What would a “network we control” look like.
The main thing to keep in mind is if you don’t own the platform, you don’t HAVE a platform.
Move off big centralized apps and services and run something yourself.
Something distributed would be preferable over something with a single point of failure.
“Mistrust Authority — Promote Decentralization” is a core tenet of the Hacker Ethic & it will serve you well in resistance.
Something distributed and decentralized will be censorship resistant.
End to End Encryption will be a necessary component to avoid surveillance.
VEILID is promising but not yet widely available.
SIGNAL is the de facto standard for private chat.
If your community is geographically local you can create community networks that don’t rely on the internet.
Mesh networks can be decentralized but something like WiMAX blanketing a neighborhood can work too.
All this being said there is no one size fits all solution it will be determined by your community’s needs, resources, and technical acumen.
Imagine old school, analog solutions such as dead drops and pen and paper cyphers and one time pads or pirate radio can be used.
Your own networks will be shaped by the environment your community finds itself in.
Maybe even redundant and overlapping techniques and technologies.
We don’t know what your community network will look like. All we know is the time to build it is NOW.
