, greenschist, and hornfels rocks. Some Anthracite Coal can be found in Cumbraland, while bituminous coal can be found in Petranmaa.
  • The Center Shield is filled with greenstone belts, TTG rocks, and deposits of nickel, gold, silver, and copper.
  • The Western Platform has many Clastic Sedimentary rocks, Conglomerate Rock, & Breccia, with deposits of iron oxide, lead, zinc, quartz, alcite, hematite, quartz, clay, and uranium.
  • The Western Extended Crust is a foreland basin, while the Eastern Extended Crust is much like the shield. Both have gas and petroleum deposits in them.

Climate wise, Pingviinilä-Wælseaxɑksnɑ has Subarctic continental and Tundra climates. The land is dominated by boreal forests but is extremely poor for farming overall. The best areas for farming are in the Dfc areas, where the only real farming occurs.

Agriculture, Hunting, and Fishing

Agriculture is not a common profession in the Dual Monarchy (although in the border regions, it can be rather common.), and it is mostly subsistence where it is found (other than somewhat in the border regions.) By far the largest produced crop is barley, followed by oats, potato, wheat, and sugar beet in that order. Hemp, rapeseed, carrots, cucumber, rye, caraway and tomato are also grown in significant amounts.

Pastoralism is limited, but it should be noted that the herding of reindeer and yaks is found across the entire Dual Monarchy to some degree.

Hunting is an important part of the food industry, and society as a whole. It is not just limited to land-based animals like Reindeer, but to seals, and sealions also; whose pelts and meat help sustain many villages along the Southern Ocean. Fur is a particularly profitable material as well.

Fishing is also extremely important, with a large of the food for the whole Dual Monarchy that is not imported being fish caught in the Southern Ocean or in the many lakes. Whaling is another common trade, with many small villages doting the eastern coast being whaling settlements.

Mining

Mining is mostly concentrated in the north, whereas noted the orogenic belt provides ample resources. It is a particularly important part of the Wælseaxɑksnian economy because of the fine metallurgy that is the most desired part of their economy to the rest of the world. It also can be found to some degree in other areas but is far more limited because of the inaccessibility of the resources there.

Forestry

Forestry is an essential part of the economy, as the vast forests that make up most of the Dual Monarchy are the lifeblood of many inland settlements. The resilience of the trees found in these regions is rather notable and makes them desired beyond the Dual Monarchy because of how excellent they are for ships and durable wooden furniture.

Ice

Ice is limitless in the Dual Monarchy as a whole, and the Ice trade has always been an extremely profitable one, though dangerous. From the south, large blocks of ice are transported north to be either used for food conservation or sent abroad. It is notable that the ice found within the Dual Monarchy is rather special in that it tends to last a long time even under tropical heat.

Secondary Sector

The main areas of the secondary sector are the food processing industry, the metalworking industry, the timber industry, and the many artisans that use the rare resources found in the Kingdom for crafting. Most raw materials harvested within the Dual Monarchy are transformed into goods via the secondary sector to be sold to the rest of the world.

Trade and Infrastructure

Trade is extremely important for the Kingdoms, which makes most of its profit from the selling of goods to foreign markets, and also is required for the population of the Kingdom to survive.

Sea wise, the major trading power with the Kingdoms is the Tsukinode Empire, long a friend of the Dual Monarchy. Much of our food stockpile comes from our trade with them. Other powers such as the Fantasmas and Bedstviyites also are major trading friends, along with the nations of Goryeo in the west to a degree.

Land trade is extremely important considering that none of the ports are ice-free all year and thus there is only a window of a few months to trade via them. Fortunately, the road network of the dual monarchy is great thanks to the wise investments in it, and this has caused land trade to become an essential part of the economy. Land routes to Mujigae and beyond along the Cumbraland road, which is usable year round is a lifeline for Wælseaxɑksnɑ, while the Ruusu Road which goes through the lands of the Rosebutas along the south coast to the Tsukinode ports, and further along to Ethyria and beyond is also an important lifeline. In the winter, Valkoinen Ruusu road along the frozen Southern Ocean speeds up the land travel here.

Interiorly, the roads are equally important and while in the south, there are periods when they are isolated, most of the nation has year round land travel thanks to the chuubanite technologies which help keep the roads clear.
